Was just trying to inject some humor in this derailed thread.

I saw Metchie contributing as a potentially viable option at slot WR (something the Texans haven't been able to draft/develop or acquire forever), but the cancer diagnosis puts a huge hole into that. I hope he gets well

Man, this Metchie news is a gut punch! I was really looking forward to watching him play and also wanted to get Davis Mills some weapons. All the best for Metchie's full recovery. We should look to bring a WR to give Mills some help in 2022. The o-line looks decent heading into the year, but everywhere else on offense looks questionable. We'll need some rookies and 2nd year players (Pierce, Collins, Jordan) to step up.

Yes!!!! That is a huge weakness compared to other teams. I'd love to see us pick up a seasoned Veteran who will make an immediate impact at WR. That goes for RB and TE as well. Somehow I don't see that happening, but Mills needs better targets. We were 30th in rankings last year at WR.

If Dorsett could stay healthy he would be a nice weapon

Absolutely pairing those 2 together alone improves our offense tremendously.

I think expecting this kid to come back from cancer treatment and be a top player is stretching it a bit. Best case he can get in some work each week and get accustomed to the NFL, but I wouldnt expect him to be any sort of difference maker until at least 1 year post clean bill of health.

While this is a smart way of thinking (exactly how i would approach it) and I hope we draft a WR 1.12 or 2.32, I disagree. Athletes today are freaks of nature and he could be ready a month or so into the season.

But this is the Texans we’re talking about.

Are there any examples of guys shortly removed from cancer therapy jumping back into professional sports at a high level? I dont think it has anything at all to do with the Texans totem and has everything to do with the fact that a guy going through chemotherapy and doing a fraction of the physical activity he is used to and expect him to come back as a rookie player and be counted on to be a top option for the passing offense is hoping for best case. There is a happy medium there somewhere. I would be shocked to see him as the #1 or #2 option next season, but thats ok. If he can regain his strength and explosiveness over time and put this awful period behind him it would be win.

In the sense of making an impact, yes. Being the first option, I didn’t think he was that when he was drafted. He’s at best a 2 (imo) but I don’t see why a 3rd option would be bad in his upcoming rookie season. That’s, of course, if he’s cleared before training camp.

I want to reiterate, we should be moving forward as if he’s not playing. I’d like for us to draft WR early so our new QB (Stroud ;)) has a legit weapon. If Metchie returns, that’d be great.

Cooks is gone and probably should be. I seen where someone mentioned a TE but this draft has a ton of TE talent. I see maybe 4 (sense Cade Stover returned to OSU) that can make a difference.

Back to the top, are there any examples? Not sure. I haven’t followed this close to players off the field until David Quessenberry so you may have me there. But I wouldn’t be surprised.

Do not know how quickly they got back on the field but the following had cancer:
Trent Williams, was told he was close to death
    James Conner
    Branden Bolden

Eric Berry and James Conner both had Hodgkin's lymphoma (not the kind Metchie had), went through chemo, and played the following season.

Completely forgot about these. Thank y’all. Do you know how productive they were their first season back?

Eric Berry made the Pro Bowl and Conner was good enough his JR year at Pitt to get drafted in the 3rd round.

Bolden and Williams did not go through chemo (surgery only).
