Nope moneyball 101 would be the bluejays signing a player for 1,000 saying he "told them he would sign for a hotdog"

Where did you read that we signed Brett Phillips? Are you basing it off the article that he declined his scholarship? I don't see his name on those Astros Press Releases

He said as much here, not just that he declined the scholarship but that he would be signing within the next few days. The list is titled "Updated list of signings/potential signings..." which is why I am guessing he is being included.

I don't know if I'm reading too much into it, or if I'm misinterpreting something, but it looks as if Phillips has expressed a desire to sign.

I am sure he is going to sign, I just thought you meant it was announced he would sign. Looks like he is going to sign, idk what is holding him up since it sounds like they agreed on a number before drafting him- to get him to slip to 6th round

This is normal. In fact, some other teams have reached agreements with players in the 6-10 rounds where the bonus is in the under-10k range. There are tons of crappy players in the top 10 rounds of the draft as teams want to maximize room for signing top talents. That's why when round 11 started teams went back to drafting higher level talents.

The Astros aren't doing anything mind-boggling. It only seems that way because our past two regimes have been so backward.

Blue jay signed one of their picks for 1K. Teams easily found a way to get around the rules. The only "mind boggling" thing I could see is saving 2.4 mil with Correa, that alone could help us sign McCullers, Ruiz, Phillips, and hopefully Virant/Hinojosa

Not really. None of the top players this year are worth their slotted value. And teams at the top has the leverage in negotiations because slotted values go down at a steep rate. For example, the Pirates has less than half of the Astros slotted value so Appel will be getting less money from the Pirates than Correa despite Correa's underslotting. In other words, if the Astros liked Appel more but Boras played hardball, he ended up costing his player $1-2mil because of that.

If there was a Strausburg or Harper in this draft, then the Astros could not have done this. Because then said player would tell the Astros to shove it and re-enter the draft next year with a team that would pay them full slotted amount.

I was just saying that that could be the only "mind boggling" thing, I'm not saying I was surprised by it

Well the Astros took big risks in taking McCullers in the supp. and Ruiz in the fourth. Both are first round talents and tough signs so we are risking losing there slot amount if we can't sign them. While other teams were busy drafting older college guys who didn't have as much leverage and were easy signs allowing them to have more for rounds 11 and on when they wouldn't lose slot for not signing picks.

McCullers, Ruiz, Virant. All three of these guys I'm certain would have been taken in the 11th round. Hopefully with Correa savings we can nab them all.

    Ask, and you shall receive.

More on Jankowski apparently being voted off the team

Also, Travis Ballew will be a Tri-City ValleyCat.

Considering of the remaining first 10 rounds of picks, 3 are still in the CWS and can't be signed and the other two are Boras represented high school clients, Luhnow's doing pretty good so far. Hopefully the high school kids (besides Phillips) start signing on the dotted line soon.
