In all fairness to the Padres, if things don't go well this year and next, they could put Tatis and Soto on the market in 2024 and rebuild their farm in one offseason.
No, its in regards to whether we are winning the deadline..... we have done okay..... and they are still trying to make another big move for a centerfielder or first baseman or pitcher..... but it is like pulling teeth. I usually try not to be cryptic. If I can say it I will just say it.
it seemed pretty straightforward, it's coming close to the deadline, they aren't close to a TD type deal but they haven't made mistakes and should have a solid enough FG type lesser deal set up if all else fails. Maybe it's just obvious to me because that was always my assumption to begin with.
I LOVE the idea of being able to face Odorizzi in the playoffs. First off, it means we are in the World Series, but also IMO it would be a free win.
There isn't a GREAT option available in CF. Reynolds was the best but the Pirates pulled him off the table unless you want to severely over pay. Chas has been great vs. LH pitching in his 168 AB in the majors .903 OPS. That said find a guy that can start vs every right hander and play good defense. Mullins maybe you you can get him out of Baltimore but at his salary of peanuts the Astros have to overpay. Taylor is the guy I think maybe would fit and maybe KC makes a fair deal. He is GG, plus he has figured out RH pitching this year. He is on the books next year at 4.5 million. Maybe the Astros catch lighting in a bottle and Pedro Leon gets a call up and plays really good September and beyond.
Good farms do not turn a 66-win team into a likely 90+win team...especially one that made a few bad trades and not getting good value in free agency. No one ever projects a team to be winning 100+ games due to the farm system because baseball is fickle and it usually takes a lot of luck and usually money to win 100. Caveat: the last time I really looked at the Padres transactions was the Musgrove trade, and it looked like they had a really bad record of losing guys like France in trades. If Preller was more patient, they would likely be a stronger team right now.
I think the tax is working... we are seeing most teams trying to avoid it... The Dodgers have all these resources but one championship in a weird fluke year...
