I'd say $8-10MM/year more than Hamels... presuming he gets close to what Scherzer got (you'd also have to lock him for more years... to the point where he'd be older at the end of his contract than Hamels would be).

From a short-term (i.e.- this year) standpoint, Price is the much better option... younger, will cost less prospects.

Looking "long-term", presuming you don't have to give up a ton, Hamels may still be the better overall deal.

Astros have best deal on table right now. ****My assumption****

Hamels isn't biting, but they are going to basically going to play it out to the end then give him off to the second best deal available.

While a deal for one of the SPs probably strings out until the deadline I'd like to see a move made for Benoit. Don't want anything to slip away because Luhnow is waiting on Hamels.

Why wouldn't they just hold him and deal him in the offseason, or next year? The team has the upper hand with Hamels under contract. People will still give up a lot for Hamels next year. Unless the Phillies believe he might fall apart.

Market won't be nearly as good. Lots of SPs will be available both in FA and trades.

Funny, cause what I've heard when he has spoken it sounds more like he would certainly consider where he was going

As opposed to just taking biggest offer

I think the overall situation matters a lot to him

He won't be cheap, but if we made a legit offer he don't come across as the guy who would just go somewhere else just because the offer was a little more

There's some of that fear... and there's a huge crop of free agent pitchers in the off-season that wouldn't require any pitching-starved team to give up any prospects for.

There's also the fact that Phillies fans don't want to be "bad" for that much longer... you delay the rebuild further (of which a Hamels trade is a vital component), and you simply delay getting good again.

Frankly, if the Astros are "better" next season... with another year of growth for McCullers, VV, and they finally see if Appel has "it"... they may not be as desperate for a starting pitcher as they are now (I'm presuming they're not going to start easing the starts for LMJ and he may not even be the #3 or #4 guy in the playoffs as is).

Lot of free agents available in offseason this year

Teams trying to win now could drive price up

"Kind of pitched David Price for the Astros next year, so hopefully we can get a deal done soon," Keuchel said.

    Price's reaction?

    "Hey, open up that checkbook"

I agree he will be open to go to the right situation.... provided they pay him. The Cubs are going to be after him, as are the Yankees/Red Sox/Dodgers.... all teams unlikely to be beaten in a flat-out bidding war, and not so crappy places to live either.

Not at computer now but could find some other quotes that show he isn't likely to simply accept highest offer

If he doesn't get traded here then yea I seriously doubt he signs here

If he comes here now and loves the clubhouse I think we would have a legit chance

I guess that makes him a yankee or red sock next year.

What's crazy is, the Stros could pay him that, Kazmir 15/yr, and still have a bottom third payroll in baseball.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I've had it in mind that he's going to end up here all along (lessened a little by Kazmir trade). It may sound ridiculous, but I think the Keuchel recruiting at the all-star break and Luhnow pretty much admittedly supporting it, is actually of significance. Sounds like silly all-star break banter, but I don't think there's any way Keuchel does that without the GM telling him to.

It will be huge money, but I doubt it is 30 million a year. I would guess around 25. Lot of options for teams looking for pitching this coming offseason

I suppose... then again, our owner is still spouting out quotes about "being in a position to possibly add the 'right' contract." (etc.)

It is all talk... till it isn't. I'm sure they'll make an offer to him (regardless of trade or no trade), just like they have several free agents and international/cuban players the last couple of years. However now, they can try and sell them on future winning as well as money.

So much this. With the position players being young and cheap the Astros could make the rental trade for Price and give up less prospects and then throw a huge deal his way in the summer. If it's money he is after it would be hard to beat Houston. Screw it I'm convinced forget Hamels lets go get Price!

Why would he take "less" than what Scherzer got?

I'd consider that the new baseline for ace's coming off arbitration years.

Teams can possibly spread it out over an extended amount of years (like the Nats are doing with Max) in order to lessen the luxury tax/revenue sharing hit they have to report.

There are, but he's still easily by himself in Tier 1.
