Collin Price went deep for the first time as a pro. Shay Whitcomb sent two out for Corpus, giving him 13 on the season.
Sandy Gaston hit his 12th homer of the season for the DSL Blue team. I'm sure this is a DSL Astros record, but Baseball-Reference only has player stats from as early as 2006 for the foreign complex leagues. The last player from the Astros system who was closest to a double-digit home run season in a foreign complex league was Herman Armas, who hit 9 in the VSL in 2007. He was released after that season, probably because he was turning 21 at the end of that season and it was his third year in Venezuela.
Who was the really good teenage C we talked about a few months ago? I posted videos? Whatever, it doesn't matter. Glad this kid is good.
Having two DSL teams once again probably improves the Astros' chances of hitting on these kids by a slight amount. Obviously, not all of them will be MLB players, but at the very least, they'll have more players that will make it out of the complex leagues. These guys are my top picks to head to the US in 2023: Position players Kenni Gomez - all the reports on his development and his current performance make him the Astros' top DSL prospect IMO. Sandy Gaston - his performance this year pretty much guarantees that he'll be in the US next year. 2023 will be a big test, especially if he starts in Fayetteville Alejandro Nunez - doesn't strike out a ton, probably the best pure hitter out of the names I've mentioned here. Could stick at SS depending on how his body develops, and at 17 going on 18, it can go a multitude of ways. Darwin De Leon - appeared from out of nowhere to become one of the top offensive performers for either DSL squad Luis Baez - signed for $1.5 million and has performed like the money was well spent. Ben Badler notes that he might have to move to 1B depending on his physical development, so he has to stay in the outfield for as long as he can. Waner Luciano - cooled off but OPS is still in the high .780s Rabel Colon - 7 triples already, looks like a wiry athlete type, which should give him some chances as he progresses Samuel Capellan - one of the best athletes from the 21-22 IFA class, which again, should give him some rope as he advances in the system Pitchers Jose Fleury - 1.42 ERA, 60 K:4 BB in 1st pro season; 60 K is 4th in the DSL Wilmy Sanchez - talked about him a bit in this post Amilcar Chirinos - 2-0, 1.26 ERA in 11 appearances (7 starts, 28.2 IP) for the Orange team, 9 BB, 41 K; 20 going on 21 years old in his second season Alain Pena - talked a bit about him and Alejandro Nunez in this post Jose Guedez - brief blurb about him here Carlos Mateo - 7 of his 9 appearances this season have been scoreless; 18-year-old RHP from the Dominican Republic Raimy Rodriguez - just turned 17; cited by Badler as a sleeper from the 2021-22 IFA signing class
Is Melton any good? I have done no research on this guy. Always been a big fan of Gilbert. He is a culture changer in the right situation. Seems to have the looks of a guy who will be a good player down the road.
Drew Gilbert crashed into the wall in CF. Tried to walk off on his own power but ended up being carted off. Hope he’s alright
Oh f*****, please don't let this be serious. Praying that it is just something that looks worse than it is. Was hoping to see him in Asheville next month. Collin Price takes over in RF, they are supposedly trying him in the OF and 1B some, too. He should be promted as well, doing great in a small sample size and is a bit older.
If it was in the majors I’d worry about amputation being necessary, but not sure if they are as good at dissembling at the minor League level. I kid. Mostly.
Justin Dirden went 3-5 (all singles) with no K and 2 RBI. David Hensley also went 3-5 (two doubles, one single) with no K and one RBI.
