My biggest complaint about our system the last several years is the lack of young guys among our top prospects. Because of the way FA works and ages players hit their prime, it isn't exactly a bad thing, but it is just so different from most clubs.

That looks very likely to change given how many good teenage/20/21 prospects there are in the complexes and this draft. Espinosa and Baez are on track to be in the top 10 prospects in the system by year end, and Ochoa will be there as well.

That's a great point. The talent emerging from the complexes has not made beyind A ball, or at least had success there, often the last couple of years.

That looks to be changing and will drastically lower the average age of the top prospects

I liked this draft a lot, for the youth and talent it added to our system, and especially for these players.

    Favorite five 2023 selections
1 SP Jake Bloss: High ceiling righty with a very good chance to reach or occasionally exceed his ceiling. Reminds me of Zack Greinke, he seems to be in it for the joy.
2 SS Chase Jaworsky: Potentially a replacement for Pena when the time comes. Can be an all star if he has the work ethic for it.
3 2nd base Brice Matthews: Taking a second baseman in the first round is always counter indicated but his back story and the importance of Altuve’s place in Astros history almost demanded this first pick.
4 CF Nehomar Ochoa: Dreaming of developing our own 2 way player. It would sure be fun to watch that process if our coaching staff is willing to give it a try.
5 SP Alonzo Tredwell Very high ceiling, very high risk selection due to his injury history. Drafting low puts the best players out of range unless you are willing to take the risks associated with this type of player. Hope triumphs over experience with this pick.

    Honorable Mention
CF Anthony Huezo: I didn’t think we could get him and Ochoa both signed, great preparation.
SP Kelly Austin: A lot of value for an undrafted player.
C Garret Guillemette & Will Bush: Both feel like they have a chance to develop into real prospects at catcher
