SS tends to be a deep position among top prospects. Somebody was going to get snubbed from the World team (ultimately Javier Baez was). The top 4 eligible SS prospects were all World roster players.
Again? Ugh.... Steve Batterson (@sbatt79): #qctimes Carlos Correa exits tonight's game for @QCRiverBandits after being struck in the right forearm/hand by a pitch in the third inning.
Springer is striking out a lot, but having an impact when he makes contact. He launched his 2nd AAA homer today (and got his 2nd AAA steal). He also walked twice. In 17 ABs, he has 6 hits (3 XBHs) and 7 Ks. Defenses must be bored. I think he's the only 20/20 guy in all of pro baseball still. DeShields showing positive signs as well. In the 7th inning, he walked, and then proceeded to steal 2nd and 3rd, making 22 steals on the year.
I think it was Baseball Prospectus that said that while Springer has a lot of swing and miss in his game, he is still able to consistent hard contact. June 2nd: Position Prospect of the Day: George Springer, CF, Astros (Double-A Corpus Christi): 3-5, 2B, HR, 3 R, 5 RBI. Springer shows all the tools. The hit tool was the one that scouts question, and he seems to be making consistent hard contact despite having a lot of swing and miss in his swing. I like Springer; he will be the everyday center fielder for the Astros in the near future; .310/.417/.640 with 14 2B and 17 HR in 197 at-bats. http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1329&nav=messages&webtag=ml-astros&tid=87063
Monday Stories A teams rally. Did they result in wins, though? Carlos Correa plunked again. Corpus offense DOA. Let's play 2 in Burlington, North Carolina! Recap Albuquerque 6, Oklahoma City 4 The Redhawks were able to make this a 1-run game in the 7th, but they couldn't muster up anything else to either tie or win. Brandon Laird (9) and George Springer (2, 21 season) hit back-to-back solo homers with 2 outs in the 5th. Also in the inning, Che-Hsuan Lin tied the game at 3 with an RBI single. Laird finished 2-4. Jonathan Singleton also finished 2-4 after an RBI single in the 7th. Robbie Grossman, who has been slumping horrendously, had 2 hits himself. He's coming off a June in which he hit .167/.283/.229. Hangover from being optioned to OKC? Springer's homer was his only hit, but he also walked twice, stole a base (2, 25), and scored twice. Jarred Cosart pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 7. Kevin Chapman was responsible for untying the game in the 6th, as he allowed 2 (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Jason Stoffel allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 1 in 2 innings. And finally, Josh Zeid struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th. Asher Wojciechowski will take on former Astros farmhand Rob Rasmussen in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05. Tulsa 3, Corpus Christi 0 The Hooks finished this absolutely wretched series by being held to 2 hits. They scored a grand total of 1 run as they got swept. Singles from Erik Castro and Jonathan Meyer were the only hits. Bobby Doran threw 5 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Kenny Long allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 2 in the 6th. Andrew Robinson struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 7th, Carlos Quevedo tossed a 1-2-3 8th, and Pat Urckfitz worked around a hit to retire the side in the 9th, striking out 1. The Hooks get a day off to try and regroup and find out what the hell went wrong. Then, they hit the road to face Springfield in a 3-game series beginning on Wednesday. Lancaster 9, Bakersfield 5 The Jethawks rallied from a 5-3 deficit to rally for a win in the series opener. Trailing 4-0, Brandon Meredith homered for the 2nd straight game (8) in the 4th. It was a 3-run shot that made it a 1-run game. The comeback began in earnest in the 7th inning, when Delino DeShields drew a 1-out walk, and then stole his way to 3rd. Nolan Fontana walked, and then Andrew Aplin hit a double to send DeShields home and moved Fontana to 3rd. A groundout from M.P. Cokinos tied the game at 5, and then an RBI single from Telvin Nash put the Jethawks in front. They got 2 more in the 8th as Chris Epps scored on a wild pitch and DeShields hit an RBI single. DeShields finished 2-4 with a run scored and 3 steals (23). Meredith joined him in having a 2-4 night. Chris Devenski wasn't very good in his 3 2/3 innings. He allowed 4 runs on 8 hits (2 homers) and struck out 5. On the bright side, he did not issue a walk. T.J. Geith went 1 1/3 and allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1. Brady Rodgers snapped a personal 4-game losing streak by firing 4 scoreless. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 2 to get his first win since June 1. Tyson Perez and David Rollins will take on James Allen in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:00 Pacific. Quad Cities 9, Clinton 8 The River Bandits won the series and avenged Carlos Correa, who was hit in the hand for the 2nd time in the span of a week. He was plunked by Matt Anderson in the 3rd. Now there's rumblings that he may have broken a bone in his hand. Will try to find out more. That cast a deep pall over the game, even as QC erased a 6-2 deficit after the 5th. That also wreaked havoc on the lineup, as they had to shuffle people around to account for #1's absence. Jobduan Morales entered to play 1B and Jesse Wierzbicki moved to 2B, which moved Austin Elkins to SS. After falling behind 6-2 after the 5th, Quad Cities went on a 7-2 run to close it out. The comeback was capped by a Teoscar Hernandez sac fly in the bottom of the 9th. He also hit an RBI single in the 4th. Jesse Wierzbicki drove in the Bandits' first run on a double in the 3rd. Brett Phillips was 3-5 with a double and 2 RBI; the double drove in 1 in the 6th. Jordan Scott had an RBI groundout in the inning. Brian Blasik hit a sac fly in the 7th and Roberto Peña scored on an error after a Phillips single. After a brief lull in the 8th, Austin Elkins hit an RBI single in the 9th to restart the rally. Phillips got his RBI single which tied it, and Hernandez won it. Elkins was 2-3 with a double, 2 walks, and 3 runs scored. Peña was 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Scott was also 2-5, with one of those hits being a double. Colton Cain went 3 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Jamaine Cotton tagged in for 3 1/3, and he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits (solo homer) and walked 1. Mitch Lambson finished with 2 2/3 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 2, and fanning 3. Game 4 of this series features Lance McCullers and Juri Perez taking on Scott DeCecco. First pitch is at 7:00. Tri-City and Vermont was rained out Doubleheader scheduled for tonight. Game 1 is at 6:05 Eastern and will feature Zach Morton against Brent Powers. In game 2, Kyle Westwood will take on Jose Torres. Game 1: Greeneville 7, Burlington 0 An absolute whitewashing. The Appy Astros got 3 in the 2nd and the 7th and filled the gap with 1 in the 5th. Bobby Borchering hit a 1-out double in the 2nd and scored on a single from Ariel Ovando. Jack Mayfield hit a 2-run double in the inning. Alfredo Gonzalez scored on a double play in the 5th. Ovando homered (2) to lead off the 7th, and later, Juan Santana and Darwin Rivera hit RBI singles. Marc Wik was 2-4 with a run scored. Both of Borchering's hits were doubles. Both of Ovando's hits resulted in RBIs, and in addition to his 2-run double, Mayfield walked twice. Gonzalez stole a base too (3). Edison Frias threw 6 shutout innings and allowed 3 hits and fanned 5. Christian Garcia pitched a 1-2-3 7th, striking out 1. Game 2: Greeneville 8, Burlington 1 With the doubleheader and series sweep, Greeneville has now won 6 in a row. They buried the Royals with 6 in the 4th. Tanner Mathis and Juan Santana scored on a multi-error play in the 1st; Mathis was stealing 2nd; the throw got away and into center field, and the throw from there was well offline as well. Speaking of Santana, he went 2-4 with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored in the nightcap. The 2 RBI came on the double in the 4th. Borchering also had 2 hits in game 2; he led off the 4th with a homer (1) and brought in the final run of the inning on a groundout. Ariel Ovando had 2 hits of his own, hitting a double in the 4th inning and scoring on an Angel Ibañez single. Ibañez had a perfect game 2, going 3-3 with a walk and a run scored. He'd score on an error after Parker Hipp had singled. Enderson Franco pitched 5 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Ryan Connolly allowed 3 hits in the 6th, but was able to work out of trouble, striking out 1. And Gonzalo Sanudo finished it out, allowing a hit and fanning 1 in the 7th. Now, for some reason, the Appy Astros will make a stop in Kingsport for 1 game. They have an actual series there starting on Sunday. Starters for this game are TBD, but Chris Lee was slated to start one of the games in Burlington, so we could see him in action tonight. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern. GCL Astros and GCL Phillies were rained out Doubleheader today in Clearwater. Time TBD. DSL Astros 12, DSL Indians 1 After trailing 1-0 after the 2nd, the Academy moved into blowout mode. All 12 of the Academy's runs were driven in and were unanswered. For all that, though, the one home run belonged to Hector Roa (4). It was a 2-run shot in the 7th. Randy Cesar hit an RBI single in the 3rd to tie the game, and then the floodgates more or less opened. Marlon Avea beat out an RBI infield single, and then Jean Estrella hit a 2-run double. They got 3 more in the 5th on another Avea RBI single and a 2-run single from Luis Payano. Cesar hit an RBI double in the 6th and Jean Carlos Cortorreal followed that up with a sac fly. Roa hit the homer in the 7th, and Jarico Reynoso hit an RBI single in the 9th. Payano and Cesar had 3 hits apiece, as did Alex Melendez, who's off to a stellar start to his career. He doubled, drew a walk, and scored 3 times. Elieser Hernandez went 4 innings and the 1 hit he allowed was a solo homer to Francisco Miguel in the 2nd. He walked 4 and struck out 5. Rayderson Chevalier pitched 3 scoreless, walking 1 and fanning 2. Robert Corniel allowed a hit in a scoreless 8th, and Cristhopher Santamaria threw a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1. The Academy will now travel to the Athletics' complex.
I just dont think Cosart will amount to much. His control issues are too concerning to be effective in the "SHOW".
Right...because 23 year olds are usually already at their peak and won't ever be able to make adjustments or figure things out.

Walk rates and age in their last minor league season 4.1 Roy Halladay 21 4.3 Cliff Lee 24 5.0 Johan Santana 23 5.0 Gio Gonzalez 23 4.0 Barry Zito 22 Too bad none of these guys were able to figure out their control issues and turn into decent big leaguers
Lee and Halladay have led the league in fewest walks per 9 several times. I would never have guessed they had that high of walk rates in the minors.
