So, can anyone explain exactly how the service time rules work. When it comes to guys like Singleton/Springer, is there any difference in bringing them up now as opposed to August or September, when it comes to arbitration/free agency years?
No Astros on this list, but the 'no current service time' rules should apply to all of their top prospects: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/service-time-considerations-for-top-prospects.html
Hopefully not a repost ... Jack Armstrong nowhere near taking the field After undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2012, Armstrong was rehabbing this spring when he tore the labrum in his pitching shoulder, and underwent a second surgery last week. Armstrong will be out until Spring Training 2014, when he'll maybe start his professional career at age 24.
Was looking through my old baseball cards the other day, and discovered I have one of his dad's cards.
Tuesday Stories More dramatics in Davenport! Let's play 2 in Vermont! Asher Wojciechowski all over the place. Did his free passes come back to bite him in the rear? It appears that the tandem system has ended at the A clubs. Recap Oklahoma City 4, Albuquerque 3 Redhawks got even in the series thanks to 2 runs in the 5th. The bullpen was solid and was able to hang on to that lead. Asher Wojciechowski was rather liberal in issuing free passes, but the damage that was done to him was largely limited. Wojo threw 6 innings and allowed 3 runs (all on a bases-clearing double in the 1st) on 3 hits, walked 6, and struck out 5. So despite all those walks, he managed to throw a bare minimum quality start. Science Guy allowed 2 hits as he got 2 outs in the 7th. Jose Valdez allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 1 1/3, and Josh Zeid worked around a hit to close it out, fanning 1. Albuquerque jumped on Wojo right out of the gate, but the Redhawks got 4 unanswered, thanks to 2 RBI singles from George Springer and Jonathan Singleton in the 1st. Brandon Laird hit an RBI double in the 5th to tie the game at 3, and then a Springer groundout gave them the lead. Laird and Jose Martinez had 2 hits apiece. Jonathan Villar was 1-3 with a walk, a steal (28), and 2 runs scored. Wade LeBlanc will start the series finale; he'll be taking on Blake Johnson. First pitch is at 7:05. Corpus Christi was off They will begin a 3-game series in Springfield starting at 7:09. R.J. Alaniz will take on Anthony Ferrara. Lancaster 12, Bakersfield 1 The Jethawks with another wire-to-wire win. It's the 24th time in 83 games in which they've scored at least 10 runs. In 13 games in the 2nd half, they've done it 7 times. This game also heralded the end of the tandem system in Lancaster. Tyson Perez became the first Jethawks starter to go past the 5th inning this season. He threw what was easily the best start of the year, as he went 6 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits and walked 1. Cam Lamb threw 2 perfect innings, striking out 1, and Michael Dimock finished with a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1. The Jethawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead and were never threatened in this game. Andrew Aplin's RBI groundout in the 1st brought home Delino DeShields for the 1st run of the game. Then, M.P. Cokinos hit an RBI double to send Nolan Fontana home. Deshields and Fontana hit 2-run doubles in the 2nd. They both went 2-3 with 2 walks and their 2-run doubles. DeShields outscored Fontana 3-2, while Fontana had 3 RBI to DeShields' 2. Joe Sclafani hit an RBI single in the 5th. Cokinos finished 2-5; his 2nd hit was a 2-run single in the 6th. Aplin also scored in the inning on a double play ball hit by Sclafani. Fontana drew a walk with the bases loaded in the 7th and Aplin followed with a sac fly. Perez pitching into the 6th probably heralded the end of the tandem system in Lancaster. Tonight, David Rollins will get the start as the Jethawks look for the sweep. He'll take on Mike Dennhardt at 7:00 Pacific. Quad Cities 7, Clinton 6 The River Bandits have won the first 4 games of this series, the last 2 in walkoff fashion. This one was rather unusual. Here's the winning play, according to MiLB.com's play-by-play. Jordan Scott grounds into a force out, center fielder Jabari Henry to third baseman Jordy Lara. Austin Elkins scores. Brett Phillips out at 3rd. Teoscar Hernandez to 2nd. Jordan Scott to 1st. Yeah. I don't get it either. Steve Batterson, who covers the River Bandits for the Quad City Times, was there, and he was stumped too.

Bizarre ending at Modern Woodmen. Juri Perez and John Neely picked him up with an excellent job out of the bullpen. Perez threw 3 1/3 scoreless, and he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Neely allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 in 2 innings. Teoscar Hernandez scored on a double play in the 1st for QC's first run. Then, Clinton started to pound them. Down 6-1 in the 4th, the River Bandits began their comeback in earnest. Roberto Peña hit a 2-run double in the 4th, and the in the 5th, Jesse Wierzbicki hit a 2-run homer (6) to make it a 1-run game. Austin Elkins tied it in the 6th with a sac fly. It would stay tied at 6 until those shenanigans in the 9th. The River was 2-4 with a double and scored twice; he was the tying run. Jordan Scott was 2-5 with a double and the game-winning.... whatever the hell that was. Carlos Correa had last night off. I'm assuming that X-rays were negative (also going out on a limb here and say that X-rays are SOP), which is great news. He served as the first base coach. Peña continues to live up to his reputation as a defensive ace. He caught all 3 LumberKings trying to steal off him last night.

#qctimes @QCRiverBandits Roberto Pena throws out 3 LumberKings attempting to steal. First pitch is at 6:00. Game 1: Vermont 2, Tri-City 1 3 of the ValleyCats' 4 hits in this game were doubles. Tony Kemp, Dan Gulbransen, and Ronnie Mitchell had 1. Mitchell scored on a Ryan Dineen groundout in the 5th. Kyle Westwood had a very nice start. Unfortunately for him, he had to take the loss. He went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned, both on a 2-run homer from B.J. Boyd in the 1st) on 2 hits and struck out 4. Albert Minnis allowed a hit, but retired the side in the 6th. What was in store for game 2? Game 2: Tri-City 2, Vermont 1 This time, TC was on the right end of a 2-1 game. Chris Cotton marked his pro debut by starting this game off with 2 1-2-3 innings. He struck out 1. Andrew Walter pitched the next 4 innings, and the only hit he allowed was a solo homer to Boyd in the 4th. He fanned 2. Pat Christensen struck out the 7th to record the save. Luis Alvarez was 2-3 with 2 doubles and a run scored. Jon Kemmer had an RBI groundout in the 4th, and Adam Nelubowich got his first pro hit and RBI, with a single. The series finale pits Zach Morton up against Gregory Paulino. They're currently in a rain delay. Greeneville was off They'll play 1 game in Kingsport, for some reason. Starters for both teams are TBA. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern. Clarification: Appy Astros tells me that they'll also play one game (outside of a proper series) with them in August. Every team in the league is playing 1 against each other today. GCL Astros and GCL Phillies were rained out again They'll play 2 doubleheaders. In a row! This will occur on July 17 and 18. The threat of rain is expected to persist for the rest of the week. Their game with the Yankees' 1st GCL team has been suspended with 1 out in the 3rd. They're currently leading 1-0. DSL Astros 4, DSL Athletics 1 in 7 innings Rain ended this one early. Good timing, as the Academy broke a 1-1 tie with 3 in the top of the 7th. Jarico Reynoso hit a solo homer (1) in the 3rd. That was the Academy's only run until the 7th, when Hector Roa hit an RBI triple. He'd score on a Randy Cesar single. Cesar would eventually score himself, on a single from Dariel Aquino. Aquino and Brian Peña went 2-3. Juan Hernandez allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2. Junior Garcia threw 3 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 2, and striking out 1. Juan Delis threw a scoreless 6th, allowing a hit and striking out 1. The Academy has a game with the A's today at their place. Whether it was rained out remains to be seen.
Today's transactions: Brett Phillips sent to Greeneville from Quad Cities Jean Carlos Batista begins rehab assignment with the GCL Astros. He had been listed on the Quad Cities roster. Chase McDonald has been assigned to Greeneville. Joe Musgrove was activated from the 7-Day DL for the GCL Astros.
I want to see this man in the lead off spot soon. Why not? Elmore is nice... but I just want to see Villar sink or swim.

When news broke that the tandem system in Corpus was ending, R.J. Alaniz might've been the most excited pitcher on the roster. He's just thrown 7 shutout innings in Springfield. He allowed 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Corpus leads 1-0 heading into the 8th.
