The reaction I had when I first heard her singing "Rolling in the Deep", blew me away much like the first time I heard Mariah Carey sing "Vision of Love", Alicia Keys sing "Fallin'", etc. There are voices that are effortlessly powerful, and hers is definitely one.

BTW, it's different, but when someone sent me Carolina Chocolate Drops' cover of Blue Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style", I loved it. Throw a banjo, a fiddle, and a beat-boxer together and it's a country jam... lol. I could listen to this stuff all day. :

She hasn't put out an album in a few years, but Erykah Badu is awesome.

Some of my favorites have already been posted, so I'll add something new.

She was nuts and really looked terrible in the years leading up to her death, but her album Back to Black is one of my favorites of all time.

QUESTION: You guys don't think any of the 'pop-ish' chicks can sing?

Pink - She kind of reminds me of old school Van Halen back when music was fun. Her serious songs are not that bad either.

They can sing, but they can't write good music.

Janelle Monae. She had that one song that had relative success with Big Boi, Tightrope. I have no idea when her next album comes out, her last one being in 2010.

It was a concept album about androids and references the classic sci-fi movie Metropolis among many other related things. Who the hell else will do something as cool as that?

I think the performances on the Jools Holland show are always top-notch.
Here is a female pop(-ish) artist who can definitely sing and write songs.

I guess when I think of pop-ish singers, I really only think of people that one might hear on the radio. Like Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga. I'm sure there are talented female singer/songwriters who make pop or pop-like music.

Adele, Leona Lewis, Beyonce and Alicia Keys.

These four can all sing without music backing them, and still sound amazing.
