You did the calculation right. You just typed in the pool number wrong. 5% of 5,735,000 is 286,750 as you posted, which is less than what we went over. Hopefully as No Worries mentioned Dustin Hunt did sign for $130,000. At any rate, I doubt Luhnow would lose a draft pick by accidentally going just barely over the 5% threshold. I'm sure it is fine.
Ah gotcha. Yeah I'd imagine the Astros would be getting a lot more attention if they really did mess up. I don't think I've heard anyone else talk about it
The pool was $5,928,300. I'm not sure which number the 5% actually applies to. Jim Callis was kind enough to answer me: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Based on pool with reductions for unsigned players. <a href="https://twitter.com/MLBDraft">@MLBDraft</a> <a href="https://t.co/dSaAyseHbw">https://t.co/dSaAyseHbw</a></p>— Jim Callis (@jimcallisMLB) <a href="https://twitter.com/jimcallisMLB/status/756187648721575936">July 21, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Was this the draft that started the downward long term trajectory? There are no players from this draft left in the organization. Forrest Whitley busted Ronnie Dawson busted Jake Rogers hit but for the Tigers after being in the JV trade Brett Adcock busted Abraham Toro panned out for a 5th rounder but was a fringy player Outside of those top 5 rounds, several guys ended up being AAAA players: Nick Hernandez, Ryan Hartman, Alex DeGoti, Taylor Jones, Chuckie Robinson, Darius Vines By the way, Avery Tuck should have signed. Ended up getting $125k bonus in 2018 and never made it out of A ball.
I'd put an asterisk next to Whitley, he didn't bust because of talent evaluation or early minor league performance (he was, remember, the #1 pitching prospect in baseball at one point), he busted because of injuries both physical and "between the ears", which are hard to scout for. Ronnie Dawson made a whole bunch of money based off of his College World Series performance with Michigan that year, iirc.
Meh. He’s an elite defensive C with 2 seasons of 2+ fwar. Not a stud or anything but a very good outcome for a 3rd rd pick.
He's gonna be a ~10-year MLB catcher. That's not a bust in the 3rd round. And as was mentioned: being a big part of the initial JV trade = Zero Bust
We have done this for years. Using ONLY offensive numbers to determine if a catcher is good or not is tragically short sighted.
