Why stay with mainstream? The real fun is around the fringes...

Currently reading this for school - short (about 250 pages) and easy to understand for the most part. Huxley does a good job "predicting" the issues we have today.

You summed it up in a word. It -is- badass. It's pure man-smut, action p*rn.

The book is set in a dystopian near-future where the world has been forcefully united into a 'system'. It follows a single character, Avery Cates, and is told in the first person. You don't get any other point of views, which keeps it simple. Avery is a gunner, a street merc for hire, and by the time we meet him, he's built a nice rep for himself at the ripe old age of 27.

The action is almost nonstop and the body count high. Don't get me wrong, it is well written, just not needlessly complicated like so many books these days. The author isn't afraid to kick the hell out of his main character and the world he lives in. I loved it and I promptly gobbled up the four sequels after I finished the first book in a weekend.

Here's the official Avery Cates website

Thumbs up here. Avery Cates is a badass. I've already read the next one in the series.

I just finished this one...it was pretty hardcore.

Sorry for the bump, but I'm planning on getting the The Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy. For anyone who has ever read Terry Brooks, can I just jump right into these books without reading The Original Shannara Trilogy?
