While you were watching Jarred Cosart...

Michael Feliz with another 5 shutout innings in Mahoning Valley. He allowed 5 hits (all singles), walked 1, and struck out 7. Andrew Thurman is currently on to pitch for the ValleyCats, who lead 2-0 in the 7th.

After his 101 steal season, DDJ really quietly has a .388 OBP in Lancaster. Wonder if there are any plans to promote him to AA this year.

I don't believe so. He's batting .290 so he's not exactly dominating the pitching at that level. He'll be 21 next year and at AA which is a good pace.

Anybody else notice that when a prospect gets demoted from the majors back to AAA they initially struggle? Grossman did terrible but he may be finally turning it around. Paredes looks to be off to a slow start back in AAA.

I agree with this. As Delino gets comfortable with A+ in the second half, it'd be nice to see his power come along too.

Yes, the farm system was still playing tonight.

Let's play 2 in Oklahoma City!!!

Short-season teams couldn't get their bats going. But... their pitchers were on.

    Recap

Game 1: New Orleans 9, Oklahoma City 0

Well, that's not a good way to start a series, as the Redhawks were outscored 20-0 in the first 2 games of the series.

Marwin Gonzalez, Jonathan Singleton, and Carlos Perez had 2 hits apiece.

Philip Humber went 2 2/3 innings and gave up 4 on 4 hits and walked 4. Alex Sogard was thrashed in his inning of work, as he gave up 5 runs on 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1. Kevin Chapman stopped the bleeding, as he allowed 3 hits and fanned 4 over 2 1/3 scoreless. And Rhiner Cruz worked around a walk to strike out 2 in a scoreless 7th.

Could the Redhawks show a pulse in game 2?

Game 2: Oklahoma City 5, New Orleans 0

    Yup.

They have truly been a feast-or-famine club as of late...

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Within last 7 games for RedHawks: Pitched 3 shutouts; been shutout 3 times. All I can say is a confused Lil Jon &quot;Okayyy?&quot;</p>&mdash; Alex Freedman (@azfreedman) <a href="https://twitter.com/azfreedman/statuses/355889209363533825">July 13, 2013</a></blockquote>
    <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Jonathan Singleton finally put the Redhawks on the board in the series with a solo shot in the 2nd (2, 7 season). Brandon Laird was 2-3 with a 2-run single in the 3rd. Robbie Grossman and Jose Martinez hit RBI doubles in the 4th and the 5th, respectively. After racking up a hat-trick in game 1, George Springer went 2-3 with a double and a run scored.

Science Guy made a spot start and threw 3 2/3 scoreless, allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3. Jason Stoffel gave up a hit and fanned 3 over 2 1/3 scoreless, and Hector Ambriz pitched a 1-2-3 7th, striking out 1.

Asher Wojciechowski, coming off his magnificent 1-hit shutout of Round Rock on Monday, will start the 4th game in this series, and he'll be opposed by Tom Koehler. First pitch is at 7:05.

Frisco 6, Corpus Christi 3 in 13 innings

Not a very good ending to this extra-inning tilt. Alejandro Selen greeted Kenny Long with a solo blast to lead off the 13th, and then the Roughriders tacked on 2 more to get on the board in this series.

Drew Muren scored the first run of the game on a passed ball in the 3rd. Not long after, Jonathan Meyer hit an RBI single. Enrique Hernandez went 3-5 with a solo homer (8) in the 5th.

Mike Foltynewicz threw 6 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits (7 singles and a double) and fanned 5. Matt Heidenreich threw 3 perfect innings, striking out 1. Jorge De Leon fanned 1 in a 1-2-3 10th. Chia-Jen Lo pitched 2 scoreless, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3. Long had a horror show in the 13th.

The Hooks still have an opportunity to win the series. David Martinez will start in the series finale, and his opponent will be Tyler Tufts. First pitch is at 6:05.

    Lancaster 10, Inland Empire 3

The Jethawks avoided the sweep as they battered the 66ers, jumping out to an 8-2 lead.

M.P. Cokinos demolished Inland Empire's pitching, as he went 4-5 with a double, 2 homers (9), and 3 runs scored. His first homer was a solo shot that led off the 2nd and put the Jethawks on the board. His other homer was of the 2-run variety, and came in the 5th.

Also in the 2nd, Telvin Nash hit an RBI double, and Matt Duffy (14) and Chris Epps (12) hit back-to-back solo homers. Duffy, who went 2-3, also had a 2-run single in the 5th. And in the 7th, Nolan Fontana had a pinch-hit RBI single (for Nash) and Brandon Meredith hit an RBI single as well. Everyone in the lineup had at least 1 hit except for Joe Sclafani, who was 0-4 with a walk and a hat trick.

Aaron West had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 7 hits, walking 1, and striking out 6. Jonas Dufek allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 in 2 scoreless. Travis Ballew worked around a hit and a walk to close it out.

The Jethawks will welcome Modesto to The Hangar for 3 starting at 7:00 Pacific. Brady Rodgers will take on Chris Jensen.

Bowling Green 4, Quad Cities 3

The River Bandits were swept as they dropped their 2nd straight 4-3 game.

They got 2 in the 5th as Dan Gulbransen and Brian Blasik scored on errors. After the Hot Rods got 1 in the 7th to take a 4-2 lead, Carlos Correa hit an RBI single. Jesse Wierzbicki walked to load the bases, but Rio Ruiz struck out to end the threat. Correa finished 2-5.

Chris Devenski, recently demoted to QC, threw 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Juri Perez went 4 innings and gave up a run on 4 hits and struck out 2.

The River Bandits will now welcome the Dayton Dragons for 3 beginning at 7:00. Jordan Jankowski will take on Robert Stephenson, the #2 prospect in the Reds' system. First pitch is at 7:00.

    Tri-City 2, Mahoning Valley 1

The ValleyCats swept the Scrappers, even though they were outhit 9-4, and their two runs came in the 1st. James Ramsay scored on an error, and Ryan Dineen hit an RBI ground-rule double. That was also their only extra-base hit of the evening.

Michael Feliz continues to mow down the NYPL, as he threw 5 more shutout innings. He gave up 5 hits, all singles, walked 1, and punched out 7. Andrew Thurman's lone blunder in his 3 innings was a solo homer to Nelson Rodriguez in the 8th. He allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Andrew Walter worked around a hit and a walk to get the save, striking out 2 in the 9th.

    Dude, this stat is unreal:

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>ValleyCats win 2-1 and sweep MV (17-9). M.Feliz continues great '13 with 5 scoreless IP w/7 K's. Tri-City starters last 34.1 IP=0.26 ERA.</p>&mdash; Matt Appel (@mattappel) <a href="https://twitter.com/mattappel/statuses/355890728603353090">July 13, 2013</a></blockquote>
    <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The ValleyCats will wrap up their roadtrip with 3 games in Batavia. Tri-City's starter is TBA; Randall Fant and Zach Morton started 5 days ago. They'll be opposed by Ryan Newell. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

    Greeneville 2, Princeton 1

The Appy Astros got outhit themselves, this one by a 7-3 margin. HOWEVER, they won the column that matters, and as a result, they won the series.

Their 2 runs came in the 4th on a Brian Holberton groundout and a sac fly from Ariel Ovando. Brett Phillips was 2-4 with a double and Tanner Mathis went 1-3 with a walk. They had all 3 hits, and scored both runs.

Sebastian Kessay threw 3 scoreless and allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Austin Chrismon allowed a solo homer to Elias Torres in the 6th, which was the Appy Rays' only run of the night. Chrismon allowed 3 other hits and fanned 3. Tyler Brunnemann struck out the side in a 1-2-3 7th. And finally, J.D. Osborne closed it out. Although he walked 3 against 1 strikeout in 2 innings, he allowed a hit and most importantly... didn't allow a run.

Greeneville will welcome Elizabethton to Pioneer Park for 3. The Twins swept them in their first home series of the season, so they'll be looking for a measure of revenge. Starters for both teams are TBA. First pitch is at 6:00 Eastern.

    GCL Yankees2 4, GCL Astros 3

The GCLstros blew a 3-0 lead and walked off with the loss.

They got 2 in the 3rd on a Luis Reynoso sac fly and a Tyler White RBI double. White went 3-3 and all 3 of his hits were doubles. He also scored on a wild pitch in the 6th. Mesac Laguna was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Jose Montero threw 5 scoreless and allowed 6 hits and struck out 2. Samil De Los Santos allowed 2 runs on a hit and walked 1 as he got 2 outs in the 6th. Juan Carlos Santos retired all 3 Yankees he faced, striking out 1. Chris Munnelly went 1 2/3 and allowed 2 (1 inherited) on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Erick Gonzalez gave up the winning hit with 1 out in the 9th.

They'll head back to Kissimmee and do it again. First pitch is at 10:00 AM Eastern.

DSL Dodgers 4, DSL Astros 3

The Academy's rally fell just short.

They took the lead on an RBI single from Arturo Michelena in the 4th. Down 4-1 in the 7th, they got an RBI single from Victor Tavarez and an RBI groundout from Alex Melendez. Michelena finished 2-3.

Javier Saucedo went 5 1/3 and gave up 3 runs (2 inherited) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 8. Angel Heredia got the final 2 outs of the 6th, but not before allowing the 2 runners he inherited from Saucedo to score. He also allowed an unearned run of his own on 2 hits and struck out 1. Geronimo Franzua struck out the side in order in the 7th.

The Academy will host the Rays at their complex. First pitch is at 10:30 AM Atlantic.

Folty's heat is impressive live. Fun game..fun ballpark. We talked to a few of the players before the game as my younger son got autographs on a pennant. Max Stassi was super nice and engaging. He told my boys he loved their Astros' hats and hoped to be wearing one just like them one day. I'll post pictures when I get back to Houston.

Glad you and your family had a good time.

Folty appears to be a big part of the Astros future, good to hear first hand accounts.

Loved this pick at the time, I think he is going to move quickly through the system. Very deceptive delivery.

    Saturday Stories

Quad Cities took on one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball.

Chris Cotton is getting the hang of this starting thing.

Extra innings in Corpus again? Sure, why not.

What did Asher Wojciechowski have for an encore, after his dazzling 1-hitter his last time out?

    Recap

New Orleans 4, Oklahoma City 2

Unfortunately, the Redhawks dropped the series as they got Ambrized. The Zephyrs got 2 off of Ambriz to break a 1-1 tie; 1 in the 7th on a solo homer, and 1 in the 8th on a groundout. One of those 2 runs was unearned. Ambriz allowed 3 hits and struck out 2 in those 2 innings.

Asher Wojciechowski went 6 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Josh Zeid allowed a solo homer to Kyle Skipworth in the 9th. He allowed another hit in the inning, but retired the side with no further damage done.

Jose Martinez hit an RBI groundout in the 5th that tied the game at 1. Brandon Laird pulled a run back in the bottom of the 9th with a solo homer (12). Ruben Sosa and Jimmy Paredes both went 2-3.

In the final game before the AAA All-Star break, the Redhawks and Zephyrs will wrap up their series. Wade LeBlanc will take on Doug Mathis at 6:05.

Frisco 4, Corpus Christi 3 in 11 innings

3 of the 4 games in this series went to extra innings. The Hooks lost 2 of them, and this one resulted in them having to settle for a split.

This game was scoreless until Drew Muren hit a 2-run ground-rule double in the 7th. Unfortunately, the Hooks came undone in the 8th, as Pat Urckfitz couldn't help David Martinez escape trouble.

Martinez was excellent in his 7 1/3 innings. He allowed 2 runs, but both of those were inherited runners that scored off Urckfitz. Urckfitz went 1 2/3 and gave up a run of his own on 2 hits before concluding the 8th. However, Jonathan Meyer brought the Hooks back with a solo shot (12) in the bottom of the inning. Jorge De Leon pitched a 1-2-3 10th, but he allowed the eventual game-winning RBI double in the 11th. For De Leon, that was the only hit and the only run he allowed in 2 innings. He also walked 1 and struck out 1.

The Hooks will travel to Midland for 4 games beginning at 6:00. In the series opener, Nick Tropeano will take on Carlos Hernandez.

    Lancaster 10, Modesto 6

    Box score

    Play-by-play

Mike Hauschild is expected to make his Jethawks debut this evening. He'll face Dan Winkler at 5:00 Pacific.

Sorry, got things to do today.

    Dayton 4, Quad Cities 3

Well, a late meltdown condemned the River Bandits to a loss in the series opener. That's their 4th straight loss.

Jordan Jankowski matched Robert Stephenson pitch-for-pitch in this game. Jankowski threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 6. Unfortunately, he did not factor into the decision as Jamaine Cotton and Gerardo Sanchez blew it. Cotton only got 2 outs in the 8th and gave up 3 runs (all inherited) on a hit, walked 2, and struck out 1. Sanchez threw 1 1/3 and not only did he allow all of Cotton's runs to score, he gave up 1 of his own in the 8th. He allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Luis Alvarez gave QC the upper hand as he knocked Stephenson out with a 2-run homer with 2 outs in the 7th (1, 2 season) that broke a scoreless tie. Dan Gulbransen hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to get a run back, but Brian Blasik struck out to end the game.

Mark Appel will make his Quad Cities debut at 5:00. He'll be opposed by Jackson Stephens in game 2 of the series.

    Tri-City 5, Batavia 4

The ValleyCats got 5 perfect innings from Chris Cotton, but they ended up having to hang on for dear life to take the series opener.

Cotton, who never started a game in 4 years at LSU, seems to be getting the hang of it. He struck out 5 in those 5 perfect innings. However, it was on the verge of being for naught as the bullpen was shaaaaaakaaaaaay.

Albert Minnis, despite losing the perfecto, worked around a hit and a walk to retire the side in the 6th, striking out 1. Kyle Westwood had his worst outing yet, as he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 3 in 1 2/3 innings of work. Richard Rodriguez got the final out of the 8th, but he gave up back-to-back solo homers to lead off the 9th, which made it a 1-run game. Pat Christensen allowed a hit, but he was able to end the threat. He struck out 1.

Ernesto Genoves had an RBI groundout in the 2nd that put TC on the board first. Conrad Gregor was 2-4 with an RBI single in the 3rd. Mike Martinez was also 2-4 with an RBI single; his came in the 8th. Also in the 8th, Ronnie Mitchell hit a 2-run homer (2). He, Tony Kemp, and Jon Kemmer also had 2-hit nights.

    Greeneville 2, Elizabethton 1

The Appy Astros got another strong pitching performance, and with the win, they inched closer to the Twins.

Their 2 runs came in the 3rd on a Jack Mayfield RBI single, and he'd score on a Brett Phillips triple, which was the Appy Astros' only extra-base hit. Mayfield finished 2-4.

Enderson Franco threw 6 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Krishawn Holley allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 over 2 scoreless innings. Gonzalo Sanudo threw a 1-2-3 9th to close it out. He struck out 1.

Chris Lee will take on TBA in the middle game of this series. First pitch will take place at 6:00 Eastern.

    GCL Astros 8, GCL Yankees2 7

Payback! After walking off with a loss on Friday, the GCLstros responded with a walk-off of their own. That came in the form of a pop fly that dropped in the infield hit by Yoel Silfa.

Everyone in the lineup had a hit except for Luis De La Rosa, who was 0-3 with a walk, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run. Yonathan Mejia was 2-5 with an RBI single in the 3rd and scored twice. Later in that inning, Mesac Laguna hit a 2-run double. Brett Clements hit an RBI single in the 5th. Mejia scored on an error that allowed Laguna to reach in the 7th, and then Laguna scored on a double from Ydarqui Marte, who scored on an Alex Gonzalez single. Marte and Gonzalez had 3 hits apiece. Jake Nottingham was 2-5 with a run scored, and while GCL numbers are not a reliable barometer of one's future performance, his triple slash line now reads .268/.412/.439. Pretty good for a kid who's barely 18.

Joe Bircher went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9. Lest we forget, he led the Cape Cod League in strikeouts in 2011. Brandon Culbreth gave up an unearned run on a hit, walked 1, and fanned 1 in the 5th. Raul Rivera allowed a 2-run homer to Jorge Alcantara in the 6th. Those were the only 2 runs he allowed in his 2 innings. He gave up 2 other hits, and fanned 2. Zach Dando allowed a run in the 8th. Kevin Ferguson worked around a walk and a hit to retire the 9th, fanning 2.

    The GCLstros have today off.

DSL Astros 3, DSL Rays 0

The Academy is 3 wins away from their win total from last season as they blanked the Rays.

Harold Arauz had a strong outing as he threw 6 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 4. Junior Garcia got the 3-inning save as he gave up a hit and fanned 3.

All 3 of the Academy's runs came in the 4th, as Jean Estrella scored on an error, Randy Cesar grounded into an RBI force out, and Kristian Trompiz hit an RBI double. Estrella finished 2-3.

The Academy will have today off.

Let it be known that Correa has walked 9 times to 2 strikeouts in his last 10 games. I know that Correa is the 10th youngest player in A, but I wonder if there is any desire to move him to A+? He would be the second youngest player if they did, but he seems to be "getting" A. Unless they are looking for him to harness his power, I don't see why he needs to stay down... am I wrong? Or should they just let him go level by level over the course of a year?
