Wood needs to be traded in the off season. A top 3 player is needed from the draft. Chet is my choice right now. He's skinny, but he plays the right way.
I think a steady vet backup pointguard should be in play. I like the potential of Nix, but having him backup another young guard won't move the needle, even in terms of development. I would throw something like $7-$10m at Rubio. Plus he should help with Garuba's development, since he got some good stuff out of him in the Olympics. I would think a defensive big would be looked at too. Especially if we move Wood. One of the New York guys would be a good backup, i know Nerlens will still be under contract but I'm not sure Mitch Robinson comes off the bench. My hope is, we hit in the draft this year and somehow make a run TOWARDS the play in next year. And be real playoff locks the year after.
I like Woods game. That's not the problem. It's his age, attitude and his perception of his place in the league I'm not in love with on this team.
For me it's all about the defense .... If he'd play defense like a big man should, I wouldn't have any complaints and would probably be agreeable to giving him max money. But when he leaves guys like EG & Christopher on switches with bigs in the paint while he's the lone big on the floor, it pisses me off. You can't win like that.
Sengun - Draft Pick Wood - Martin Eric Gordon - Tate Green - Denis Porter - Josh C * John Wall is your wild card
Agreed. He just lacks the toughness I want in a big. Not sure if it's his frame or his mindset but you see it in his defense and his screening.
I'm pretty sure we will be over the cap. I guess there might be a MLE available, but you aren't going to be able to get a coveted player for that. I think they should probably try for the best veteran PG they can get.
I don’t see the need to sign a veteran pg unless we are seriously trying to compete for a real play-off spot. If we are going to compete then we might as well keep Gordon, Wood, and Schroeder for a reasonable contract and putting players and draft picks together for a useful vet. Not advocating this at all. Schroeder actually is a good fit for this team as a sixth man, but I doubt that is the real plan, just GM speak.
They won't be very far above the cap when the only contracts of significance are Wall, EG & Wood who account for $81,252,579 The next two largest contracts are Green @ $9.4m & Nwaba @ $5m The only other contract that will be greater than $3.5m is their top draft pick but we can't figure that until we know where they are picking. They'll probably be ~$5m-$8m over the cap but safely $30m under the tax line... So, it's not inconceivable that they spend the MLE which is either $10,264,000 or $4,017,000.
That changes if a star player emerges....everything changes if he realizes he is the complimentary guy. DD
Let's brainstorm some. If we did nothing at the trade deadline, eventually Christopher has to be moved up to the starting lineup as he is pretty clutch shooter. Either Green or KPJ (in this case Green) has to move to the bench. He fills the 6th man role to the T. A Playoff contender needs a 16 ppg scorer off the bench, that is textbook.
I like tough Villanova PGs. I'd try to snag Brunson, unless there's a better PG to be had in the draft?
I’m not sure that we should sign anyone this year. Keep as much space open as possible for 2023. I don’t think the free agent class is great, but if you can offer the ability for two max free agents to team up, that’s a pretty appealing opportunity.
I think Brunson will be too much, but if Tyus can be had for a reasonable contract I’d be good with signing him.
