The DSL teams are playing each other today in what was supposed to be a 7-inning game, but they're tied at 3 heading into the 9th and play is suspended due to rain. Juan Sierra hit his 5th home run for the Blue team. Juan Mieses allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out three over three scoreless. He's an 18-year-old righty from the Dominican in his first pro season. Miguel Flores has an RBI single for the Orange team, and Sandro Pereira is 1-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Jeremy Martinez allowed an unearned run on two hits, walked one, and struck out seven in four innings. Martinez is a 20-year-old RHP from Puerto Rico and in his second year in the DSL.
I had kind of quit paying attention to Cerny sometime last season, then about a week ago it occurred to me he was looking OK again. It may be too little too late but he is certainly back on my radar.
Jaworsky is one I’ve definitely been keeping my eye on. He’s got a sweet swing and looks like he’s got plenty of room to grow into his body as he develops and potentially turn some of those doubles(he hits a lot of them) into home runs. I don’t know much about his defensive ability at SS but he seems to be an intriguing prospect who has handled the adjustment to pro ball pretty damn well. Between Jaworsky and Ochoa those could turn out to be some very valuable picks based on where Brown was able to snag them in the draft.
Cristian Gonzalez hit his first homer of the season in an FCL game that originally started on July 2 but was completed today. Even with all his injury issues, there's still something, but he'll have to get out of West Palm Beach soon.
Of course, all DSL numbers should be taken with massive grains of salt, and he just turned 20 this past Sunday, so this might be another case of an overage pitcher dominating, but I think Anderson Brito has gotten my attention. Brito is a righty from Venezuela who signed towards the end of the last IFA signing period and he's up to 98 with his fastball now. Brito allowed a hit and struck out 12 in 4.2 innings in the DSL Blue team's 2-0 win over the Royals' Ventura team today. This game was called after the top of the 7th inning. Brito now has 40 strikeouts in 22.1 innings and opponents are hitting .091 against him. Jhon Diaz hit his first home run of the season and Amauri Ramirez went 2-3 and scored the Blue team's other run on a wild pitch.
Yeah Brito is clearly too advanced for the DSL. Whether he will be a good prospect or not who knows but he should be pitching in the US.
Just ridiculous. Brito looks to be the best "older" international pitcher the Astros have signed at this stage in their career. The track record of hard throwing teenagers is not great, though.
Ryan Gusto with another nice outing for Sugar Land: 6.1 IP, 4 H, unearned run, BB, 9 K Pedro Leon hit his 16th homer for the Space Cowboys, a 2-run blast.
