If you haven't already, I highly recommend attending a game at PNC Park. Especially, a nighttime weekend game. There's almost always fireworks or some sort of post-game concert or activity going on. Absolutely stunning view of the city, great atmosphere, affordable and you get to see one hell of a ball club It's bucket list material.
99 years ago today Babe Ruth outpitched Walter Johnson at Fenway to win 1-0 in 13 innings. Both pitched complete games, Ruth went 0-4 with a walk and a K at the plate. Here's the box: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS191608150.shtml Wish they had the pitch counts.
Speaking of Babe Ruth, here are his stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml How is it that he only won 1 MVP away (1923) and only two other times finished in the top 10 (1931 and 1932). His stats were far and away better than anyone else all the years in between? For example, in 1924, he had a 1.251 OPS and 46 HRs. Here's the MVP voting: http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1924.shtml#ALmvp He's not in the top 22? No one on that list even has a 0.900 OPS and only one hit 20 HRs.
Sportswriters have always been terrible? They colluded to just give the MVP to the best player not named Babe Ruth? I dunno.
I thought it was because they only allowed you to win it once up until they changed the award in 1931? Something like that.
Red Sox have hired Dombrowski as president of baseball operations. General Manager Ben Cherington is out.
On MLB Network, they just had a discussion about the Dodgers' development of what they call a "speed camp" in their minor league system. Basically, they just take guys whose speed tool is their primary tool and try to convert them into specialty pinch-runners. They even drafted a guy this year, Edwin Drexler, solely to have him run, with the idea that he could be in the big leagues down the stretch run. Basically, they're trying to duplicate the success the Reds had with Billy Hamilton a couple of years ago and that the Royals had with Terrance Gore last postseason. Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting concept. Similarly, I've always thought there would be value in teams trying to teach pitchers who are about to wash out of the system how to throw a knuckleball, in hopes of stumbling upon the next R.A. Dickey. It certainly can't hurt.
Another fan has fallen to their death, this time at Turner Field. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Statement from the Atlanta Braves: <a href="http://t.co/bABsS5F97j">pic.twitter.com/bABsS5F97j</a></p>— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) <a href="https://twitter.com/Braves/status/637801506465546240">August 30, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Statement from the Atlanta Braves: <a href="http://t.co/WvmeT8BaSr">pic.twitter.com/WvmeT8BaSr</a></p>— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) <a href="https://twitter.com/Braves/status/637823518684540928">August 30, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
