I think it’s hilarious that people want to give this organization and its dealings the benefit of the doubt. Why? The last several years have shown us all that they will continue to muck it up. The proof is in the pudding. Wait, but, they might, well it’s not so bad, well he’s better than, but it’s a rebuild. Good grief. Just be real.
Lovie Smith made such a dumb career moving by taking the Illinois job. Had no chance to win there and totally ruined his perception
Me: "What do you think of Lovie Smith being a head coach in the NFL again?" UI Booster: "I hope he dies in a fire." Me: "Thanks" UI Booster: "**** Lovie"
They managed to set the bar so low with Culley and the potential McCown hiring that people are somehow justifying the Lovie Smith hiring. In no way is this franchise looking forward now any better than it was 13 months ago. They are entrenched somewhere between bad and horrible, and now they are stuck with a coach no one wanted (Texans or otherwise!) for at least the next 2 years.
This rebuild is certainly not for the weak…it’s a process and there is a method to Nicks madness. The Texans where/are in no way close to competing seriously “yet”. No way should the Texans be trying to go all out and hire the top available candidates and put ourselves in a position to not be able to be flexible for the future. Right now continuity is king!!! I’ve said that before and so is stability. Especially for this team that had been stripped completely down! Tunsil trade soon Watson trade soon Keep building this roster keep acquiring assets and in the near future hopefully 2 years or so this team will be ready to really compete and to really hire their “Steve Kerr” / Mike Tomlin be it McCown or whoever. Having said all that I’m completely let down and this hire is completely underwhelming and they should of just hired Lovie as HC last year but maybe they wanted to bring Lovie along as DC first get him accustomed to this new era of Texan football then make him HC and keep building for another year or 2.
At the time there were a lot people in the region that felt UI could win with the right coach, and there were claims that they were committed to using the resources to win. At the time the media in Chicago said that Lovie wanted a return to Illinois and that he wanted to be a head coach again.... so there were not a lot of options. Also, Lovie is extremely arrogant and I remember him commenting that he would dominate defensively at that level and it wasn't the players on the field that mattered as much as the coaching and system. Smith also got like $20,000,000 guaranteed and huge bonuses of like $10,000,000. So he wanted a big pay day after fighting over his contract with the Bears numerous times.
He was also terrible independently of the job. Illinois was better immediately before him and immediately after him. He took over a team that had gone 5-7 and 6-7 and won 3, 2, 4, 6, and 2 games. He went 2-5 before getting fired. The next year, with a new coach, they went 5-7.
This team is in the exact same position they were in this time last year. Literally made no progress. It's kind of impressive if you think about it.
No, there is not. He's literally striking out on everyone he wanted to hire, either by making excessive demands that good HCs are rejecting or by waiting too long to make hires or whatever else. He's failing miserably at his job so far.
Kliff Kingsbury went from bad college coach to decent pro coach. I'm sure that's what the Texans are thinking.
Only the most blind homer would consider the last 2 head coaching searches as having some sort of fool-proof methodology that will "all be revealed". As it is, Culley was a failure... even though he was hand-selected by Casserio. People lauded Casserio for being decisive when getting rid of Culley as they all felt he had a plan or already knew what he wanted to do. Now, that didn't work out.... and they're likely again in this exact same position in 1-2 years (or mid-season if the wheels truly fall off to an even more embarrassing level).
