Sounds like a good athlete, newly turned into a pitcher with a minimal number of pitches on his arm. He has shown good velo & spin so the Astros will get him before he has developed too many bad habits and while he still has a healthy arm.
I have complete trust in the front office on getting talent that will produce or is of enough value to nab quality talent in return like the Cole, Verlander, Giles (pre-trade value), McCann & Gattis Whitley is probably a clear lock to be in this rotation next season, replacing Keuchel. Morton could be back for another season or retire, Astros could be in on another FA Starter. JB B, Armenteros, C Perez & H Perez are on the path for cracking the Astros rotation should Verlander retire or Cole signs elsewhere (I think they both pitch beyond their current deals for the Astros). They provide the bullpen with outstanding closer/setup men on the cheap that can let current vets walk and replace them with rookie scale deals or swap them for holes on the roster
Seth Beer was on my mind during the Draft, None of the Mock Drafts mentioned Seth, Seth Beer batting stance reminds me of Joey Votto, Joey has high walk ratio, Seth has a high walk rate also, This is the best lefty bat, since Lance Berkman. Seth is athletic in diving for balls in the outfield. 1B/LF/DH We need his bat protecting Carlos Correa. Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker. The Lineup in 2 years will have a lot of Righty, Lefty Combination, Depth, Youth.
Day two of the MLB Draft will begin at 11:30 Central with a preview show on MLB.com. Picks start at noon; the Astros' first pick of the day will be #102 overall. Here are the slot values for the Astros' day two picks: Round 3, Pick 102: $549,700 Round 4, Pick 132: $410,400 Round 5, Pick 162: $306,100 Round 6, Pick 192: $237,600 Round 7, Pick 222: $187,000 Round 8, Pick 252: $156,500 Round 9, Pick 282: $144,100 Round 10, Pick 312: $136,800
Day 2 names I like: OF Tristan Pompey OF Gage Canning RHP Cole Sands SS Ford Proctor 2B Kody Clemens LHP Jake Mangum C JJ Schwarz RHP Kyle Molnar RHP Nick Kingham RHP Chase Shugart LHP Justin Hooper IF Zach Kone
Quite a few years of this if the prospects pan out is going to be fun Springer CF Tucker LF Reddick/Straw RF Gurriel/Alvarez 1B Altuve 2B Correa SS Bregman 3B Stassi C FA/Beer DH Matijevic is much closer than the rest of this group in the OF, Celestino OF, Nova IF, Arauz SS & Toro-Hernandez 3B & Perez 3B all could turn into quality players and are still so young. Stubbs is someone in the mix as a backup catcher. Age is against R. Dawson who hasn’t mastered A+ and strikes out too much and Ferguson who is 25 and shown too little power in AAA Verlander Cole Whitley LMC JR Morton Loaded with Future Quality SP’s/RP’s: Bukauskas/C Perez/ Armenteros/Alcala/C. Martin/Adcock all are progressing well through the system. Throw Schroeder into that mix
How I group 'em: Potential star (3): Tucker, Alvarez, Whitley Good everyday player/MoR SP (3): Arauz, C Martin, C Perez Fringe regular/BoR SP (12): Straw, Rojas, Toro, Matijevic, J Perez, Beer, Nova, Ivey, Alcala, P Sandoval, Bukauskas, D Paulino
With as dominant as Beer was at the highest level in college, I am hopeful they will go ahead and put him in Quad Cities to start. If he kicks ass he could be in AA this time next year.
Incredibly unlikely but would be great if they had underslot deals with Schroeder and Beer and could pick Siani in the 3rd.
I'm assuming we are pretty confident Schroeder is signable. I like that we basically went for the best hitter available.
