Gerrit Cole was coming off a few underperforming seasons, so he came at a huge, huge discount. Soto will not.
That offer wouldn’t get close They are going to want at least 2-3 players with higher ceilings. Garcia and Urquidy are actually great pitchers for the team we have right now, but they ain’t potential top of the rotation aces who are just beginning their clocks
With Brantleys situation now up in the air and Yuli continuing to be meh (albeit not terrible anymore), going after a bat is no longer optional IMO. Even with Yordan coming back, the lineup without Brantley simply isn't good enough. Even with Brantley it's not as good as one would like, but it might have been good enough. If you have to overpay a little to get Bell, so be it.
This offer isn't even close. Soto has $176.8M trade value Your offer totals up to $106.5M If you added Pena it would still be $15M short ( Y.Diaz, Barber, and Cristian Gonzalez add ip to $15M) and Washington will be looking for an offer with excess value not equal value. This is why there is no point even discussing this. Soto is a unicorn. I have lived my whole life without one and am fine.
So you’re playing Alvarez in LF almost every game and letting Bell DH. If you just substitute Bell for Gurriel and Brantley doesn’t come back, have you really improved the line-up that much? Just asking. I wish Bell could at least play 1b and LF.
If Brantley does not come back then it will take 2 bats to "improve the lineup that much" Without Brantley any 1 bat will only marginally improve the team
In the playoffs, absolutely. Yordan everyday in LF wouldn't be the end of the world. Bell has played the outfield, he's probably pretty bad at it, but swapping him and Yordan doesn't really change anything offensively. There's no player, even if you add Soto, that can upgrade 2 offensive spots by himself. Bell is likely the most impactful offensive player available.
I’d do that. Washington in a Vacuum would be better off but my suspicion is they’d probably get more elsewhere.
What’s hysterical is around that time we were pumping out a ton of talent that went elsewhere. That same year we traded away a guy that became a borderline all star for a washed loogy. We had Rule V guys leave and come back to hurt us. But for JV just nothing of any value.
Not that I'm expecting huge things from them, but the books on Jake Rogers and Daz Cameron aren't completely written. Plenty of trades end up not costing much in hindsight, that's part of the deal when you trade prospects. Sometimes you give up Yordan Alvarez or Josh Hader, sometimes you give up a big heap of trash.
I appreciate your attempt to assign value but it's irrelevant. In your line of reasoning it would be impossible for stocks to trade at high pe ratios. If no one has a better offer then even if it's not fair value it could be the winning bid. You make assumptions that aren't true. 1) You assume a players value is constant 2) You assume all organizations value players the same 3) You assume there is a vacuum in negotiating a trade and not multiple bidders. Soto's desire to test the market could also mean offers from teams with a belief he may sign an extension and thus overpay will not happen. It could scare many teams away.
No team is going to trade for Soto for what he’s worth. All you can do is create best package and see if you win. Myers Brown Garcia Yainer Diaz… if you think Lee is catcher Future. That just might get it done.
I don't understand how you get that I assume any of that. I happen to agree you are clearly right about all 3 points.
Maybe but I’m not so sure or…nationals want Javier over Garcia. I think we are close if we want Soto on the team. Nothing beats young proven pitching in the majors.
And he isn’t a free agent so they don’t have to deal him They ain’t about to sell short becaue “that’s the best that was offered” If you think we have any real chance to get Soto you haven’t paid much attention to how we operate
