Watch out, the Southern hemisphere is taking over! First the 2010 WC in South Africa. Then the 2014 WC in Brazil. Now the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Domination.

I can't believe that some people actually thought that Chicago was the favorite among the cities. I lived 4 years in Chicago and I for one am glad that it did not win the bid. Yes Chicago does look great across Lakeshore Drive (when the wind isn't killing you), but the outskirts of the town are not that great. Besides, isn't 6 months of construction work every year enough? Imageine if they had gotten the Olympics and had to widen all the highways (which they would have to). 2014 WC and 2016 Olympics will be a huge momentum boost for Brazil, and the entire South American continent. And that is a good thing.
Man, you should see the outskirts of Rio. In any case, I want the next American city to be Houston. I can't root for anyone else.
I know you mean this sarcastically, but globally attended and broadcasted sporting events being hosted in some of the largest cities and regions on the planet is not domination, it's, at long last, inclusion.
Like I said earlier, Rio deserved it and is the better choice. I rather have Houston before Chicago. So here is to houston getting a bid one day!
Just so you know, indoor sports like Gymnastics, Wrestling, Basketball, Judo, Weightlifting and about a billion other Olympic sports can be played at night.
dude in brazil with now with all the brazilian hotties there too. OMG I am so watching every single soccer game in the 2014 WC and the 2016 olympics
Im assuming they are going to give the Macarana Stadium a much needed facelift. Other than this place and the beaches, I wonder where else are they going to have events. Brasil has always been a big part of my heart. Calling friends tonight. I love this place...
i would have preferred madrid b/c it's easier for me to get to and in all honesty, rio is a dump.....but i'm glad south america got it and also glad that the strongest economically positioned country (brasil) of the 4 candidates won it......it would have sucked to have a venue with uncompleted facilities due to economic meltdown...
Uh, the outskirts (actually even the inkskirts) of Rio ain't exactly all beaches and sunshine either, and their transportation infrastructure makes Chicago look like model of efficiency (it's not, i lived there too). Brazil is apparently way behind schedule to build the WC stadiums.
I dont think its great place for the Olympics but maybe this will get the government to fix up the streets of RIO. There will be tons of soldiers and policeman around Im assuming. Chicago would have been perfect.
i think probably the only venue that was ever built up according to schedule and budget was sydney.......athens was completed like days before opening ceremony and london has gone from $4B to $15B total cost now but i'm more concerned with a venue flat out not being able to complete the facilities not due to incompetence or south american siesta we'll do it tomorrow, but if they just run out of money......the olympics is like a great party to visit every 4 years and a half-assed party on the cheap would be a letdown
So doesn't today's news actually help Houston, assuming we are going for the 2020 Games? No way they put it here back to back, and I read somewhere this is the first time we have lost consecutive bids.
