Makes me think they've soured on Singleton, too....to bid that much for a guy who plays 1B. Singleton needs to get his act together.
Singleton might have a bad habit and his work ethic might not be good. Too bad about Abreau if true. He could of taken some of the pressure from Springer. What shocks me was the team who sign him. Chicago White Sox's were view as one of the favorites to draftfirst but it seems they would rather reload seeing how painful of a rebuilding it can be specially in baseball.
I don't know about these direct free agents, but my impression with those Japanese players that come over with the "posting fees" is all blind bidding.
They could have DH'd either of them. They may have wanted to hedge their chances. But no matter what, Singleton does come into next year with a lot to prove.
For Abreu it was a straight negotiation I believe. The posting fees are only for Japanese league players.
Only time will tell if we made the right pick, but man we sure could use a pitcher like Michael Wacha. Kid is unhittable right now.

All the Moneyball guys will probably be after him. I'd be shocked if the Red Sox don't break the bank on him especially with Ellsbury probably leaving.
This is the Werth signing that we could use. I would just like to see a decent OBP guy that can truly lead off or bat second. Him behind Villar sounds nice. That being said, he is 31.
Not saying taking Wacha as top pick was a legit option at the time, and correa seems like the real deal....but safe to say the Cards wouldn't trade Wacha for Correa at this point That is the deal with the baseball draft, just so hard to figure who will end up being the best
Wacha everyone knew was a finish product as a two pitch pitcher. I had him Top 5 player out of AM. Problem was Astros were going hitter with a player with bigger upside. Will see how long Wacha keeps it up. He has always been seen as a number 2 in a rotation.
wacha is great. but, getting major production (offensively & defensively) from SS is a serious rarity. Correa was the correct pick.
If Rodon lives up to expectation him being a lefty also makes him a rarity as far as an Lefthander ace... Im more concern about who the Astros going to bring on offense in the long run...
I was going to ask if we would have to give up one. I would say yes. As long as we don't have to give up 1.1 then I'm fine with giving up another one.
I would say no. Unless we can get him to sign something in the 50 million range. But, something like 70-80.. Hell no.
