That will most likely free up cash for McCullers and Ruiz, and we might be able to make a run at Virant, too. The talent that the Astros are getting in this draft is almost unfair.

lulz, I knew they would pick him. Zero chance of signing I assume, which would explain taking him in the 11th.

Isn't it weird how things turn out.... we're all down since there's no undisputed #1, and now, the front office is masterfully orchestrating this draft.

Using the $5M number, that leaves an additional $2.2M to spread around. I think we could find another $500k from some of the collegiate picks. If Crane will bite the bullet, we could potentially have another $550k (potential $3.2M to go around to the HS players). It will be an exciting 6 weeks until the deadline to find out who is staying.

    Brad Ausmus alma mater...

Numbers are down significantly this year (wood bats?)

Those darn BBCORs.... although it didn't seem to affect him last season.

While I agree with every bit of what you said, still....we could only do what other teams allowed us to. Except for the #1, teams passed over the picks we made.

In contrast, Morey gets blamed for not doing enough where in that scenario, there haven't been many opportunities to do anything (worthwhile).

Love the thinking with these picks. There's certainly a decent chance they lose at least one of McCullers, Ruiz or Virant - but they should have SOOO much money (relatively speaking) left over from the 1-1 bonus slot that they can get 2 of those guys to sign. If anything, the Virant pick was a no-brainer in that it gave the Astros a pick worthy of giving all that over-slot bonus money if they lose McCullers and/or Ruiz.

Even if all 3 go to college, I still think Luhnow, Heck and the gang have done a masterful job under the new draft rules.

I thought it was 3 years. Is that just for high scoolers?

With the last pick of Day 2, at #488, the Phillies pick Zach Cooper, a RHP from Central Michigan.

See you tomorrow for the final day of the MLB Draft. Rounds 16-40.

    JUCO players are eligible regardless.

4-year college players are eligible when they turn 21, or if they completed their junior season.

So if someone is drafted out of HS, but doesn't sign, they have to wait basically 3 years/complete junior season to be draft eligible again UNLESS they go JUCO? That's where I was confused.

Yup. If they don't get drafted where they want, or don't like the money offered, they go to college for three years and build their stock (not including juco players).
