Considering Hernandez made a big adjustment with his stance this year plus his youth, he may be the real deal. I won't forget how most people had never heard of Ben Zobrist (both were 6th round draft picks).
He also has been mediocre his entire minor league career, with no signs of progression. I think it's dangerous to make projections based on 81 ABs that are completely out of line with anything he's done in the past or was ever expected to do. This is all small sample size, but even if you break down his 24 MLB games, his first 12 had an OPS of 0.845 and his last 12 had an OPS of 0.698 - much closer to his minor league stats. His first 6 games had an OPS over 1.000 and then he's just been on a steady decline since. By the end of the season, he's likely to be a completely forgettable player. For comparison, Brett Wallace in the majors was about as good as Hernandez in the minors.
Right..but that's not really my point....my point was in response to RM95's suggestion that what we traded for means better production out of the current lineup. I doubt that seriously. And I get that current production doesn't matter to most of you...so i'm kinda alone on this.
My point was we have a major-league ready OF in the deal, regardless of the small sample sizes of both players, that will not result in us kicking the can down the road considering we have several pitchers who potentially can give us the performance Cosart has (probably a lot better than his 8+ era in July). We didn't trade for two A guys who won't see the field until 2016 at the earliest thus kicking the can down the road. This changes nothing for the future.
This is a fun read on the day we call up Folty This was a little over a year ago. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=241444&highlight=cosart+called+up I wonder what prospects we'll flip Folty for next season?
He's had hundreds of starts - his minor league performance flashed all sorts of warning signs that have been the same in the majors. All through the last 3-4 years, he's shown no progression in all those areas. It would be different if he dominated the minors and was in an adjustment period but it's completely in line with his minor league career - he's never had good control, he's never struck people out, he's always given up a lot of hits. I agree with all of that except for the last sentence. You can look at all sorts of things to give you an educated guess on whether they will figure it out - it's not completely random. We have an advanced analytics front office specifically to help identify the guys that will and won't. All the peripherals for Cosart say he's not that guy. Does that mean he won't develop? Of course not, but it suggests other guys might have a better chance. The Astros have more than 5 starting pitchers in their youth movement. They can't give them all time to figure it out - they don't have that much rotation space. They have to pick and choose based on the potential they see. I imagine they see more potential in the other guys than Cosart.
Over the course of the remainder of 2014 and 2015, I would fully expect the new guy to outperform the old guy, based on the much larger samples of their minor league careers. I'm not sure 10 or so good days by Hernandez is enough to overcome all that data.
But who was highly regarded as a starting pitcher and maintained a 3.50 ERA through 447 innings of work at the minor league level.
I do not understand why you would expect that...because of AAA numbers? Ask Singleton about those. Ask Brett Wallace. Ask J.R. Towles. I'm going to assume that the guy who has shown me he can hit major league pitching is more capable of continuing to do so than the guy who hasn't.
No...I'm good with them actually bringing these guys up and developing them at this point. I don't understand the 10 games part.
And the guy we got to plug into the OF is someone that we can develop. He has far more potential than a guy who showed up earlier this month that had a hot start. We just got the #2 and #3 prospects from the Marlins, one of which is going to be an everyday OF. Kike has never sniffed that high on a prospect list. Sorry, 12 games. Referring to Major's stats about our all of the sudden future in the OF who has regressed since his hot start and now has just as much time regressing.
I hope you're right..I hope he's awesome. I'm just not buying into all of this the way I was before. And I'm realllllllyyyy tired of it all, in case I haven't made that point clear. I mean come on..it's me...i'm not going anywhere. I kept score watching the 'stros on TV with my dying grandma so that when she finally (and hopefully) woke back up she could tell how the game turned out. I've had season tickets through this sh#tstorm. My kids wear orange and blue everywhere. I'm not going anywhere...but God, I'm getting tired of this.
I wish we could fast forward it to and I'm anxious for winning baseball again, we just (obviously) disagree on this move changing the timing of it. I'll bow out now. Let's get that beer soon.
Would be interesting to see how many who support this deal have csn and how many don't, and same on other side. If you don't go to many games and you don't watch them on TV, I'm sure it's a lot easier to take BTW, Astros just announced they are raising ticket prices next year. Some if this stuff you couldn't make up if you tried
I watch nearly every game on TV. But basically, you're admitting that your emotion is driving your opinion on this trade.
I don't have CSN, but I do make it out to games often. And for certain games I'll go somewhere where I can watch on TV.
Interesting back and forth; it feels like we preach patience a lot in these forums, LOL... While I tend to side (whatever that means) with RM95... MM and I have had several very similiar Texan-related discussions and the seemignly unfortunate fallout of a years-long rebuild - even if it ultimately proves successful - is that a lot of fans permanently lose trust. MM, I don't want to put words in your mouth (and this is not specific to just you) but my sense is that when it comes to the Texans, at least... there's just too much history to completely overcome to fully invest in them (which probably has some residual Oiler dirt on it, I'm sure), yes? And I'd hate to see that happen to the Astros, too. I appreciate that the Astros have been forthcoming and transparent about what they're doing. I just wonder if they took a little too much for granted thatt winning would cure all the wounds. I think to a point, it obviously can/does - but I also think it dulls the excitement because wounds don't heal *that* quickly...
Of course my emotion plays a big part of it. I'm a fan Most if my life players have been viewed as players, people It's only the last few years that everyone is simply an asset Don't like that but nothing I can do about it
I love the Texans..not nearly as much as the Astros or Rockets. Mostly because I didn't grow up with the Texans. But my kids are growing up with them...and I have zero other rooting interest in NFL football other than the Texans (aside from the fact I was really happy for NOLA when the Saints won). I'd be thrilled if the Texans won a Super Bowl....but I could plant a flag and die if the Astros finally won a WS. It's so silly to say this..but I think if the Texans were called the Oilers and had those colors, I'd feel differently...it would connect to something for me. And you're right...I'm not in love with the way that organization handles things. In this town, if you care about the Astros you're an anomaly. That's how far they've let it go. Most people...even people who grew up rooting for this team...couldn't name you more than about 3 or 4 players on the roster. It's kinda sad, actually. The damage done to the goodwill of that franchise is just remarkable. They have nothing to sell but "next year", "patience" and hope built around prospects...nothing else but 100 loss seasons. I also think it's difficult to engage and invest in teams that don't seem to be interested in building "teams"...and I'm not arguing they're not really trying to build a team, but it's easy to see the perception that they're not. That they're just swapping pieces around. It makes it akin to following someone else's fantasy team.
