Draft round of players currently in mlb.com’s Houston Top 30 prospects list: 1st: Gilbert, Lee, Whitley 2nd: Melton, Perez, Taylor 3rd: Knorr 4th: Barber (above slot bonus), Daniels 5th: Hamilton 6th: Arrighetti 7th: Loperfido 8th: Gordon 11th: Clifford (above slot bonus) 12th: Dezenzo 13th: Dubin 18th: Wagner
The back half of the first round looks pretty weak to me. But as I always feel, I think there’s a lot of value in the round 3-10 range with college players. Not that they should ever draft for need, but they need a balanced draft and should take at least one player at every position in the first 15 rounds.
Any last minute predictions for Houston’s 1st/2nd picks today? I am really not liking the prospects that appear to be slotted in range of Houston’s first pick. I’d be good with Yohandy Morales but I don’t think he’ll last to Houston’s pick. I am sort of hoping they cut an under slot deal with their first pick. One player I really like is Gino Groover. He can hit and I think he’ll be able to get passable at 2B, 1B, or LF.
In the first round I want a young, high ceiling pitcher. LHP Thomas White Prep RHP Charlee Soto Prep RHP Travis Sykora Prep In the second round I want a college pitcher that can contribute sooner or an up the middle bat. RHP Ty Floyd LSU RHP Tanner Witt Texas C/SS/CF Cole Carrigg SD State
I like Carrigg a lot. He is legit at all three of those positions. Probably the most versatile bat in this years draft.
lol. sounded a little goofy i know, but roots of the current scouting/development/analytics team probably don't go further back than Luhnow.
I expect the best college pitchers to be gone by the time we select but a few of the top prep guys could fall to us. That is how I justify my first round choices. High school guys scare me a little too.
What top-round HS pitchers have they missed on? When you hit you hit, when you miss you miss. Other than Whitley of course, who wasn't a "miss" more than a "don't draft future knuckleheads who get hurt"? ETA: **** the Dodgers and all, but their scouting dept has continually hit on picks at the back of the 1st round, it's annoying.
The others weren't first rounder, but there's: 2021: Alex Ulloa 4th round - didn't sign 2020: Alex Santos 2nd round - currently 8.87era in HiA 2018: Jayson Schroeder 2nd round - released 2016: Whitley 1st round - you know 2015: Patrick Sandoval 11th round - hit for the Angels 2014: Aiken 1st round, Jacob Nix 5th round, Mac Marshall 13th round - didn't sign 2013: Austin Nicely and Devonte German 10th and 11th rounds - released after A ball and Rookie ball respectively Now maybe Brown turns it around, but the Astros record of HS pitchers in the last decade is trash.
