I would not have minded if astros did that. I've never heard the "he's blocked in the majors because player x plays his position" for a pitcher.
Chad Jones, who the Astros drafted in the 13th round in 2007, was drafted by the Reds in the 9th round. He spurned the Astros to play football and baseball at LSU.
Round 10, Pick 287: Austin Nicely, LHP, Spotswood HS, Grottoes, Virginia Committed to Virginia. Likely tough sign. Ranked #342 on the BA Top 500. He's a pitchability guy who's projectable, at 6'2", 175.
He was a total badass that got drafted into the NFL but almost lost his leg in a car crash. Crazy awesome story.
Recapping Day 2 for the Astros: 3rd round: Kent Emanuel, LHP, North Carolina 4th round: Conrad Gregor, 1B, Vanderbilt 5th round: Tony Kemp, 2B, Vanderbilt 6th round: Jake Nottingham, C, Redlands HS, Redlands, CA 7th round: James Ramsay, CF, South Florida 8th round: Jason Martin, CF, Orange Lutheran HS, Corona, CA 9th round: Brian Holberton, C, North Carolina 10th round: Austin Nicely, LHP, Spotswood HS, Grottoes, VA Wrapping it up tomorrow at noon with the lightning rounds: 11-40
Nicely sounds intriguing. He certainly fits a need within the system as a lhp with upside. He was ranked 78 overall by Law according to Astros County and has a commitment to Virginia. Have to imagine signing him will cost at least in the upper six-figures. Wonder if they believe they'll have enough money left over to have a realistic shot at an over-slot guy at 11.1 or if they'll just have a backup guy like Virant ended up being last year.

179. Adam Plutko, RHP, UCLA The name sounds so familiar. It's like the Astros selected him in the sixth round of the 2010 MLB Draft and failed to sign him or some such.
not to be rude, but Emanuel has been UNC's Friday night pitcher the last two years. He's hardly been flying under the radar -- he's been nationally prominent. A great pick up for the Astros. I watched him pitch a great game against Rice during the Astros college classic back in March.
Totally agree. Also never heard this at the trade deadline: "we would have loved to make a move, but all we had to deal was pitching and no one was really looking for quality arms"
I would say pitching in mlb is like draft picks in the nba. Everyone can use a draft pick, not everyone can use point guard.
Go home Bud, you're <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">drunk</span> old. <iframe src="http://telly.com/embed.php?guid=S1IZZK&autoplay=0" title="Telly video player " class="twitvid-player" type="text/html" width="530" height="298" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Astros did awesome with first 3 picks as far as pitching. That will give the Astros flexibility during the 2014 mlb draft the Astros hopefully last high draft pick because next season will be much better with Apell leading the way.
