If Musgrove continues, I wonder how they find a spot for him. Would Feliz get first crack for an injury replacement?
Some nice pitching performances tonight. -- Brady Rogers threw 6 shutout innings with no walks and 8 Ks. He's now 8th in ERA, 5th in WHIP, and 2nd in Ks in the hitter friendly PCL. -- David Paulino put up 5 shutout innings with 1 hit, 1 walk, and 7 Ks. He now has a 1.80 ERA, a flat 1.00 WHIP, and 51 Ks in 45 innings as a 22 year old in AA. He doesn't quite qualify for the leaderboard based on IP, but he should be in the top 3 in ERA and WHIP shortly, and is in the top 10 in Ks despite his inning count.
Kent Emanuel followed Paulino out of the Corpus bullpen with 5 strikeouts over 4 perfect innings. This was his 2nd appearance since coming back from Tommy John surgery.
any chance paulino makes a top 100 midseason list? he is owning people in AA. what is his ceiling? frontline starter?
Amazing to think about how much talent is still in the minors despite the departure of A LOT of high-ranking prospects.
I think his ceiling is that high. He has an injury history but if he stays healthy his floor is a late inning reliever. He should be on the back half of most Top 100 lists this year and in terms of value I think he is in line with how Velasquez/Feliz/Martes were viewed at the beginning of this season.
Absolutely love what we've seen from Emanuel out of the gate. The lack of LHSP in the system makes him an important prospect. Both he and Grills could be in breakout seasons this year and would really provide a boost to that area of the farm. Also anxious to see how Patrick Sandoval and Austin Nicely perform once short season games start up. Brady Rodgers is really underrated; he's been one of the top performers in all of AAA and he's still fairly young. And as a former 3rd pick it's not like there's no pedigree there. Looks like a future quality BoR SP or at least a good long reliever. If he keeps it up he will definitely not make it through another Rule 5.
Yep, White, Altuve, Correa, Moran, Singleton, Kemp, Tucker, Marisnick, McCullers, Devenski, Feliz, and Giles are all 25 or under. And that's ignoring the heap of prospects that were traded away. Truly amazing that Houston still has the top end talent (at least 4-5 Top 100 guys in Reed, Bregman, Tucker, Fisher, Cameron, Musgrove, Martes, Paulino) and depth (guys like Brady Rodgers and Garrett Stubbs barely get talked about, aren't even in the org Top 30) they have.
DSL rosters are out. Blue Orange Gilberto Celestino will start his career with the Orange team, along with Yeuris Ramirez and Enmanuel Valdez. Ronny Rafael, who got $1.5 million in 2014, is on the Blue team.
I am getting real curious if any of the prospects are darting up the prospect list. I would think Paulino, Bregman, Tucker, and Fisher should see significant boosts in the prospect rankings.
Francis Martes @ Northwest Arkansas: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R (1 earned), 3 BB, 6 K The Hooks won 3-2 thanks to Teoscar Hernandez's solo homer in the 8th.
Evan Grills on the hill for Corpus again. Looking good thru 2 IP; he's one of those guys nobody talks about and then all of a sudden Houston adds him to the 40 man roster and calls him up this September. Young lefties with good stuff and good AA numbers don't get thru the Rule 5.
From BA. satchel (las Vegas): Hi Vince, Astros farm is loaded with arms, how do you rank Paulino, Abreu and Musgrove? Any of the three a frontline ace type of arm? Thanks Vincent Lara-Cinisomo: Aces are rare, ultra-rare. I think you’ve got three mid-rotation types at their best. For me, Musgrove’s command and physicality put him at the top of this list. I saw Abreu about a month ago, so I’d put him next then Paulino. But that’s me. Paul Reiter (Cleveland, Oh): I caught a start a month ago and last week from Albert Abreu. So far in my opinion Anderson Espinoza and Junior Fernandez are the 2 highest upside pitching prospects in the LOWER levels this year. But what I saw in Albert Abreu was a future #1 SP. Obviously his secondaries are below average right now but his ability to throw them is great so I believe it's just a matter of time before they become above average to plus pitches. What is your take on 'the great Albert Abreu'? Vincent Lara-Cinisomo: Espinoza probably has the highest upside and is the most polished. Fernandez is in a group with his Peoria brethren such as Sandy Alcantara and Derian Gonzalez. No. 1 guys are really hard to find. How many are there in the majors? Five-10? Abreu has a good fastball, but the secondary stuff needs polish. He rushes the delivery at times. No. 1? Not likely. I think the ceiling is more mid-rotation. Tyler (Toronto): Who is the better overall prospect Orlando Arcia or Alex Bregman? I understand that Arcia was rated higher at the beginning of the year, though do you see Bregman becoming the better player in the long run? Vincent Lara-Cinisomo: I do. I love Bregman’s bat and approach. He’s so polished already and the power’s been a real surprise. Maybe he’s a third baseman, especially in Houston, but I’d take him over Arcia.
