No. But it is popular. Especially in friesland (the north of the netherlands). But soccer is more popular.
I'd say it's one of the national sports, but it's not the national sport. That's football, as mentioned earlier. It's insane just how we've dominated it so far this year. Holland traditionally does well in hockey and swimming as well during the summer editions.
Yeah, it seems like the Dutch bragging about their domination in speed skating is akin to Americans bragging about their domination in basketball during the Summer Games. It's still an awesome accomplishment, but at the same time, it's fairly obvious that the sport is geared towards Dutch success.
How is it geared towards Dutch success?! Not sure I understand the comment. Also, that's 89 out of 92 of our own medals, not totals. That just means we're pretty good at speed skating, but suck at the rest. Lol. Other countries get plenty of speed skating medals as well.
I would compare it to the Jamicans and short distance running: Ice skating is a sport that was avaliable to many countries at around the same time and the Netherlands did not get a huge advantage on the development of the game (like the US did in basketball). Jamica and the Netherlands are similar in relative size Both countries have a large percentage of their medals in speed skating or short distance running Both dominate their respective sport but there's enough competition to not make it completely one sided
