Dude, have you seen our GM? He has black glasses and carries BALLS in his hands! Do Not underestimate our Darth Lord.
Tough HS signs 1s. RHP Lance McCullers Jr. (Florida) (top 10 in round one talent) 4. 3B Rio Ruiz (USC) (top 10 in round one talent) 6. OF Brett Phillips (NC State) (round four talent) 11. LHP Hunter Virant (UCLA) (end of round one talent) 26. SS C.J. Hinojosa (Texas) (top 10 in round one talent) 39. RHP Mitchell Traver (TCU) (round one talent) On the three early-round HS picks, 1-41 Lance McCullers, 4-129 Rio Ruiz, and 11-339 Hunter Virant, Bobby Heck says: "We'll be challenged, but we feel confident we'll be able to sign them. I think the biggest thing is we view them as first-round talent." I am finding it hard to believe that the Astros have enough scratch to get either Hinojosa or Traver. Maybe Plan B, if Virant does not sign.
2012 Draft Preview -- Hunter Virant Baseball America has Virant ranked #53 in their top 500 list. Keith Law has Virant ranked #26 on his list. John Sickels has Virant ranked #44 on his top 100 list. Frankie Piliere has Virant ranked #39 on his top 100 list. Virant has a commitment to UCLA, and the consensus seems to be that if he doesn't go by the end of the supplemental first round -- or get paid an amount consistent with that level of pick -- he will pitch at UCLA, where he potentially would join Lucas Giolito, another UCLA commit who is viewed as a tough sign. 2012 MLB Draft Slot Values Pick #26 - $1,700,000 Pick #39 - $1,324,800 Pick #44 - $1,165,800 Pick #53 - $954,800 Pick #60 - $857,200 (end of the supplemental first round) If the consensus is correct, Virant should sign for $857,200.

Was that a response to me? Lol I hope he can sign him but I just don't think 1.8 mil is reasonable. We have correa for 4.8, McCullers would most likely take 2.4, and Ruiz would get around 1.5 mil. We still have to sign Fontana, we don't know how much Rodgers got, Phillips might get a but overslot, I doubt we afford 1.8mil. The most I see him getting is around 1 million
On Cj Hinojosa's Twitter, talking to Lance McCullers...

@LMcCullers_23 can't wait man! Very pleased with the potential this draft class has. Maybe the Rockets should take some advice from the current Stros management (Luhnow) on how to rebuild. Granted the situations are different, but I currently have more faith in the Astros future than the Rockets. Good on one side, but so sad on the other...
i just beat you to it. loving the updates in this thread...good job by everyone here! it's much appreciated!
Apples and ****ing big ass oranges. Morey loves the idea of player development. Why do you think he sends players to the D-league? If Morey had 40 draft picks every year and could get them in the minor league, he'd do just as good a job.
On the flip side of that, if the Rockets were commited to rebulding... and had as horrible a season as the Astros had and ended up with the #1 pick... it would certainly help turn around their future fortunes just as the Astros feel its turned around theirs. There's no doubt Morey could develop/find diamonds in the rough just as well as anybody... but having the #1 pick (or any high draft pick) goes a loong way in the NBA... much more so than any other sport.
Of course, in one league a team has a 100% chance to get the #1 pick if they have the worst record whereas the other, the team with the worst record only has a 25% chance.
Faceplam. People just need to stop trying to compare GMs from different sports. The NBA is the hardest League to draft and develop players in. 2 rounds and a 15 man roster.
