If I remember right, he "retired" 1 or 2 days after the Michigan scandal. The timing seemed odd and my first thought at the time was that he was jumping to Michigan. But after it didn't happen right away, I just assumed there was no connection.
He never retired. Utah pushed him out to promote their DC which was apparently in the works for sometime. This seemed purely coincidental and a potentially fortuitous one for KW and Michigan.
