I know there's not too much you should read into spring numbers... but those strikeouts are killing his chances. He's had a few years to shorten that swing, and it looks like he still has to work on it. The real shame is that he has a good eye and an ability walk, but that contact rate is just awful. And a 50% SO rate... sweet mercy, that's terrible for a guy competing for a spot.
And again...call it "knee-jerk" or whatever, but at this point he has got to be out of the running. I'll be really disappointed if he's the opening day 1B out of some misplaced obligation. On a more positive note, good outing for Fiers. Our starting rotation alone is getting me stoked about the season
Eh. Not knee jerk. I (and I'm sure you) have watched this guy for a couple years. His swing shows no change and his approach hasn't varied at all. This spring alone hasn't damned him, it's when you see that his mechanics haven't changed at all and that it would be unfair to even him to expect better results than we have seen in the past.
And the other problem is that he does not do much in the other 50 percent. Low average and many weak outs when he does not K. His defense look good out there, but the bat is just terrible. Thats why i wanted Morneau for 1 year.
So let me try and sort this out through 11 Spring Training Games: Pitchers: Dallas Keuchel Colin McHugh Lance McCullers Doug Fister Mike Fiers Scott Feldman Josh Fields Pat Neshek Will Harris Tony Sipp Ken Giles Luke Gregerson Infield: Jason Castro Max Stassi Tyler White Jose Altuve Carlos Correa Marwin Gonzalez Luis Valbuena Matt Duffy Outfield: Springer Rasmus Gomez Marisnick DH: Evan Gattis Injury Replacements: Tucker starts year on 25 man Roster with Gattis on DL, Feliz starts year on 25 man roster with McCullers on DL.
Learning moment for Gonzalez (C). He didn't clear an angle for his throw on the final play. Ball hit the runner.
Should know that already, bad play for the catcher. Now, Worth is really having a nice ST, if the 25th spot is a decision between Duffy and him, who should we take? Right now i don't see Singleton making the team.
I agree, but, not out of the question IF Duffy does not hit in the final 20 days in ST. I think that spot is for one of the two.
12 pitchers are set. For the 12 position players, all are set except for first base, assuming Gattis can break camp as the DH. Tucker, Duffy, White and Reed are battling for the first base spot. A thirteenth pitcher or position will also be kept. If the Astros go with an additional position player, one of the three losers for the first base spot will likely have an inside shot. I do not see Worth making the conversation.
That's pretty much the exact roster I expect. Only difference is I expect the extra pitcher will be a lefty (Chapman, Wandy or Cotts), and not Feliz. Wandy can also double as a long man, but he has shown no actual advantage in recent years against lefties. Cotts and Chapman have.
I'm rooting for Colin Moran to get called up at some point. An OBP oriented guy like him or White would add so much to our SLGing heavy lineup.
Stassi injured, maybe out for 6 weeks. Right now our only other c in 40 men roster is Alfredo Gonzalez, i think we need to get another player. Detroit have 3 catchers, i would like to get 1 of the 3
