The FCL teams are playing each other again today and the Orange team has started off with five runs in the 1st thanks to a pair of two-run homers from Luis Encarnacion (5) and Fernando Caldera (3). Roilan Machandy added an RBI single. Caldera, a 19-year-old catcher from Venezuela, has improved markedly at the plate in year 2; he entered today hitting .280/.358/.427 in 34 games after struggling to a .167/.261/.295 line in 42 games in the DSL last year.
Kenni Gomez and Axell De Paula hit their 4th homers for the DSL Blue team, while Wilmy Sanchez allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out seven over 5 shutout innings on the mound. Waner Luciano hit his 6th home run of the season for the DSL Orange team.
Baez, Gomez, and Gaston are probably the 3 most hyped/exciting DSL prospects I can remember. Or they are all at least on par with the most hyped prospects we’ve seen from there in the last decade: Ariel Ovando, Gilberto Celestino, MiguelAngel Sierra, Yordan Alvarez, and Freudis Nova. Teoscar Hernandez was also a guy who put up big DSL numbers but he was a non-prospect at the time.
lol the Blue team responded with 7 in the bottom of the 1st. Dauri Lorenzo drew a bases-loaded walk and Luis Perez cleared them with a double. Perez proceeded to steal home and Dexter Jordan hit a two-run homer (2).
Remembering the time when Ariel Ovando was being touted as a future face of the franchise. Good times. (sending him straight to Greeneville instead of a complex league was probably a huge factor as to why he flopped)
That's about where I think he should be ranked. Likely to be another Josh Rojas type contributor with more pop or maybe Teoscar Hernandez. Would be nice to keep one of these guys eventually to stick out in left field for us for cheap.
