Wexler made it sound like we've offered his asking price and it's all in German's court. Is today the deadline for all signings?
And the Stros have ~1.6M in their bonus pool to play with before any penalties kick in. It'll come down to whether German wants to go to college or not. Very tough decision for a kid.

For the same dollar amount reported since day 1. Wonder which side took the hard line? Wish he was already playing. I guess he'll go to the GCL. Seeing Tellez sign makes me really wish we had drafted him. Could have afforded him with the money we have left.

Really not cool to be left holding over a million dollars. Not sure if that's Jim Crane being cheap or Mike Elias miscalculating his first draft though. Oh well.

1st Round: Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford (SR); signed for $6.35 million ($1,440,400 under slot recommendation) Do the math. Looks like they presumed Mark Appel would be a slot sign.
He's not being cheap. They went into the penalty last year. This year they must not have seen the player there that they wanted that they felt was legitimately able to sign. No sense in offering $1M to a guy you think is worth $100K.
I doubt the assumed that, but they probably did feel they had more uncertainty in this draft than the last. Still could throw that money at any undrafted player if they choose too. I don't think the team budgets to use the 5% overage penalty. I think they prefer to use it purely as a buffer.
Well, good luck with your senior seasons, Dillon Newman, James Farris, and Nate Thornhill. Good luck at Cal, Alex Schick, and good luck at UCLA, Scott Burke. Let's try this again in 3 years? And good luck at Virginia, Daniel Pinero. See you in 2015???
My guess is that they had a tentative understanding of what Appel would sign for prior to the draft. Even if they did not, they still could have had other contingency plans in case additional money opened up. For instance, they could have drafted someone like Tellez, Ryan Boldt, or Wil Crowe, instead of the likely org college players (or Kacy Clemens) they drafted in the 20s and 30s. They apparently like Crowe enough to offer him 1.2 million at pick 10.1. They could have pick him with one of the 20th round picks and put together a package close to his demands.
We could have drafted one more top talent in the first 10. Oh well, I like the haul we got. It has provided a ton of depth for the system and allows for Luhnow to look solely for top talent in trades.
