2013 Astros Minor League Thread

Strong point. I haven't read much on his fielding, but I would be curious to see if he projects better at second or center. The one thing that really gets me excited about him is the ability to be a true lead off type hitter. He strikes out at a clip that would be slightly more than you want but it is balanced out so well with his ability to draw the walk. I just remember what Bourn was able to do, and it just impacted the offense so much when he was in rhythm (granted that was a different team with different struggles).

That being said, I wonder if it becomes more of a "who fetches more" deal with him and Altuve if he projects at second still. Also, depending on the development of Santana or the possibility of a FA signing in right, I could see Springer moved over there to allow DDS to play center. I agree, though, still that DDS would be a highly coveted piece if he continues down his current path.

That '04 Beltran run was just too damn impressive. It is also worth noting that Mike Lamb knocked in over 50 runs as well while splitting time at third and other positions... though he was a terrible fielder if memory serves correctly. I will take '04.

I like DDS, it'd be nice to see his power potential finally come around.

 

I wonder, though, how crucial is it? If focusing on power takes away from the contact and ability to get on base, I think I would rather see him stay a great lead off type. But then again, I have no idea if one diminishes the other for him in his approach.

 

On both teams you listed, Biggio, Bagwell, Kent all past their primes. Beltran hit a ton of HR's for us in the regular season with a low average... and he was only there for 90 games.

Take a look at the 2001 team. Pound-for-pound, Berkman's best year ever. Alou also right there with one of his best year ever. It was the last of Bagwell's HOF-type years. And Biggio, despite coming off the ACL, had his last above average offensive year. Vinny Castilla played 122 games and had his best year in over 5 years (and best ever away from Colorado). Hidalgo was a "dissapointment" after 2000, and still had a .811 OPS.

2003 team actually had one of Lance's worst years as an Astros (Which was still an awesome .923 OPS), had one of Hidalgo's best years (back on the juice, I guess). Ensberg busted out. Bagwell/Kent were solid (but not what they used to be).

Its closer than I thought between the 2001 and 2003 teams... but I'd still take the 2001 bunch. Hell, any lineup that doesn't have an Everett-Ausmus-waypastprime Biggio combo is going to eventually win.

 

Also I said since 2001.

To me, the 1998 Astros is the best lineup they've ever had... mainly because it was the only year they had two HOF players playing at their full HOF level (Bags and Biggio), along with Alou's best year ever (till he got injured).

 

Past their primes and still pretty freaking good. Those guys were awesome.

98 was definitely the best lineup. I was just saying it would be hard to top the offenses all the way through 2004. I miss the good days.

 

Is it wrong that I still get kind of excited when I see The Great Billy Spiers name written out?

 

Short lived promotion for Hallock. He has bounced around like nobody ever has for one organization. He probably should get hurt and make a rehab start in the GCL just for good measure, and then be a September callup.

If it is then I don't want to be right. Still one of my favorite players of all time. Would have won the 2005 World Series if we had him. Don't ask me why...we just would have.
