Is CJ calling protections at the line? I like that he’s up to the challenge but that may be too much for him at present if he is. Iirc only Payton called both protections AND plays at the line. I don’t even think Brady called protections, I may be wrong.
IDK, Rather than seeing it as a regression, maybe my expectation for him to repeat his rookie year and improve upon it was a bit too much. Even though I knew it was ridiculous to begin with, I still let some of that idea seep in. 2024 2023 2024 Houston Texans Advanced Quarterback Stats | NFL Metrics | FantasyPros Now for the team going limp in the 2nd half...grrr
CJ's stats are very similar to last year minus the explosive plays. However, anyone who watches the games knows it doesn't pass the eye test.
I don't think his stats are that similar if you look at the first 10 games of his rookie year vs this year. He has 5 less touchdowns and 1 more interception (17/5 vs 12/6), and less than half as many 300+ games (5 vs 2). Also, he's had more than twice as many games this season with 4 or more sacks. He's had 5 games this year with 4 or more sacks, and as many as 8 in one of his games. Last year at this time he was only sacked over 4 or more times twice, and those were his first two games as a rookie.
He also, essentially, committed almost all of his turnovers last year in just two games (both wins!). For the year, he turned the ball over 9 times (5 INTs; 4 FL) - but six (!) of them occurred in two games: weeks 9 (1 INT; 2 FLs) & 10 (3 INTs). *As a rookie*... Stroud turned the ball over just 3 times over 13 games. That was never going to be sustainable - 2023 was *such* an outlier. So, yes- he's not as good this year - but, also, last year, he was off-the-charts great. When your QB isn't once-in-a-generation great, some of the other parts he hid get exposed.
I heard boomer after the Jets game say Stroud led the league in "Ohh no, just throw it away throws" with 28. That was 2 weeks ago.
The first half of this quote is completely right - he was and is tremendous. The second half is concerning - their horrible OL and predictable play calling is getting the guy hurt, making him nervous and clearly setting him back. Being “very happy with how he is playing” shows a complete lack of urgency about the situation they have created. We can all see he isn’t playing at his best - own it and tell us how they will help him.
