It really makes me mad/frustrated that we wasted Andre and Arian's prime by not being able to keep the team together due to cap reasons and healthy the past couple of years. 2009 - Missed the playoffs by one game while team got on a late season roll (and had a healthy, rested Foster as the feature back) 2010 - Bush, Frank 2011 - finally made playoffs, but lose Schaub to a freak injury 2012 - due to cap problems, had to go at it without DeMeco, Winston, Brisiel, and Dreessen (also known as Year 1 of Andrew Luck) 2013 - due to cap problems, had to let go of TBD. Just goes to show how much goes into putting a team together and danger of not capitalizing when you have a younger, cheaper roster under rookie contracts. I hope they find someway to extend this window a couple of years while the next wave of young talent starts to ascend (i.e. Watt).
I agree with you. It pisses me off to see guys the texans developed, being scooped up by other teams. I understand there is a salary cap and we can't keep all of our guys but it looks like Texans GM Rick Smith needs to take some lessons from Daryl Morey. We're losing too many key guys, not just this year but last year as well. He needs to do some wizard gm type of **** like morey does, manipulate the salary cap, restructure contracts, etc. That is something Rick Smith is clearly lacking as a GM.
The sad part, is I think they have restructured deals at times to get other players done (Andre, Johnathan Joseph, etc.). It's just catching up to them now with so many of their rookie/first contracts coming due: Foster, Brown, Schaub, Cushing, etc. Don't forget Watt is sitting out there in a couple of years and there's no telling what kind of contract he's going to deserve if last year was any indication. I don't 100% absolve Smith of any wrongdoing here, it's just more unfortunate than anything else the timing of it all.
I don't even want to think about the contract he's going to get. It will most likely be the biggest contract for a defensive player in the nfl. Bigger than Mario William's 100 million contract. Hopefully, Watt wont demand to be paid as the highest paid defensive player of all time. He loves houston, he's embraced this city. He seems like the type of guy that would take less money for the good of the team.
If they cut Manning they have 14.5 mil in the bank, and then they can sign our key guys plus a vet that can help this team win. Its a move they should make
Damn that's a lot of money for Casey. Quin is another mid-round pick. Smith is a good GM bc he finds these guys in the first place.
The cash savings vs. the cap savings are two separate items. Manning signed a 4-year, $20MM contract with $9MM guaranteed back in 2011. His signing bonus over the 4 years is $1.5MM per year and his remaining base salaries are $4MM (this year) and $4.5MM (next year). So while we'd save Uncle Bob $8.5MM in salary if we let Manning go, we'd only save $2.5MM (cap number of $5.5MM - $3MM cap hit for his remaining signing bonus) on our cap this year, but we'd have to also account for his replacement, so that makes no sense.
this price makes me less sad about Casey leaving, good luck in Philly (will need it) please come back Quin!

Im am not really seeing any elite AFC teams getting any better. Patriots lose Chung and probably Welker, Ravens lost everybody, Steelers lose Wallace.
that's almost owen daniels cheddar, yo. good for casey for getting paid. I think he will be a nice player. unfortunately, the last memory of him i have is dropping a sure Td. good luck.
I wasn't expecting Casey back, don't really like his game in this offense either. Was hoping we'd bring-in Delanie Walker. Hopefully we sign a guy that does 1 thing really well, makes an impact somewhere, not a generalist.
