I'd like to give Kaepernick a go. He responds to tough coaching, and I think a change of scene and his desire to get better will work for him and us. I'd take him over injury-riddled RG3
The only problem is RG3 will be a FA while Kap is locked up and will be very expensive. Less risk with RG3 even when accounting for injuries.
If the Texans, who have been continually wasting years due to incompetent quarterback play, are not willing to take a bit of a risk in order to finally take a step towards solving the franchises longest-standing hurdle towards true competitiveness, then to hell with them. Screw risk. Try to be a competitive team. Stop flirting with the likes of Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, Matt Schaub, Ryan Fitzpatrick or anybody else who has no chance of being the answer.
Kap will be cut just like RG3, the difference is that someone might actually want RG3 while I can't imagine there being much interest for Kap
Kap took a team to the Super Bowl. He's still only 28. His stock is obviously not nearly as high as it once was, but he will absolutely receive interest.
The 49ers defense and their running game took a team to the Super Bowl, Kap was just along for the ride. I'm sure there will be some team out there that doesn't realize that, but I would imagine most do.
I'm not sold on any of the FA qb's out there, but Kap was productive earlier in his career. He posted a high rating, high average per attempt, and a good TD/INT ratio. It continued to slip throughout his career until he became captain checkdown.
The Texans have taken risks. All the QBs they've started the season with were risks. What they need to do is make a decision that has less of a risk, not more.
1) Kap was a huge part of that running game. I'm not saying he was some stud, but to say he was just "along for the ride" is not accurate. He made many plays. 2) The 49ers defense gave up 31, 24, and 34 points in that playoff run. They hardly carried them. 3) Once again...Kap is no stud. He won't get signed to a huge deal. He will absolutely receive interest from teams looking for a potential option at QB.
I hope we get jayron kearse at some point in the draft if he declares and he's leaning towards entering.

We need to get a QB and bring him along, but first, one or two or three more seasons of Brain Hoyer. I asked Bob McNair if at this point he'd rather find a QB via draft or trade. McNair didn't hide his feelings tonight when it came to drafting a QB. "We need to get us a good young quarterback and bring him along". On finding young QB, McNair says he, Bill O'Brien, Rick Smith, and his son Cal will all have input in process. "It will be a consensus." Bob McNair 'We'll probably want a veteran to work with a young guy. Brian [Hoyer] did a lot of good things this year'
It's easy to jump on McNair for being captain obvious but this quote does seem to rule out bringing in rg3 or Kap.
http://walterfootball.com/draft2016stock_19.php ^^^^^ Carson Wentz love fest. Talk that some teams like him as best QB in the draft (per Daniel Jeremiah). Connor Cook dropping like AJ McCaron did for the same reasons (personality issues with teammates then declined invitation to Senior Bowl so it seems like he's trying to hide something).
