Jon Morosi and Jim Bowden were both tweeting KC's interest on Cueto 3 days before the deal went down

Most of these guys tweet over and over about the obvious teams going after their obvious needs though, so it would probably be tough to find a trade that happens that at least a few guys weren't tweeting about ahead of time

I'd agree the tweets have little value, other than they are fun to read (at least to some of us)

You might be right, the GM on the radio said it was about the finality of the deadline though. He said it was about the worry that if you turn it down, it could be gone by the time you come back to take it.

I don't know that in today's instant contact world that face to face meetings make that much of a difference. Luhnow was even talking about how he was texting GM's throughout the day leading up to the Kazmir deal. Texting has likely changed the way a lot of this is done

    This

My mother in law used to work for Crane and you are spot on with this post. She cant stand Crane but said the Stros would become a winner under him. He's the anti McNair.

Wish I new how to use the rep system.

You sure about that? I follow both of them... and just looked back at their tweets, and the only things about the Royals and Cueto specifically being involved happen right as the first trade was falling apart (the night before the trade actually went through).

There could be the other blah stuff like "so and so could be interested"... which really doesn't take an insider to post.

Agreed that tweets are entertaining... but there's more mis-information/crap than ever now, despite having immediate constant access to it.

Yea you can access the link to those tweets on mlbtraderumors from the Cueto thread there

Morosi was more of the general tweet like you were saying, Bowden said KC was "all in" on Cueto on the 23rd

But again, those guys tweet so much that they pretty much tie all the obvious players to the obvious teams at one point or another

Cubs and Astros competing for Ross. Seems much likelier than Hamels.

    It's a shame Preston Tucker apparently can't play 1B

His slugging percentage of .467 is third on the team, trailing only Lowrie who played 18 games, and Correa

He would rank 6th in the AL among all starting 1B

His numbers overall aren't as good as the guy many of us here want us to trade for (Lind), but they aren't too far off and he is already here

But, apparently from what we hear, it's not an option

Really nice guy by all accounts. In fact he donated a ton of cash to Houston Christian High School to let them build a legitimate game gym for their basketball and volleyball teams. Pretty much seen as an all around great man

Many fans see him as a guy that takes that to a higher level than needed, and won't let the Texans acquire certain players if they don't meet his "people criteria"

Not saying I agree or disagree with that, and certainly don't want to discuss the Texans on this forum and especially on this thread....but that is the gest of what he was referring to

Am I the only one that doesn't want to trade for Hamels if it means giving up some combination of Reed/Phillips/Moran/Appel (and I can't imagine it wouldn't). As crazy as it sounds I'm almost more excited for next season than this one given the possibilities next season with this stellar crop knocking at the door. Though, a rotation of Kazmir/Hamels/Keuchel/McHugh/McCullers...there really is no wrong answer. My what a time to be an astros fan.

Don't worry, Luhnow won't be trading our top 3 prospects (not counting the 2015 guys) + Moran in a deal for Hamels. I could see one of those guys, along with a guy like Kemp and maybe Santana and/or lower level guys. A really good package, but he won't be trading Reed/Phillips/Moran/Appel for Hamels or anyone else for that matter

As far as being more excited for next season, I do agree that the future is extremely bright, and we should be good for a long long long long time

But you never know from year to year, and this year there isn't a dominant team in the AL, so we should "go for it" and try to win it all

What about this...trade for Jesus Montero, the former top prospect. He got into some trouble a year ago for being lazy but has shown up in shape this year and is destroying AAA pitching. Got called up for a few games but was recently sent down.

Maybe he could be had on the cheap? Still just 25 and could help solve some 1B issues...

strange trade. upgrading a position of relative strength...i'm not sure how many wins that'll add to the jays total.

more pop obviously, and i hear from a jays fan friend that reyes has been a big liability in the field this year, but...meh.

sounds like reyes may be out of colorado by friday.

Haven't followed Reyes defensively much this year, but if it really is a big defensive upgrade I certainly wouldn't "meh" that. Defense at SS is huge, and especially when your pitching staff isn't great.

agreed. And let's remember Reyes is a 32 year old who still relies on speed for a lot of his value. With Tulo under contract forever (basically), this removes that issue long-term

(not touching the health piece of it knowing they both have their own laundry lists..)

Seems like upgrading the actual pitching would be more prudent than upgrading the defense behind the crappy pitching.

Curious to see what prospects they gave up.

This deadline is already wild. And it's just getting warmed up.

And I would guess Colorado will be moving Reyes

But, put him in that ballpark/atmosphere in Colorado and he could be very very good. Maybe they wanted to save whatever money they are saving in the deal and add whatever prospects will be included and move on
