Jake Myers is completely lost as a hitter, always late swings and can't hit for Power. He needs to Rehab the rest of the year, there is no strength and speed in his shoulder. That shoulder ain't healthy. CF Pedro Leon really needs to be called up There is no other Option on the Astros Roster.
The more I think about it, I think Taylor Jones is probably DFA'd (in addition to Goodrum) for the 2nd 40-man spot. He hasn't been exactly tearing up AAA this year, and his numbers are down in every category compared to last year. And he'll turn 29 this offseason.
While some others were moaning about losing Straw... for Maton... "I think the hitting catcher prospect was too tempting to pass on. We have historically had trouble developing our own. We either move them to other positions or there is some glaring weakness that makes getting catchers from outside the organization more appealing. Stubbs is too small. Castro had trouble with pitchers." But I wasn't alone. There were a few others who looked beyond the headlines of that trade and saw Yanier as a key piece to that trade.
The hope is that as a third C option, even if he doesn't play there, ()usty MIGHT be less reluctant to use Vasquez somewhere other than behind the plate. DH is not as risky with a third C option.
There are a lot of moving parts between 40 man roster moves and September Call-ups, not to mention dealing with Dustism playing time. I honestly hope the 40 man roster part is completed before September 1 so the September call-ups are eligible for the playoffs. I wonder whether Leon is healing fast enough for a quick look? With Meyers remaining on the 40, three 40 man openings are needed with Yanier (for Meyers), Brown (Sept Pitching) and another Position Sept call-up. More if they want to claim a player from another team.
Really surprised Diaz is getting called up. Ballsy move on Click’s part. They must be extremely high on him.
I have to think they have at least some assurances that Dusty is gonna actually give regular PA to Diaz and Yuli won't keep starting every damn game. Dusty is thrilled to mothball prospects from what we've seen. Hopefully Chaz is now the everyday CF, and we're just gonna accept that we likely aren't gonna get very much out of the position against RHP.
I hope so. In fact, I want all the 40 man moves we'll need completed by tomorrow. We can wait to activate them from the 40 to the active roster when it expands Thursday.
Not if we want to keep him. No options. That’s why the giants traded him for a guy they DFA’d 3 weeks later.
Or just low on Gurriel and Matijevic. At this point, Yuli can't still be starting going into the postseason. See if Diaz can fit in at DH or 1B. Worst case he gives you a Catcher that makes it easier to DH Vazquez. Then the other question mark is will Pena break out of his funk before the playoffs? He's hitting .195/.219/.308 since July 6. They know they need to generate more offense and starting 4 well below average hitters every game is a major problem.
Now that it looks like Diaz won’t be up until rosters expand I think it’s just to get him some exposure and a vote for him as the 3rd C over Lee.
I don’t see the point in keeping him and it’s doubtful Leon or Dirden could do any worse. Dubon postseason ABs would be criminal.
I don’t particularly care for Dubon but it’s fine during the regular season to have a guy that can play all 7 positions and not embarrass himself. Any post season AB should be cause for automatic termination of Dusty and/or Click
They can add them onto the 40 today or tomorrow without adding them to the active roster and they will be eligible.
I just saw that the playoff roster is 25, not 26. That puts a premium on position versatility and/or pitching length. ( assuming health) Maldy, Vazquez, Yuli( let's not pretend), Altuve, Bregman, Pena, Alvarez, Chas, Tucker, Mancini, and Aledmys Diaz are position player locks. JV, Framber, Javier, Lance, Urquidy, Pressly, Stanek, Neris, Abreu, and Montero are locks on the pitching side. That leaves 4 spots. At least 2 will be pitchers. Needs: multi-inning RP, and an OF who can play CF and/or RF. Unless Brown, Yanier Diaz, and/or another player like Leon are added to the 40 man roster before midnight ( as in 14 hrs from now) they will not be post season eligible. Dubon ( other than Meyers who is essentially given up on) is the only back up CF so he makes it. This team is very weak at CF/RF with Chas, Tuck, and Dubon the only ones who have played those positions this season. Mancini played RF for Baltimore but it was out of necessity and his arm may be worse than Meyers'. Tucker has played CF but the team has made it clear that is not preferred, and what's the point if it just leaves a hole in RF? After last post season and how the team feels about him, I can't see them leaving Luis Garcia off. Seth Martinez, Will Smith, Maton, and Mushinski are the options for the 12th pitching spot. I would give it to Martinez, but my gut tells me they want Smith because he is left handed and post season success and experience. Final spot is between: Maton, Martinez, Lee, Hensley, and Matijevic. At least in the ALDS, I don't see the team going with 13 pitchers. They have to choose from: a 3rd catcher, defensive versatility, and a LH bat
Where did you see 25 man limit? Everything I see shows 26 and it would be weird that they change that rule for the postseason.
