https://blogs.fangraphs.com/nine-low-hype-prospects-who-are-getting-close-to-the-majors/ Goldstein with a blurb on Jake Meyers, where he says he deserves a shot at the everyday CF job in Houston.
Straw has to be on thin ice at this point. He's simply bringing nothing to the table. I don't think he's as bad defensively as others, but he's certainly not adding anything in that regard. Watching him struggle with the little things like bunting or moving a man over with productive outs is particularly aggravating, stuff that should be his bread and butter given his light stick.
Apparently, his arm is worse than Straw's. The article called Straw's arm a cannon. I don't think that's true by any definition.
Right. I was just getting ready to post this blurb "While Meyers lacks Straw’s cannon for an arm," Perhaps I have missed things, but I've noticed his arm is nothing more than average at best.
Straw is still the weak link, but he's been a lot better the last 5 weeks or so than he was the first 4 weeks. I'm not sure the ice is getting any thinner. McCormick is going to need to be more than an all, nothing, or walk threat at the plate to push Straw. I hope the Astros add another OF at the deadline, but expect relief pitcher will be need no. 1, no. 2, and no. 3.
I believe Straw posts really high velocity on his throws from the outfield, but his accuracy is inconsistent and his throws are usually too late because he didn’t get a good jump and didn’t take a good angle to the ball. Straw has elite defensive measurables across the board, he just hasn’t been able to convert them to actual production.
Straw's throws seem slower this year, but as inaccurate as ever. He might be throwing softer trying unsuccessfully to improve accuracy. I don't think I've seen him make a competitive throw this season. His sprint speed was down in 2020 and is down again this year.
That’s interesting he mentioned Meyers instead of Dawson. Is Dawson not seen as good enough defensively to be an every day CF in the majors?
Why must we always wait until the deadline? There are plenty of teams that know they are already out of it. If you can’t get someone solid in relief and cf now you do it now.
1. The Astros have very little room under the luxury tax so waiting reduces the salary they have to take on. 2. Historically you will start seeing a couple moves mid-late June. Someone always jumps first. I remember one year Kelvin Herrera was traded early (June 18th, 2018) and that was the first big move that year.
1B Jake Adams was added to the AA roster and is in their lineup tonight. 6th rd pick in 2017, Luhnow graded his power a 70. Has strikeout problems. There are now only 4 position player prospects that I cannot find on any roster: C Cesar Salazar, C Nathan Perry, IF Deury Carrasco, OF Jordan Brewer.
