I really get the feeling that he'll get the shot with Yuli out and if he flubs, then he's done as an Astro. Davis and White can contribute in more ways and can more stand to be brought up/down as needed.
If one guy is gonna get an extended look with Yuli out, I think (and I think the Astros FO thinks) that it should be Reed. Davis and White don't need an extended audition at 1B to demonstrate their value. Reed does.
Gotcha. I dunno what they're seeing outside of the games, but in-game, Davis should make the team. I've been rooting for Reed for a few years now, maybe he's just right now this past week finally turning it on? I trust Ground Control.
I love that swing...His hands are far behind his body in the early part of the swing creating some good bat speed. A little long, but PRETTY!
Yea no doubt JD Davis started out and has been consistently better than Reed this spring. But seeing as they're pretty much at a ****-or-get-off-the-pot moment with Reed, it just makes more sense to give him the opportunity and have some finality on his Astros future. If they gave the spot to Davis, Reed's big league career with the Astros is pretty much over.
Why? Can't Reed go work on his [whatever] in AAA and be ready in case? He's not *that* old. Lots of guys finally figured it out at age 26 or so and became serviceable big leaguers, I just don't see the reason to give up on him yet. He's a good guy to have in reserve if nothing else. Same with White/Kemp/Etc....
They will still give Sipp 3 or 4 more outings at least. He's had three strong appearances and one dumpster fire. Still too early to tell on Sipp, but Boshers is looking competent in case Sipp can't do what the team needs him to do. I'm concerned about Rondon too. Looks like he may start the season on the DL. The conventional wisdom is that Hoyt would take Rondon's spot in the pen, but I'm not very impressed with what Hoyt has brought to ST this year. Granted he would only be used in low-lev situations but I would feel better if Paulino got the nod instead.
Maybe Sipp and Boshers break camp on The 25. When Rondon returns, Sipp or Boshers is let go. FWIW one can live with the last reliever in the bullpen blowing up every 3/4 appearances.
How many players finally figure it out with their original team though? Change of scene helps... may help both parties if he still has a semblance of value enough to get something for him. More time at AAA is just basically more of the same for him. He knows he can hit there. They team knows he can hit there. If he can’t hit at the MLB level, what’s the point of any of it?
