I think we have 4 votes for elephants

Whatever we pick, let's do it soon. I want to get whatever book tomorrow if I don't have it yet.

Re-read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I have not read it since I was in high school and I've been meaning to ever since I finished Hochschild's Leopold's Ghost in 2010. Still a great piece of literature. I read a few other Conrad short stories that were in this collection and they were also excellent. Conrad's vocabulary is stunning, but he writes in a style that is still easy to read. I keep thinking he's like Dickens, only with good plots and better sentence structure (A Tale of Two Cities excluded).

I'm also about halfway through with Nine Lives: Mystery, Magic, Death, and Life in New Orleans. It's superb. One of the best books I've read in a while, and a great look at New Orleans. I've read a lot about New Orleans but this, while not waxing historical or overly philosophical, really nails the feel of the city and the culture.

I finished Infinite Jest. I highly recommend it; its extremely well written and has a lot going on in it. However, understand that the first chapter is the last chapter so when you read it the first time you are basically going to say "WTF is going on here"

When you go back and re-read Chapter 1, after you finish the book, it actually adds closure - sort of. The timeline is jacked up.

Still, a great book about drugs, tennis, rehab, family dysfunction, paraplegic assassins, and the most dangerous movie ever.

Now I need to read something shallow and goofy. Ball Four awaits.

Do you have the latest version of Ball Four? The only one I have read is the original and I will be reading (listening) the newest version in the near future. A lot of good old Astros' stuff in that book.

Aurora: CV-01. Has a Star Trek kinda feel to it. So far, I like it. Even if it's a little predictable :).

Right click on the picture. Depending on what browser you are using, either choose 'Copy Image URL', or go down to properties and copy the link to your clipboard. Then back to your post, click on the picture icon and paste the link inside of the box. Then submit your reply and the pic should be there.

Or, alternatively, you could not leech images, upload whatever picture you want to share to a free image hosting site (I use photobucket) and then use the link generated there to share the picture here.

I just finished the The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Would highly recommend, especially if you're in to science and medicine. It's nonfiction, but it reads like a novel.

Yeah I just bought it off Amazon, it has 4+ updates...looking forward to reading about Dierk as a weird rookie and Mantle looking up skirts.

I found infinite jest annoying to read. I've never seen more run on sentences in my life. Way too wordy for me. I don't need 25 adjectives in once sentence.

    OMFG!

I am so freaking going to this!

    http://www.thirdplacebooks.com/event/carlos-ruiz-zafon-conversation-garth-stein

Garth Stein leading a panel as they interview Carlos Ruiz Zafon and discuss his writing in a small venue bookstore? This is one of the most awesome reading events I could imagine. Two authors representing two of my top three novels of all time, one of whom I just had dinner with. The only downside is that the event is only one day after The Prisoner of Heaven is released. I guess I'll have to pull an all-nighter to finish it up before the big event.

Scribo, looking forward to hearing about it. Does that new book have any relation to his other books or is it a stand alone?

Finished Water for Elephants last night...trying to figure out what I want to read next. So many options that I have spent all day trying to decide...Im just as clueless now as I was in the morning.

It's the direct sequel to Shadows of the Wind, although it's the third in the series. The second book, The Angel's Game, was a prequel and set 20-30 years before Shadow of the Wind.

I'm going to read Water for Elephants before diving into Zafon's books.

As much as I hate when people use this line in this thread, I can't read books right now because I'm spending all of time catching up on Morey's trade wizardry. Hopefully all of this leadup will play off for a great ending. I wouldn't at all be surprised by a couple of crazy twists. This is some fun drama!
