OKC Dodgers lose to Sugar Land Skeeters after leading 11-0 in the 3rd... I thought Dodgers only need to play a third of something to win it all.
He could be a Stubbs replacement when he's out of options. Chayce McDermott had a nice full season debut, throwing 3 no hit innings with 2 walks and 6Ks.
Definitely can’t ignore what he’s doing. 6 HR in 76 pa in AA while almost never striking out is very impressive. This is by far and away the deepest crop of catching prospects Houston has ever had. Also, this is going to be the most interesting Rule 5 draft in the last 10+ years. So many guys eligible who have had success in the upper levels.
The tweets that were in this post were deleted. OKC account tweeted out the tired-ass "almost like he knew what was coming" spiel about Bregman's homer and Sugar Land fired it right back at them after they won 12-11 the other night.
The Astros upcoming Rule 5 class is huge: C: Papierski**, Shaver, Manea*, Salazar*, Holderbach, Diaz*, Perry, Rodriguez, Alvarez IF: Pena***, Sierra*, De Goti*, Wielansky, Valdez*, Perez***, Hensley, Mendoza, Santana, Carrasco*, Cueta, Urdaneta OF: Julks*, Adolph*, Matijevic**, Costes*, Dawson**, McKenna*, Schreiber*, Rodriguez, Abreu P: Dubin***, Bermudez**, Conine*, France*, Hansen*, Mushinski*, Torres**, Donato*, LaRue, Blanco**, Hernandez*, Martinez, McKee, Kelly, Ferrell*, Riggs, Olczak, Scheetz, Lawson, Macuare***, Rivera**, Deason*, Bravo, Daniels, Ruppenthal, Tejada**, Serrano**, DeJuneas, Collado, Henderson*, Conn*, Freure, Cabral, Ceballos, Record*, JImenez**, Lopez, Jaquez, Taveras**, De Paula*, Rodriguez, Moclair, Garcia, Palmer, E Rodriguez, Bellozo, M Ramirez*, Bojorquez, Gonzalez In my opinion, Jeremy Pena, Shawn Dubin, and Joe Perez are locks to be selected if they aren't protected. And there are probably a dozen other guys that have some chance of being selected.
Probably a tad of the rationale behind the Straw/Toro trades…we do have a lot of protectable talent coming up the pipelines.
Chad Stevens has 5 RBI for Fayetteville today thanks to a two-run double and a three-run home run. He had zero RBI in his first 11 pro games.
Yet Jake Meyers is 9th in the Astros system according the MLB.... why? Because he wasn't a big prospect and is 25 years old. His bat speed, velocity off the bat, his ability to drive the ball and adjust to a pitch late in a swing don't matter a whole lot..... nor does his production in AAA this year. Luckily the Houston Astros front office and player development staff have a very different "prospect list" than what the MLB has.
The MLB list is pretty horrible unless it's a no brainer like Tucker, Correa, and Bregman. I don't think Alvarez was on any list. Chas and Meyer weren't on any list before now. Garcia wasn't on any list and he's one of our best pitchers this year.
I doubt Perez would make it on a big league roster. Lacks defensive flexibility (only played 1B & 3B so far in the minors) and has made a lot of errors. So basically he has to be good from day 1 to make it (which is of course is possible). He's definitely playing his way into being added to the 40-man, but I'd undestand if they gambled. Pena would be a capable bench player because he can play more positions (like Marwin was when we took him). Pitchers are always a risk because they can always be last guy out of the pen.
There are some crummy rebuilding teams who would love to stash a high-ceiling player like Perez on their roster as a bench bat who serves as the primary backup at 1B, 3B, DH, and maybe even LF. Keep in mind Perez was viewed primarily as a pitching prospect prior to being drafted and had a FB in the mid 90s, so he could even be used as a trash-time pitcher. If Perez is left unprotected I will be very very surprised if he isn’t selected. As a point of reference, the Orioles 13th position player so far this season in terms of plate appearances is Rio Ruiz, a guy who was quite similar to Perez as a prospect and in terms of defense, and hes only had 101 plate appearances. For a team that doesn’t care about winning in the near-term, tossing out a guy who may not be ready for ~35 games scattered over the course of a 162 game season in order to gain control of a very high ceiling prospect for 6 seasons makes sense.
https://amp.caller.com/amp/8220068002#click=https://t.co/p2iCz626ss Probably no room for him this season, but it would be nice to see Julks get some AAA time to prep for next season. He has a 4th OF profile but as athletic as he is there is room for more. Giant group of those type of OF prospects in Houston’s system (Julks, Adolph, Barefoot, McKenna, Daniels, Brewer, Hamilton, Dawson, Guerrero, Sandle).
The Orioles waived Ruiz in May, despite being eligible to be optioned, so that would actually backup what I am saying. It is so rare to keep marginal players on a big league roster all year, especially if they don't play a premium position. I think Perez would be selected. I just don't think he'd last on a 25 man roster. The best IF players to be selected and kept from the Rule 5 draft are Dan Uggla (who hit immediately) and Marwin Gonzalez. Other position players of note are Odubel Herrera (hit immediately), Josh Hamilton (hit immediately), Jay Gibbons (hit immediately), and the best player to ever get taken and stick is George Bell, who didn't hit immediately. Most other position player success stories were either traded or offered back and allowed to return to the minors.
If you agree he would be selected then there’s no argument from me that he probably wouldn’t stick. To your comment that Ruiz is evidence of that, my comparison of them was simply that 13th position players usually aren’t very good and don’t play much. Ruiz was protected on the Braves 40 man when he was at a similar point in his development to where Perez is now. Teams keep crummy players when they think the upside is worth it. The Orioles kept Richie Martin on their 25 man roster for all of 2019; he posted a whopping 52 wRC+.
