En Fuego I assume they want to get him >100 ABs at the AAA level, but man... if he keeps this up I'm not sure what more he can show.
Wow springer is struggling, he has only hit 1 homerun today. He struck out once but he also has 2 walks. I seriously can't wait till he gets called up, I'm not really worried about his k #s as long as he can still walk at a good rate and hit all these bombs while playing great defense at a premium position.
I know its sarcasm, but this thread is starting to be rife with prospect masturbation. Calm down guys, they're still minor leaguers.
LOL, Tyler Heineman hit homerun #8. This guy hit 0 HR in in over 200 plate appearances last year, and 1 HR in his college career. Also, DeShields picked up 2 more steals to put him at 30, and tying him with Villar for the most in the system.
Hey guys, just saw Springer at McDonald's and..... He just hit a homerun. In all seriousness, kid is the best prospect since "Twinkie power".
Ruiz with a dinger and Correa with 3 walks tonight too. Still waiting for Correa's power to come around, but he's basically turned into an impossible out in the MWL.
Happens in every sport, it's Christmas Eve and you can't wait to unwrap the new shiny toy, and the shiny new toy is the most amazing thing ever until the shine wears off.
Yes.... but in this case, the shiny new toys are in a house (big league club) that's got no roof, walls, or real floors.
It really is exemplified on a club like this. Nothing wrong with bein excited about the newbies that are about to come up.
Ruiz has been showing encouraging signs. 3 HR in last 10 games. Only 5ks in that span. Each month has been better than the last. Would like to see Correa at Lancaster by August.
Didn't Ruiz not play HS ball last year due to that blood clot? I wonder if it was a matter of just getting back into the rhythm of the game.
Tuesday Stories Encore, George Springer! Encore!!! Corpus nearly blows one. Lancaster nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Not Lance McCullers' night. Recap Oklahoma City 7, Round Rock 0 The Redhawks took 2 of 3 from the former AAA team with a show of power. All 7 of the Redhawks' runs were scored off home runs. George Springer did his thing, as he hit his 3rd 2-run homer in 2 days in the 3rd to put OKC on the board first. That was his 7th homer in OKC and 26th of the year. He also walked twice and struck out twice. Well, a 2-run lead is hardly a safe lead... so the Redhawks decided to get some insurance. And... they got plenty of it in the 9th, as Robbie Grossman mashed a 3-run homer (1) and Brandon Laird sent a 2-run homer out (10). Brad Peacock was excellent again, as he held the Express to 2 hits (the only 2 hits they had all game) over 6 shutout innings. He walked 1 and struck out 4. Jason Stoffel threw a 1-2-3 7th. Kevin Chapman got 2 outs in the 8th, walking 1 and striking out 1. Josh Zeid got the final out of the inning, and Alex Sogard finished it with a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1. OKC will now welcome New Orleans to Bricktown for 5 (doubleheader Friday). Jake Buchanan will take on Brian Flynn in the opener. First pitch is at 7:05. Corpus Christi 8, Frisco 7 in 16 innings The Hooks blew a 7-0 lead, but all was forgiven as Erik Castro scored on a passed ball in the 16th to give them the series opener. Castro, way, way back in the 1st, hit a solo homer (11). In the 4th, Max Stassi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and then Jio Mier propmtly cleared them with a double. He would eventually score on a wild pitch from Phil Klein, and then Drew Muren scored on a passed ball. The Hooks had the bases loaded twice in extra innings but failed to convert either of those opportunities. So on two occasions, the game should've been over earlier than 16 innings. That would be all the scoring that the Hooks did in the first 9 innings, as the pitching staff pissed one away. The Roughriders scored 7 unanswered from the 6th to the 9th, and the 9th culminated in Chia-Jen Lo getting welcomed back to the Texas League rather rudely. He allowed an RBI double to Odubel Herrera, and Ryan Strausborger tied it with a 2-run homer. That sent a great Ross Seaton start to the scrap heap. In 6 innings, Seaton allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 2, and fanned 8. Easily his best start in a tough, tough season. Kenny Long allowed 3 runs (1 inherited) on 4 hits in the 7th and the 8th. He allowed both men he faced in the 8th to reach. Andrew Robinson retired the side in the 8th, but not before allowing Long's run to score. He allowed a hit. Lo didn't record an out in the 9th. Pat Urckfitz and Carlos Quevedo restored order to the game. Urckfitz came on for Lo and retired the 9th, then threw 2 more scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out 2. Quevedo threw 4 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and fanning 5. Matt Heidenreich worked around a hit to retire the top of the 16th, striking out 1. Game 2 of this 4-game series features a revitalized R.J. Alaniz on the mound. He hasn't allowed a run in his 2 starts post-tandem. His opponent for Frisco, Neil Ramirez, leads the Texas League with 113 strikeouts. First pitch is at 7:05. Inland Empire 11, Lancaster 8 On the other hand, the Jethawks attempted to come back from a 9-0 deficit, but fell short. Well, any lead is tenuous at best in the California League. Down 9-0 in the 4th, Brandon Meredith finally put the Jethawks on the board with an RBI double. They added 1 in the 5th on a Delino DeShields RBI double. The comeback attempt was in full swing after stretch time, when the Jethawks put up a 5-spot. Meredith (11) and Tyler Heineman (8. Seriously. 8) hit back-to-back solo homers to lead off the 7th, and after Carlos Perdomo walked, Joe Sclafani joined in on the assault with a 2-run homer (6). DeShields then hit a bunt single, stole his way around the bases (30), and scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the comeback was quashed as the 66ers scored 2 in the 9th to take a 4-run lead. The Jethawks got one back, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. DeShields, Sclafani, and Heineman all had 2 hits; Meredith finished 3-5. No one else had a hit. Luis Cruz was demolished in 1 1/3 innings. He gave up 8 (7 earned) on 7 hits (3-run homer) and struck out 2. Blair Walters more or less restored order, as he allowed a run on 5 hits and struck out 1 in 4 2/3 innings. Michael Dimock was doing fine, as he threw 2 scoreless. Then, he aided in the quashing of the comeback by giving up 2 in the 9th. He allowed 5 hits and struck out 3. In the middle game of this series, Tom Shirley will take on Dan Reynolds. First pitch is at 7:00 Pacific. Bowling Green 8, Quad Cities 2 Well, the River Bandits were soundly thrashed in the series opener. When the Hot Rods scored 3 runs by spraying 5 singles off of Lance McCullers in the 2nd, it probably signified that it just wasn't his night. McCullers went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (6 singles and a solo homer, the 1st he's allowed this season), walked 2, and struck out 5. Well, that's not a good sign for the BABIP. Jamaine Cotton allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 2 innings. Dan Minor pitched 1 1/3 and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and fanned 2. Gerardo Sanchez threw 1 2/3 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 2. Austin Elkins and Jordan Scott both went 2-5. Bobby Borchering hit a solo homer (1, 3 season) in the 6th, and Rio Ruiz hit a solo homer in the 8th, his 6th of the season. Carlos Correa was 0-1 with 3 walks. In the middle game of this series, Vince Velasquez will take on Dylan Floro. Luis Cruz's short outing leaves him at 98 strikeouts. Will Velasquez (93 in 81 innings) be able to take the lead and be the first pitcher in the system to 100 strikeouts? First pitch is at 7:00. Tri-City and Mahoning Valley was postponed Doubleheader beginning at 6:05 Eastern. Adrian Houser will face Dace Kime in game 1, and Tanner Bushue will face TBA in game 2. Princeton 10, Greeneville 4 Greeneville dropped the opener to the Appalachian League's worst team. Well, the good news was that only 4 of those 10 runs were unearned. Problem was... Greeneville pitchers walked 7, and yeah 10 runs is still 10 runs. Jandel Gustave only lasted 2 2/3 innings, and he allowed 5 runs (1 earned, 1 inherited) on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1. Krishawn Holley pitched 2 1/3 and allowed a run (his first ER of the season) on 3 hits, walked 1, and fanned 3. Ryan Connolly went 1 2/3 and gave up 3 (1 earned) on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Finally, Gerardo Ramirez allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1 in 1 1/3. The Appy Astros got 2 in the 4th thanks to an RBI single from Ricky Gingras, and an error on the play allowed Ariel Ovando to score as well. Gingras then hit a 2-run homer (1) in the 6th. Tanner Mathis was 3-3 with a walk. The middle game of the series pits Frederick Tiburcio against Jacob Faria. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern. GCL Astros 9, GCL Tigers 6 The Astros busted out for 4 in the bottom of the 6th to turn a 6-5 deficit into the final score. Trailing 3-0 in the 2nd, Jean Carlos Batista led off the inning with a triple, and he would come around to score on a single from Jake Nottingham. Nottingham would make his way around the bases on a sac bunt and a groundout, and then he scored on a single hit by Ydarqui Marte. Jose Solano hit a 3-run homer in the 4th (1) to give the GCLstros the lead. Solano scored on a wild pitch in the 6th, and then after Luis Reynoso drew a walk, he scored on a Yonathan Mejia double. Mejia would come home on a single from Tyler White, who scored on another Batista triple. Batista went 3-5 with 2 runs scored. Francis Ramirez went 2 2/3 and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Troy Scribner pitched 4 1/3 and allowed his first 2 earned runs of the season on a 2-run homer from Drew Longley in the 6th. He allowed 2 other hits and struck out 4. Kevin Ferguson struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 8th, and Chris Munnelly struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th for the save, his first as a pro. Scribner, an NDFA from Sacred Heart, currently has a 20-1 K-BB ratio in 14.1 innings. The GCLstros will head to Lakeland to face the Tigers there at noon Eastern. DSL Astros and DSL Royals was postponed As Tropical Storm Chantal battered the Dominican with heavy rain. Chantal may have weakened, but the heavy rain threat still persists, and that could possibly put the rest of the week's games in jeopardy.
Correa only has 1 K in that span and 8 BBs. I know it is only Low A, but I am excited for the future. With Correa, Fontana, Scalafini, Deshields, Altuve, and Villar, I think there is very good ideas that Astros are strong up the middle in the future. Ruiz seems to be the only 3B prospect besides Correa (who I hope can be a MLB SS).
For anyone on twitter, Nathaniel Stoltz (@stoltz_baseball) writes for Beyond The Box Score and goes to tons of minor league games in the Appy League and Sally League. He's going to the Greeneville Astros game against the Princeton Rays tonight, and he usually tweets out a ton of prospect observations from each game he goes to. May be worth a follow for one night.
