Pretty sure there is not a single GM that will give much stock to Reed’s trade value (pro or con) based on what he does this weekend.
Taylor Jones promoted to AAA. I didn’t think they’d have room for him this season, shows what I know.
Agreed, BUT... stranger things have happened. I mean, you could see him go 5-10 with a couple HR's and some good AB's this weekend and some team could say- hey- this guy was once a top flight prospect, he's doing well in AAA, lets ask for him as the 2nd piece in a deal for a LHRP at the deadline. Not saying it's likely, but stranger things have happened than one shot turning into something more substantial.
It'll be interesting to see if this is a permanent thing. It's not clear how Jones, Reed, White, and Davis all fit on the roster, which could happen as soon as early next week. I guess White could play a lot of 2nd.
The one thing the Astros wanted is A.J Reed is to lose a lot of weight, he never lost weight, never gained more strength. He came into Spring Training 2 years in a row looking heavy.
Very true. Tyler White has gotten all of 11 PAs since he came back. It could just be a very temporary thing with Jones. That's what the minors are for after all.
With Jones' promotion, Corpus only has 11 position players; if Jones' promotion is permanent, I would expect to see Abraham Toro promoted to AA.
I'd like to see White sent down when Yuli comes up, and AJ Reed stay a few more days until Smith is ready. He's never had much of a shot. And I doubt Jones's promotion to AAA is long term, given how few position players Corpus has he either goes down, or Tanielu does. I want to see Reed get real playing opportunities, he hasn't had many. He's a former Baseball America College Player of the Year (not that it matters or means anything, but most others have done great in the majors) and has mashed the ball in AAA, where he has nothing left to prove. Still believe in him, would like to see him stick around with us at least through next year. And BTW, why was Preston Tucker brought up last year and not Reed when Preston saw ZERO playing time last year?
Toro (note to all, he dropped the hyphen-Hernandez) ranks in the Carolina League: 8th in OPS 12th in OBP 9th in SLG He's playing a good to solid 3B and is 1.5 years younger than the average player.
It's abundantly clear to anyone paying attention or reading the tea leaves that the FO has an issue with AJ Reed. He was the only guy on the 40 man not called up in September. White and Davis got called up ahead of him, when they were nominally behind him on the prospect radar. There's something they are looking for that he's not giving them, to date, or he'd have been here last September (and maybe broken camp with the big league camp with Yuli on the shelf ahead of Davis). I don't know what it is. He's pretty clearly got nothing left to prove in AAA as he's been an all star each of the last 2 years, he's hitting HR's, leading the league in RBI, has an OPS north of 900 I think. It's not like his sample size of failure in the big leagues is long. So, something else. He lost his prospect shine in a hurry. And, this FO is really smart, so I'm not saying they are doing anything wrong. My guess is that it's a him thing, not a them thing. Not taking to coaching? Not taking care of his body like a professional? Attitude? Mouth? Something. B/c I'd think if it was just "we think this guy sucks" they'd have given him a chance last September when they had the division locked up by 20 games and he was already on the 40. That's a message type move, for him to be the only guy (or 1 of 2 maybe?) on the 40 that's not called up.
Not true. Reed did lose a lot of weight and had muscle definition. His body improved greatly and he played better. However he gained it all back.
Wow. Would have thought this would be the perfect time to bring up Tucker and reward him for the great stretch he's having since Marwin will prob be starting in the infield for the next few games.
