Recap

Oklahoma City 5, Nashville 3

Brandon Laird has Brett Wallace's spot in the crosshairs. Laird went 2-4 with a 2-run double in the 1st to open the scoring in this one, and his 2nd double of the evening came in the 8th and brought Jonathan Villar home, giving the Redhawks a 4-3 lead. Trevor Crowe was 2-3 with an RBI single in the 2nd. Jake Elmore was also 2-3 with an RBI single; his came in the 8th for OKC's final run.

The Redhawks walked 4 times and fanned 8 times. Their BB:K ratio currently stands at 27:37.

Ross Seaton, in his first AAA action of the season, got his 5 innings in and allowed a run on 6 hits (solo homer by Caleb Gindl) and struck out 4. Lyles went 3 2/3 and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and fanned 1. Kevin Chapman got the save by retiring the only batter he faced, Gindl, to end the game.

Corpus Christi 6, Tulsa 0

Sweep! Big nights from Jio Mier and Domingo Santana at the plate, while Bobby Doran and Nick Tropeano spun a TCG.

The Hooks offense drilled Tulsa to the tune of 13 hits. Austin Wates and George Springer both went 2-5 with a double and scored twice. Wates had a steal (3) and Springer had an RBI single in the 1st for the Hooks' 1st run of the game. Mier went 3-3 with a solo shot (1) in the 3rd and added a sac fly in the 6th. Enrique Hernandez had his 3rd straight game with an RBI, as he went 2-4 with an RBI double in the 5th. Domingo Santana busted out, going 3-4 with 3 doubles. The 2 that resulted in RBIs came in the 1st and the 3rd.

Hooks batters walked 5 times and struck out 5 times. Their BB:K currently stands at 26:49.

Bobby Doran threw a gem in his 5 innings, holding the Drillers to 1 hit and striking out 4. He threw 62 pitches (41 strikes). Nick Tropeano finished the remaining 4 for the TCG-SO. He allowed 5 hits and struck out 6, throwing 62 pitches (46 strikes).

Lancaster 13, Lake Elsinore 8

Lake Elsinore got things started by jumping Alex Gillingham with 2 runs in the top of the 1st, but Gillingham quickly settled down and quieted the Storm. He got through 5, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 2, and striking out 3. Mike Foltynewicz tagged in and had his tough start to the season continue. In 2 1/3, he allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 2 inherited) on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Blair Walters came on and got the final 2 outs of the 8th, allowing both of the runners he inherited from Foltynewicz to score on one hit, which wasn't a homer. Travis Ballew finished it out, allowing a run on a hit (not a homer) and striking out 1.

Everyone had at least 1 hit in this game except for Andrew Aplin, who went 0-4 with a walk and 3 runs scored. Odd line. Tyler Heineman also went hitless, but he also scored a run. Big night for Zach Johnson, as he went 5-5 (homer shy of the cycle) with a double, a triple, and 4 RBI. He cleared the bases with the triple in the 6th and had an RBI single in the 3rd. The bottom of the order wreaked havoc, as Matt Duffy went 3-5 with a 2-run homer (1) in the 7th and scored 3 runs, while Drew Muren was 2-4 with an RBI double in the 3rd and also scored 3 times. Nolan Fontana had a sac fly in the 3rd and cleared the bases with a double in the 4th. Preston Tucker had an RBI double in the 8th, and one batter later, Brandon Meredith added a sac fly.

The Jethawks walked 4 times and whiffed 6 times. Their BB:K for the season stands at 19:33.

Burlington 6, Quad Cities 4

The River Bandits fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as Michael Bolaski's 2-run double off Lance McCullers in the 8th broke a 4-4 tie. Dan Minor got the start this time around, and the good news: he allowed 4 hits. The bad news was that 3 of them were homers and he allowed 4 runs, all of which came from those 3 home runs. Oh, he also struck out 5. McCullers went 2 1/3 and allowed 2 runs (1 earned, both came off the double) on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Mitch Lambson got the last 2 outs of the 8th, walking 1 and striking out 1.

Chase Davidson had a double and an RBI forceout in the 1st. Jesse Wierzbicki was the only River Bandit with a multi-hit game, as he went 2-4 with an RBI single in the 3rd. Roberto Peña had an RBI sac bunt, also coming in the 3rd. Ryan Dineen had an RBI sac bunt of his own in the 7th. I'm not sure if either of those were suicide squeezes since I didn't listen to the game. Carlos Correa was 1-2 with 3 walks, a strikeout, and a run scored.

The River Bandits walked 8 times and struck out 11 times. Their BB:K ratio is now 34:61.

Three Stars

3.

Jio Mier, SS, Corpus Christi
3-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, BB

Nolan Fontana's still on his ass. Mier is fending him off very well, though. A healthy season will certainly help his future prospects.

2.

[IMG] [IMG]

Bobby Doran and Nick Tropeano, Ps, Corpus Christi

Doran: W (1-0), 5 IP, H, 4 K
Tropeano: Save (1), 4 IP, 5 H, 6 K

These two are dueling with Vince Velasquez and Joe Bircher for the title of best tandem in the system at the moment. I think this outing has given them the edge over the QC pair.

1.

Zach Johnson, 1B, Lancaster
5-5, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, R

Congrats to Zach Johnson for being a "Really Good Player"!#5-5Guy twitter.com/MorganEnsberg/…
— Morgan Ensberg (@MorganEnsberg) April 10, 2013

Honorable Mentions

Drew Muren, OF, Lancaster: Was a solid player across 3 levels last season. This late bloomer might be putting everything together.

Matt Duffy, 3B, Lancaster: He's probably had the second-hottest start to the season for the Jethawks aside from Nolan Fontana.

Brandon Laird, 3B, Oklahoma City: Last straw with Brett Wallace.

Domingo Santana, RF, Corpus Christi: Three Stars-worthy performance with his 3 doubles, but Mier, Doran, and Tropeano upstaged him, IMO. Still, a huge game from him after a bit of a lull.

George Springer, CF, Corpus Christi: Starting to heat up....

Austin Wates, LF, Corpus Christi: Obviously he lacks the star power of his pals in the outfield. However, he and/or Robbie Grossman can complement them very well.

Jake Elmore, 2B, Oklahoma City: Would rather see him in Houston than Ronny Cedeño, to be honest.

Giving up the game-winning hit lands you here, Lance McCullers. I still love you though.

Looking Ahead

Jarred Cosart's new partner will be Wes Musick. They'll team up for OKC as they take on Nashville at 7:05. The Sounds will go with Hiram Burgos.

Corpus will be traveling today. On Thursday, they'll begin a 3-game series in Springfield.

Lancaster will look for the 2-game sweep of Lake Elsinore at 7 Pacific. Chris Devenski will get the start, with Brady Rodgers tagging in. They'll be opposed by Colin Rea.

Quad Cities and Burlington will wrap up their series at 6:30. Mike Hauschild will start for the River Bandits this time, while Colton Cain will piggyback. Opposing them for the Bees is Ryan Crowley.

Folty is really the only major guy besides Villar off to a rough start. It looks like he is struggling with command and Lancaster, as we all know, is hell for a pitcher. Hopefully he can get it together in the next few starts. He's still got a lot of time and supposedly hit 100 in his first start. 5 ip, 12 hits, 7 bb, 7 so

I hope Fontana can keep up the good work. He's out to an even more torrid pace than last year and he crashed hard by the end of the season. His BA last year was over .400 for a while but finished in the .220's.

If Fontana can keep up the high OBP I would love to see a future lineup of -

1. DDJ - 2nd
2. Fontana - SS
3. Singleton - 1st
4. Springer - CF
5. Correa - 3rd

Or possible put DDJ in the outfield with Fontana at 2nd.

Not sure if any of y'all play MLB The Show, but these guys were created by a group that make official rosters including about 90% of the minor league rosters that you can download and play with in the game. I've just started playing with these guys and it is pretty fun. Much more interesting than playing with our current major leaguers, that's for sure.

The Chron's Randy Harvey interviews Delino DeShields and Mike Foltynewicz (subscription required, so here's Harvey's tweet with the link).

Following prospects as closely as I can this season. Many thought that both Foltynewicz and DeShields would start off in Corpus. Instead, they find themselves in Lancaster, and taking this assignment in stride. Though DeShields sounds surprised, I don't believe that there's any bitterness in his words.

Though DeShields' path to Houston is blocked by Jose Altuve, he's willing to play another position in order to contribute in Houston. Also, there are no plans to move him off 2B.

Lancaster manager Rodney Linares thinks that Foltynewicz has ace upside.

Bill Brown reported earlier in the game that Jeff Luhnow mentioned that Max Stassi (minor league catcher we received in the Lowrie trade) caught four innings today in Florida (EST) and should start playing full time next week, there was no mention of where he would go. Before he was hurt, he was in Hi-A with the A's.

You don't really expect Keith Law to say anything good about an Astros prospect, do you?

If Nitro was in the Red Sox, Yankee or Dodgers system, he'd be a potential ToR pitcher with a floor of a MoR.

Wednesday Stories

A postponement made the slate a little lighter.

What has gotten into Nolan Fontana????

Recap

Oklahoma City 3, Nashville 1

Jarred Cosart had a solid outing as he threw 5 shutout innings, allowing a hit, walking 3, and striking out 7. It took him 76 pitches (45 strikes) to get through 5 innings, and he induced 6 groundouts and 1 flyout. Wes Musick tossed 3 innings as the piggybacker and he allowed a solo homer from Dayton Buller in the 8th. That was the only hit he allowed in his outing, and he also walked 1 and fanned 4. Jose Valdez shut the door with a 1-2-3 9th, his 2nd save of the season.

Che-Hsuan Lin scored the first run of the game on a passed ball in the 3rd. Jimmy Paredes hit a 2-run home run (1) in the 4th for the only Redhawks RBIs. Jake Elmore had a double.

The Redhawks drew 5 walks and struck out 8 times. Their BB:K ratio is now 32:45.

Corpus had an off day

They're set to begin a 3-game series in Springfield tomorrow night at 7:10. OK, first pitch is actually scheduled for 7:09. David Martinez and Asher Wojciechowski will face Scott McGregor.

Lancaster 7, Lake Elsinore 5

Nolan Fontana has just come out of the gate guns blazing. He went 3-5 with an RBI single in the 2nd and led off the 4th with a solo homer (2). Matt "Don't Call Me Lance Berkman" Duffy had a solo shot of his own (3) in the 3rd for his 2nd in as many nights. He currently has an RBI in every game this season. Brandon Meredith was 2-3 with a triple in the 3rd and an RBI double in the 4th. Zach Johnson had an RBI double in the 1st for the first run of the game, after Andrew Aplin tripled. Tyler Heineman had an RBI groundout in the 3rd that brought Meredith home.

Chris Devenski had a good outing, as he went 5 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 3. Brady Rodgers was knocked around in his 3 1/3 innings of work; he allowed 4 runs (1 inherited) on 7 hits (2 homers) and struck out 4. Travis Ballew came on and inherited a bases-loaded situation. He gave up a sac fly for the 2nd out then struck out Cory Spangenberg to end the game and get the save (2).

The Jethawks had 7 walks while striking out 8 times. They now have 26 walks as a team, compared to 41 strikeouts.

Quad Cities and Burlington was postponed

Rained out. According to the link, it will be made up in QC as part of both teams' final series before the Midwest League All-Star break.

He got robbed of the "Really Good Player" award, to be honest. Shocking that he didn't draw a walk.

Jarred Cosart, P, Oklahoma City
W (1-0), 5 IP, H, 3 BB, 7 K

Is this the year where Jarred Cosart finally has a breakthrough?

Honorable Mentions

Jimmy Paredes, 3B/OF, Oklahoma City: Currently in MLB/AAA purgatory. Making the most of it though.

Matt Duffy, 3B, Lancaster: Torrid start continues.

Goat

Well, everyone gets a free pass tonight. Even Brady Rodgers and his subpar outing.

Looking Ahead

OKC and Nashville will wrap up their series at 7:05. Brett Oberholtzer will face Johnny Hellweg. Oberholtzer is without a partner as John Ely was placed on the DL yesterday. Jose Martinez also joined Ely on the shelf.

See above for Corpus.

In a rematch of last year's California League Championship Series, Lancaster travels to Modesto to begin a 4-game series. The team of David Rollins and Tyson Perez will take on Ben Alsup. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities will be playing at home for the first time in the 2013 season, as they welcome the Peoria Chiefs to their home, Modern Woodmen Park, which was originally built in 1931. Yeah, it's one of the oldest They'll be building a Ferris wheel! As for the game, Mike Hauschild and Colton Cain will be teaming up to take on Kurt Heyer. First pitch is at 7.

Nolan Fontana deserves as many accolades as he's getting. He's just beasting out there.

According to the MILB.com Class A Advanced stats:
Fontana is
4th overall in batting average at .476.
3rd overall in runs with 8
Tied for 2nd overall with teammate Preston Tucker with 9 RBI's

That's among all three Class HiA leagues. SSS but he's making a statement. It boggles my mind how he never hit over .289 in 3 years at Florida .

Austin Wates led off the game with a homer, and now he's just hit an RBI triple to give Corpus a 2-0 lead in Springfield in the top of the 5th.

Thursday Stories

Another light slate due to weather.

The teams that did play, though, got dominating pitching performances.

Recap

OKC and Nashville was postponed

Rained out. This game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on June 28, which was supposed to be game 2 of a 4-game set. But as a result of this game becoming part of a doubleheader, that series is now 5 games.

The Redhawks will return home to begin a homestand, and they'll welcome Memphis to Bricktown tonight at 7:05. Brett Oberholtzer, who was scheduled to go against Nashville, will be the starter against the Redbirds. He'll go up against Seth Maness. Oberholtzer will not have a partner. However, Lance Day was summoned from extended spring training tp fill the void caused by John Ely's injury. Day spent part of 2012 in independent ball with Grand Prairie (American Association) before jumping on board with Tri-City. He went 6-1 with 2.73 ERA in 11 games (8 starts) with the ValleyCats last year.

To jump from EST all the way to the doorstep of the majors is a quantum leap. But, according to WTHB, the move makes sense from a continuity standpoint.

Corpus Christi 5, Springfield 0

Austin Wates led off the game with a home run and that was the beginning of a big night from him. He went 3-4, finishing a double shy of the cycle, and added an RBI triple in the 5th. After Wates' triple, Jio Mier sent him home with a double. Mier also drew a bases-loaded walk in the 6th for the Hooks' 5th and final run. Before the walk, Domingo Santana led off the 6th with a homer, his 2nd of the season. Michael Burgess went 2-5; both of his hits were doubles. Undoubtedly, the lowlight of the night was George Springer and his golden sombrero.

David Martinez and Asher Wojciechowski combined for a 3-hit shutout. Martinez started and went 5, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and fanning 3. Wojo finished off the TCG, and he allowed a hit, walked 3, and struck out 4. I believe one or two of his fastballs hit 97 in this outing.

The Hooks drew 5 walks, but they struck out 14 times. Erik Castro and Jonathan Meyer both had hat tricks. This year, they've walked 31 times and struck out 63 times.

Matt Heidenreich and R.J. Alaniz will be tonight's pairing. They'll take on Anthony Ferrara in the middle game of this series. First pitch is at 7:09.

Lancaster 5, Modesto 1

Lancaster is now off to a 6-1 start. After Modesto took a 1-0 lead after the 1st, it was all Jethawks from there.

Everyone had a hit except for Raoul Torrez and Andrew Aplin. Also, much of the damage came from the bottom of the order. Rafael Valenzuela's 2nd-inning RBI double tied the game, then Matt Duffy gave the Jethawks the lead with his 3rd-inning RBI single. In addition to having an RBI in every game so far, Duffy scored on a balk in the 8th and was plunked twice in this game. Last year with Lexington, he was hit by a pitch 41 times. Preston Tucker went 2-4 with a double; on that play, Zach Johnson was thrown out at home and it wasn't even close. Drew Muren was 2-4 with an RBI groundout in the 5th and scored twice. M.P. Cokinos was also 2-4; he had an RBI single in the 8th.

The Jethawks walked 3 times and fanned 8 times. Nolan Fontana drew none of those walks. So, their BB:K ratio is now 29:49.

David Rollins got the start, and the run that scored on him was unearned. He allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Tyson Perez came on and instantly shut the door, striking out 4 in 4 perfect innings. I think I might have an idea of who the "Really Good Player" Player of the Game is.

Game 2 of this series pits the team of Luis Cruz and Aaron West up against Dan Winkler. First pitch of that game will be at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities and Peoria was postponed

Again, rain washed out this game, which would've been the River Bandits' home opener. Instead, the postponed game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 11. So, the home opener has been moved to 7 PM tonight. Mike Hauschild and Colton Cain will be pitching against Kurt Heyer.

Three Stars

Austin Wates, LF, Corpus Christi
3-4, 3B, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 R

The knock on Wates was that he didn't draw enough walks. Well, he's leading the way with 7 in the early going.

2.

David Rollins and Tyson Perez, Ps, Lancaster

Rollins: W(2-0), 5 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 4 K
Perez: Save (1), 4 IP, 4 K

Wow. Tough decision. I gave the edge to Martinez/Wojo since they had the shutout.

Rollins has really been a pleasant surprise since coming over in the Happ/Lyon deal. I think he could supplant Brett Oberholtzer as the best lefthanded starter in the system.

Perez struck out the side in order in the 6th and that basically set the tone for his outing.

1.

David Martinez and Asher Wojciechowski, Ps, Corpus Christi

Martinez: W(1-0), 5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K
Wojciechowski: Save (1), 4 IP, H, 3 BB, 4 K

OK, I admit that the walks were probably the worst part of their outings. But that's just picking nits at this point.

Martinez got some payback on the CAArdinals this time around after they roughed him up a bit in his first appearance of the season.

Wojo dominated Springfield the last time he faced them... other than the walks, it was more of the same. He's allowed 32 hits in 53 2/3 innings in Corpus: 30 in 43 2/3 in 2012, and 2 through his first 9 innings.

Honorable Mentions

Domingo Santana, RF, Corpus Christi: Apparently he's adept at tearing a baseball apart. Oh, he's also drawn 6 walks so far, which is good for 2nd on the Hooks.

Matt Duffy, 3B, Lancaster: He's well on his way to defending his Craig Biggio award. He can hit a bit, too.

Jio Mier, SS, Corpus Christi: I think Mier's starting to show something with the bat. He's always been able to draw walks; how he does with the bat this season will be crucial.

I love you, George Springer, but I don't love it when you deliver a golden sombrero.

Dishonorable mentions go out to Jonathan Meyer and Erik Castro for hat tricks. Castro is currently exhibiting signs of the Jon Gaston Effect.
