Can't be mad at that. I guess this is it for any hopes of signing Virant and/or Hinojosa. Still a pretty good draft, overall.
Having the 1st overall pick (plus a supplemental 1st sandwich round pick) plays a factor, but we've already spent double last year's bonuses.
Surprised they went over slot for him. I don't think Fontana would have gotten close to that if he went back for his senior year.
https://twitter.com/zacharylevine/status/217714991904722944 Fast tracked. Too bad for Chan-Jong Moon.
This organization is rolling in Shortstops at the moment Jed Lowrie Marwin Gonzalez 23 Jonathan Villar 21 Corpus Christi .840 OPS Over last 40 games Jiovanni Mier 21 Lancaster .861 OPS Alex Todd 22 Lancaster .784 OPS Chan Moon 21 Lexington .785 OPS Carlos Correa Nolan Fontana All of the shortstops were having good years, I'm all for taking best player available, but its seems a wave of position changes is coming. Hard to believe they've given up on Mier and Villar.
Yeah, Moon seemed to be putting things together. Wonder if Deshields stays in Lexington the rest of the year to get a glimpse at that double play pairing?
Fontana is a super utility type. Todd is nobody. I'm interested in what they will do about Villar/Mier going into next year.
Not anything unexpected, but glad to hear Crane and Co. don't mind spending on the farm.

GM Luhnow admits Astros likely will pay draft tax by going over pool. I thought Villar would be the SS of the future...that is until we traded for Lowrie to be the SS of the present and selected Correa to be the SS of the future. Mier has no chance to stick with the organization IMO.
With the Fontana signing done, and assuming they can get Tucker to sign with only a nominal bonus, and adding in the extra 5% over slot allowance Luhnow is willing to go, how much can the Astros offer either Virant or Hinojosa right now?
Less than $600k, most likely less than $500k. Luhnow already said he expects to go over the draft pool amount just signing the top 11 and the overpool 5% amount is about $500k. Whatever's left + $100k is what he can offer to Virant or Hinojosa.
Assuming slot bonuses for Tucker and a Heineman: $434,585 is the most we could offer any one pick. Tucker may sign for less, but don't expect us to have more than $500k to use.
As expected at this point, Cj Hinojosa is going to University of Texas.. @Cj_Hinojosa: I still have dreams to be lived but I'm about to put those on hold to join the #BurntOrange&White! Can't wait to start the #Grind! #RTO For some reason I can't embed at work - https://twitter.com/Cj_Hinojosa/status/218440631251505152
A little late on this, but the Arizona League (the GCL equivalent for teams that have spring training in Arizona) is a hitter's paradise. Think California League, but even rawer players. Right now, 26 guys there have an OPS of over 1.000. The GCL, by comparison, has 6 players with a 1.000+ OPS.
