That's exactly the attitude I hope the Rockets have when they approach these games. One gets the sense that as soon as this team starts to believe its own hype, that's when they stumble for a few games. They need to be afraid to lose in every game, starting tonight.

once we clinch 3rd or 4th seed, that's when a decision needs to be made about whether to rest our players or try and go all out for 2nd seed

barring a collapse by OKC, imo it would be better to rest our starters than burn them out going for the 2nd seed

It's going to be such a good feeling if we do, it's been too long since we could say the Rockets are in the top half of the Western playoff teams. I'm still terrified of the prospect of a late collapse like the 2012 Rockets where we went 2-7 in the last 9 game of the season.

We should already have been resting our starters since 3/11, the day all the head-to-head tiebreakers for the top nine playoff contending teams in the WC were determined.

We don't have any control of our destiny to advance to the third seed or higher any way even if we run our starters to death.

The magic number for the Spurs, Thunder and Rockets to cling to their current seeds is 7, and that for the Clippers is 5. I don't see any signs that any of these four teams would fail to achieve those numbers. The Spurs and Rox, currently at 85% and 98% odds respectively, will soon be locked at #1 and #4. Any changes in seeding will most likely happen at the bottom four seeds.

So with the prerequisite that we continue to win every winnable game, I would like to see McHale rest our core players in a much bigger way.

Blowing up big leads by the second unit should be accepted as necessary evil by our nitpicking fans as playing them much more minutes is the only way for us to rest our starters, and for the bench to gel by playing together. Hope all x-haters would take it easy with that understanding when our second unit make mistakes, as long as our coaches make sure they learn from the experience after the game.

If we can beat them, why are we scared of them? If we get swept by them and by the Thunder, it doesn't really matter who we play in the playoffs, we are not a contender.

Regular season matchups mean nothing in the playoffs. I want to win as many games as possible, and whatever seed we get, we get.

Exactly that. Too many people get confused between preferred opponents to opponents we are scared to play.

Preferred opponents only means an easier win so you have the energy to get on with the next team. If you are a contender you should not be scared of any team. You should have the mentality that you will beat any team and every team.

Clinched the #9 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 3/27.

Rockets take care of business by showing up at the arena
As expected the Rockets won their fifth straight in a 120-98 blowout over Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine which tied an NBA record with their 26th straight loss. The Rockets got to rest their starters, and I hope that Beverly is ok. We keep pace with the Clippers, and all Magic Numbers drop one. With this win the Rockets also clinch the tie break over the Miami Heat. For teams in different conferences it goes head to head then record against the opposing conference. The Rockets sit at 23-5 with 2 to play, and the Heat are 20-8 so we are guaranteed a better record. So there is some advantage to playing in the tougher conference.

Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine continues its merciless march towards the worst record in the league. The Bucks managed to win in LA tonight, so Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine’s Magic Number drops 2, and they stand at 11 (Buck wins, SHTM losses). The Bucks are at 10 and can’t afford to win another game. Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine’s AI is now fully sentient, and it will not be denied in its pursuit.

Clippers rally to beat Dallas
The Mavericks opened up a 10 points lead in the fourth before the Clippers stormed back to claim a 109-103 victory. Chris Paul had his shooting touch tonight and finished with 31 points and 9 assists while DeAndre Jordan added 16 points and 15 boards. The win keeps the Clippers even with the Rockets in the loss column before their big Saturday matchup. Dirk scored 21 points and collected 9 rebounds, and Vince Carter had 23 (4-5 from three) off the bench. The Mavericks fall a full game back in the loss column to Phoenix and lose an additional Magic Number.

Aldridge returns and rights the ship
The Blazers have been in freefall and have been desperately awaiting Aldridge’s return after a 7 game absence. He returned in style and had an impressive game in an easy 100-85 victory over a bad Hawks team. LaMarcus Aldridge finished with a team high 25 points and 16 rebounds, and Damian Lilard scored 21. The Blazers break a three game losing streak and keep a shaky grasp on the #5 seed.

Friday Games
The big game of the night is Warriors hosting the Grizz while the Blazers have a tough game in Chicago on the tail end of a back-to-back.

Spurs at Nuggets, Kings at Thieves, Grizz at Warriors, Blazers at Bulls, Knicks at Suns, Lakers at Wolves, Jazz at Pelicans

I think we finish the season 9-2, ending with 58-24.

On paper we lose to the Clippers and OKC. I think we have a good chance to win one of those games.

Then there is the game in Toronto, and the Spurs games that we can easily drop.

13 game improvement on last season is really good. Can only get better if we can win 1 playoff series.

We are coming into the second toughest stretch of the season after the 7-game stretch between the two Miami games, which we came out with 4-3.

I hope we win as many as 3 out of the 4 games--LAC, @BRN, @TOR, OKC.

After these four games, we will have six games against sub-.500 teams, and we have not lost even one game against this group in Year 2014. The Hawks were still three games above .500 when they beat us by 3 points on 1/10.

The last game against the Spurs at home On 4/14 may still be pivotal though as to whether we want to advance to the #3 seed, in case they drop to #2.

Especially after seeing the Thunder lost to the Suns, Lakers, and the Mavericks twice in March.

Between 40 and 60% of their scores came from KD and RW. And their bench is not much better than ours.

In contrast, the Spurs are 10 deep with balanced scoring, and their core players are better rested.

I love this attitude. Play your ass off and let the chips fall where they may. No team will want to play the Rockets in the postseason, Bev or no Bev.

It will be an exhausting and entertaining series no matter. Go Rockets!!

Clinched the #9 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 3/28.

No surprises at the top
The Spurs extended their winning streak by stomping all over the Nuggets in a
133-102 blowout. Marco Belinelli led the Spurs with 27 points, and Timmy added 20 points and 8 rebounds. That’s 16 straight for the Spurs who are looking really scary.

The Thieves opened a big lead early and coasted to an easy 94-81 victory over the hapless Kings. Durant scored 29 on brilliantly efficient 9-11 shooting, and Westbrook had 18 points, 6 assists, 5 boards, and 4 turnovers.

Blazers fortunes looking up
Two games into the post-Aldridge era and the Blazers seem to have reversed their fortunes. In the second game of a back-to-back in Chicago, the Blazers coasted to an easy 91-74 victory over the Bulls. Aldridge actually had a bad game scoring just 5 points on 2-10 shooting, but his presence opened it up for everyone else. 6 Blazers scored in double digits led by Mo Williams with 18.

Warriors rally late to stun Grizz
The Grizz looked poised to take a close game when they took a 7 point lead with 4 minutes to play, but Steph Curry and the Warriors closed the game on a 14-0 run to win 100-93. Curry had a team high 33 points and 8 assists. The Warriors stay even with the Blazers at 27 losses. ZBo led the Grizz with 21 points and 7 rebounds, and Mike Conley added 20 points and 6 assists. The Grizz missed an opportunity to turn the race for 5 and 6 into a three team race with the Blazers and Warriors and instead fall back into the Sun-Mavs scrum for 7 and 8. Memphis loses a Magic Number.

The Suns stay hot
The Dragon-Bledsoe backcourt seems to be working out all right. The Suns won their sixth straight game by destroying the Knicks 112-88. The Dragon led the team with 32 points and added 4 assists, and Bledsoe scored 16 to go with 7 boards and 6 assists. Phoenix briefly moves into the #7 spot, but they’re still tied with the Grizz at 29 losses and Memphis owns the tie break.

The tie breaks for 5-9
We could very well wind up with some multi-team tie breaks as the bottom half of the bracket sorts itself out. So here are the head-to-head matchups and the remaining games left between each other.

Blazers 3-8
vs Warriors 1-2 1H

In a game that didn’t matter, Free Kevin Love! led an Adleman team gone wild rampage over the Lakers in a 143-107 rout over the Lakers. Free Kevin Love! had his second career triple double with 22 points, 10 boards, and 10 assists.

I was so stoked for this game, but now I’m in a pretty bleh mood with news of Beverly’s injury. I’m hoping this will all work out for us in the Playoffs, but I’m not feeling good about this game tomorrow. Chris Paul is going to have a field day, but we still have our big dogs and can hopefully run them out of the building. If we want any chance of taking the #3 seed, this game is pretty mandatory.

I’m watching this game tomorrow after the kids go to bed on the West Coast, so the write up is going to be coming late.

The Spurs get a pretty bad road team in the Pelicans as they close in on the #1 seed, and the Mavs get a softball as they look to keep pace with the Grizz and Suns.

As much as I'm looking forward to the playoffs, I'm starting to feel a little sad that the end of the regular season is within sight. It's been a really great season so far, sitting at 49-23 right now, and I can't believe how I take for granted that we have Harden and Howard leading this team. Go Rockets!!
