The Texans’ coaching staff may not look too different in 2022

Whomever the Texans eventually hire after firing coach David Culley, they’re widely expected to retain multiple assistant coaches.

Among those regarded as likely to be back in Houston in 2022: veteran DC Lovie Smith, special teams coordinator Frank Ross (a former Patriots scout who worked under general manager and fellow John Carroll University alum Nick Caserio), and former Packers and Chargers offensive line coach James Campen (who signed a three-year contract last year).

Texans passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton did a nice job developing rookie QB Davis Mills and the team highly respects him.

He has zero experience as a coach and just that he's even being interviewed is scary as hell. WTH

I assume this is one of the requisites for the job. If it is, I really want to like Caserio but the consolidation of power is really concerning.

This is false. He has been an assistant high school coach.

LOL. I didn't count that as an NFL head coaching plus.

that doesn’t change the fact if teams are making a change at the coaching position there roster issues which is my point.

Which is funny, given the the reason they supposedly fired Culley is that he didn't want to make many staff changes...

I agree but also think head coaches should bring in their own guys if they are inclined to. This franchise has been marred with backstabbing and finger pointing for so long now because of stuff like this.

Florio was on 610 last week and basically said this was complete bs. And it makes sense really, first year HC coming off a 4 win season and probably already knew was on the hot seat all of the sudden becomes Bill Parcels making demands.

I think the new coach being ok with Pep, Lovie, Frank, Campen is the difference in Gannon, McConnell and McCown.

Maybe he refused to move on from Kelly (or knew that was an organizational "red line" and saw that as his way to get fired and collect his golden parachute) and that was it for Caserio.

Or maybe Caserio just lied, like he did when he hired Culley and talked about how perfect he was.

I didn't expect him to come out and say he was hired to be fired. I did think Culley would get two years, that leads me to believe something changed.

Horrible decision we need to let whoever we hire have control over their staff

Culley being worse than expected, Mills showing improvement down the stretch, candidates opening up, etc...are all logical reasons IMO. We'll probably never know the real story but Culley banging on the table for Tim Kelly does not compute to me at all.

Make Pep the head coach, make Joe Brady the OC and leave everything else be.
