I'm gonna be on the road at 4:30 in the morning, so I'll just give you an abridged recap. No Three Stars (you guys are free to decide who gets the honors), no Goat (you can decide that, too). OKC got trounced by New Orleans 6-1. The Redhawks were never really in this one. Scott Moore had an RBI double in the 4th, and that was the only offense for OKC. Aneury Rodriguez allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (3-run homer) in 5 innings, walking 4 and striking out 4. Corpus jumped out to an 8-0 lead against Midland after the 4th, then the wheels were loosening as they allowed 5 in the 5th to the Rockhounds. Fortunately, that was the only inning in which the Hooks allowed runs, and they ended up 8-5 winners. Everyone had a hit except for Jordan Kreke, who went 0-4. Kody Hinze and Chris Wallace drove in 2 each. Jose Martinez went 2-5 and was one of 4 guys with an RBI. Jake Buchanan's wheels fell off in the 5th as he couldn't get that last out. In 4 2/3 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, walked 1, and fanned 2. Erick Abreu got the win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless, allowing a hit and striking out 4. Can you believe he leads the Hooks in wins? Josh Zeid got a strikeout in a perfect 8th, and Jason Stoffel closed the door for his 9th save. Lancaster dropped their series opener with Inland Empire as they walked off 5-4 losers in 11 innings. The Jethawks suffer a critical loss which dealt a blow to their hopes in the first half divisional title race. Erik Castro had an RBI single, Ben Heath a 2-run double, and Jonathan Meyer had a sac fly. Unfortunately, Meyer also committed a huge error in the 11th with 2 outs that put Randal Grichuk (a Rosenberg native) at 2nd. Jose Trinidad was unable to recover as he walked Ricky Pacione and allowed 2 straight singles to Brennan Gowens (which loaded the bases) and Jean Almanzar (who ended it). Jorge De Leon had an OK start, as he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 1. Zach Grimmett allowed a run (inherited) on 1 hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Trinidad got the loss, but honestly, he pitched well outside of the 11th. In 3 1/3 innings, he allowed an unearned run (the winning run) on 3 hits and walked 3 without recording a strikeout. Lexington got a very nice start from Mike Foltynewicz, as he got even with Greensboro by beating them 6-2. Remember, he was rocked on Opening Night by the Grasshoppers. The Legends pounded out 15 hits, and everyone had at least 1 except for Justin Gominsky, who went 0-3. But, he did draw 2 walks. Matt Duffy went 3-4 with a sac fly in the 1st and then ripped a solo shot to left to lead off the 3rd. That's his 10th home run on the season. Delino DeShields went 2-5 with an RBI single in the 2nd and was caught stealing. And would you look at this, Mike Kvasnicka has clawed his way back to a .200 average by going 2-4 with an RBI double. Next in his sights.... the Mendoza Line. Jordan Scott, Drew Muren, and Zach Johnson had 2 hits apiece. Jimmy Howick went 1-5 with an RBI single. Foltynewicz got the win and is the first Sally League pitcher to win 8. In 7 innings, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Now, his strikeout rate is dropping a bit. However, I'm just nitpicking at this point. Murilo Gouvea threw 1 2/3 no-hit innings and fanned 3, but couldn't quite get that last out as he walked the bases loaded. No matter, Carlos Quevedo struck out Brent Keys to finish off the game. The Academy survived a harrowing 9th inning as the Royals very nearly forced extras. Luckily, Johan Arias had enough about himself to save a 7-6 victory. Luis Reynoso went 2-4 with a 2-run double. Randy Cesar went 2-4 with 2 runs scored, and he had an RBI groundout in the 1st that scored Reynoso, and then he led off the 4th with a solo home run, his first ever. Mesac Laguna also chipped in 2 hits of his own. Coming off a nice debut to open the DSL season, Edwin Villarroel went 7 innings and allowed 4 unearned runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Javier Saucedo made things a little interesting by allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in the 9th. Arias bailed him out and made sure Villarroel got the victory.
Telvin Nash is striking out an obscene amount, 101 k's in 207 AB's . 26 walks isn't a terrible number usually, but it's not nearly enough when you strike out that much. He has the most in all of minor league ball, across all levels. Only 1 other guy has more than 80, and Nash has 107. Can you really take numbers seriously, when it appears they are swinging for the fences every PA. Only 18 singles all year. His natural power still makes him a prospect, but he needs to refine his approach big time before this bad habit sets too strongly.
Spot on. Opposing pitchers are really exploiting that long swing of his. The Astros should get one of their roving coaches out to Lancaster for some one-on-one time. At this rate, he'll strike out 200 times by August.
Was looking at Nash's stats and it looks like he either strikes out or homers in almost 65% of this ABs. That is really amazing when you think about it.
Before I get to recapping Saturday's action, we've found out where some of the guys down in extended spring training will be heading to. Also, my Internet connection out in Florida is spotty at best, so don't be surprised if you see recaps posted an hour before the next day's games.

@b_culbreth , Wallace Gonzalez to stay in GCL to start the year.
— Clinton Riddle (@TheGrandOldGame) June 10, 2012
"@b_culbreth" is Brandon Culbreth, last year's 8th-round pick.

Josh Magee is returning to @GvilleAstros this season #Astros
— Brooks Parker (@Subber10) June 9, 2012
And also, an old friend makes his triumphant return.

Josh Magee is returning to @GvilleAstros this season #Astros
— Brooks Parker (@Subber10) June 9, 2012
Now, on to business. Saturday Stories Well, if you completely fail, at least do it in spectacular fashion. Dramatics in Corpus Christi!!!!! While we're on that subject, dramatics in Greensboro!!!!! Oh look, Telvin Nash actually had a multi-run home run. And R.J. Alaniz turned it around after getting smacked around in his last start. Recap After winning 14 straight at home, OKC has now lost 2 straight. In this one, with the Redhawks leading 7-6, Jose Valdez got 2 quick outs in the top of the 9th, and then everything completely disintegrated. He allowed 6 runs (all with 2 outs) to turn a potential win into a 12-7 loss that was pretty much guaranteed. Dallas Keuchel went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and fanned 7. Jimmy Paredes went 4-6 with 2 RBI singles, and he also whiffed to end the game. Brad Snyder went 2-4 with a 2-run double in the 1st to start off the scoring. Angel Sanchez was 3-5 with an RBI single, Mike Hessman had a sac fly, and J.B. Shuck was 2-3 with an RBI single. Jake Goebbert had a pinch-hit double in the 5th. Corpus walked off 6-5 winners against Midland after Jose Martinez dashed home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th. Drew Locke made his return to the Corpus Christi lineup and went 3-5 with a 2-run homer in the 5th inning. Big night for Jonathan Villar as he went 3-3 with an RBI single, drew a walk, scored twice, and stole 4 bases, tying a Hooks franchise record. Jose Martinez and Jonathan Singleton drove in 1 apiece. Jarred Cosart struggled in his 6 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits (solo and 2-run homer), walking 3 and striking out 6. Kevin Chapman walked and struck out 2 in a hitless 7th, and Arcenio Leon got the win in relief, allowing no hits in the 8th and 9th innings, walking 2 and striking out 3. Lancaster rebounded to take the middle game of their series with Inland Empire, winning 4-2. Chris Epps got it going with an RBI double in the 4th. Telvin Nash went deep for the 17th time, and surprise! It was a 2-run homer in the 6th. Enrique Hernandez went 2-5 with an RBI single in the 9th to extend the Jethawks lead to 4-0. Erik Castro and Jonathan Meyer had 2 hits apiece. R.J. Alaniz had a fantastic start, as he scattered 4 hits across 8 shutout innings. He walked 2 and struck out 4. Eh, the 4 strikeouts is a bit of a downer, but he did his job. Jason Chowning is still trying to acclimate himself to Lancaster, and he made things very interesting in the bottom of the 9th, as he allowed 2 runs while getting 2 outs. Kirk Clark bailed him out and finished it up by getting Brennan Gowens to fly out on his very first pitch. A fine time for Chan-Jong Moon to knock one out for the first time this season. His 3-run home run in the top of the 10th sent Lexington on their way to a 4-1 victory over Greensboro. The Legends found themselves on the wrong end of a perfect game from Jose Urena through the first 3 innings, and then Zach Johnson put an end to that in the 4th with a solo shot, his 9th of the season. Luis Ordosgoitti had a pretty good start. In 5 innings, he allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Evan Grills, after spending the first half of the season in Lexington as a reliever, was stretched out so he could most likely work as a starter in Tri-City. He got the win as he allowed 3 hits in 4 shutout innings, striking out 1. Dayan Diaz got his 5th save of the season. The Academy only had 4 hits and committed 4 errors, but they scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th to beat the Dodgers 4-2. Randy Cesar went 1-4 with an RBI, and Tomas De La Cruz had a pinch-hit 2-run single in the 7th. Juan Hernandez allowed a run on 3 hits in 4 innings, walking 3 and striking out 2. Rayderson Chevalier (probably the best name in the Astros system) got the win in relief after a nightmarish debut. He allowed an unearned run on 2 hits in 3 innings, walking 1 and striking out 1. Victor Mesa got his first save of the season. Game Scores Dallas Keuchel: 45 Jarred Cosart: 41 R.J. Alaniz: 76 Luis Ordosgoitti: 56 Juan Hernandez: 51 Three Stars 3. Jimmy Paredes, 2B, Oklahoma City 4-6, 2 RBI, 2 SB As we all know, Paredes is one of the top athletes in the system. With pretty much no place for him on the infield, I'd be inclined to give him some run as a center fielder. 2. Jonathan Villar, SS, Corpus Christi 3-3, RBI, 2 R, 4 SB Villar was put on notice after Carlos Correa was picked #1 overall, but he's looking to re-establish himself as the Astros' shortstop of the future. Games like these will certainly help. 1. R.J. Alaniz, P, Lancaster W, 8 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 76 Game Score After he got rocked in his last start, Alaniz just flat-out mowed down the 66ers. 4 strikeouts... meh, but I'm nitpicking at this point. Excellent start. Honorable Mentions Rayderson Chevalier, P, DSL Astros: For a young 17-year-old Dominican, he rebounded very nicely after his horrid debut. Chan-Jong Moon, SS, Lexington: Clutch. As an added bonus, his bat looks like it's really coming around. I hope he remains the everyday shortsop for the Legends. Zach Johnson, 1B, Lexington: Shutout and perfect game buster. Drew Locke, CF, Corpus Christi: Welcome back. Goat Well, at least Jose Valdez failed in spectacular fashion. I can't be too mad; he's been lights-out for OKC this year. Looking Ahead OKC and New Orleans will conclude their series at 6:05. Brian Bass will get the start for the Redhawks. He'll be opposed by Wade LeBlanc. Corpus Christi will welcome San Antonio to Whataburger Field for a 4-game series beginning tonight at 6:05. Ross Seaton will take the mound, and will be opposed by Josh Geer. Lancaster and Inland Empire will wrap things up at 1:05 Pacific. David Martinez takes the hill for the Jethawks; his counterpart will be Manny Correa. Lexington finishes up its roadtrip by looking for a sweep of Greensboro. They will play at 4 Eastern, with Luis Cruz starting for the Legends. Adam Conley will go for Greensboro. The DSLstros and Dodgers are in progress.
You touched on it in your post, but what are the Astros gonna do with our 2B prospects. With it looking more and more like Altuve is legit. With Wallace and CJ playing well even 3B is a little clogged. With his speed a run at center seems necessary at this point. DD is still a couple of years away and we could always move him back to center later, but Paredes is ready now, he is destroying the ball. And what is up with this Matt Duffy character, will he get promoted soon, because he's killing now. Over his last 40 games, a .940 OPS. And he looks like Lance Berkmans little brother. Lastly is George Springer nicked up, he's been out the last couple of games and when is Mier due back.
A lack of walks has hurt Paredes. I know Luhnow has mentioned it as something that is holding him back. Otherwise they'd have to find a place for him on this roster. With the DH position coming next year, Paredes could fit in there. Wallace will be back at 1B when Lee is traded (hopefully, though his injury has made that less likely).
As the year goes on, a trade should be easier. They have to pay Lee anyway, so they can eat the vast majority of his salary and take back a low level prospect in return. They need to see if Wallace can hit over a prolonged period (i.e. the rest of the year) rather than a few weeks. Another option (if they want to play Lee) is to give him some outfield starts.
Sunday Stories Lexington loses in style. On the bright side, a Legend is trying desperately to rescue his prospect status. Dramatics in Inland Empire!!! Corpus came out guns blazing, but could they hold on? Crash Hessman with yet another multi-homer game. Recap Abridged edition. OKC took down New Orleans 12-9 behind the bat of Mike Hessman, who went 3-4 with 2 2-run homers (17). Scott Moore went 2-5 with a 3-run homer (8) in the 2nd. Angel Sanchez went 3-4 with 2 RBI, and Landon Powell and Brad Snyder drove in 1 each. Brian Bass went 4 1/3 and allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Mickey Storey got the win in relief, throwing 1 2/3, allowing a solo homer and striking out 3. Corpus Christi blitzed San Antonio, jumping out to a 11-0 lead after the 4th inning. The wheels showed signs of loosening, but they still won rather comfortably, 11-6. Jonathan Villar hit his 4th homer of the season, a solo shot to lead off the 1st. Adam Bailey doubled twice and drove in 2. Drew Locke also drove in 2. Brandon Wikoff (2-3) and Jose Martinez (3-5) drove in 1 and scored 2 runs apiece. Kody Hinze went 2-5 and also drove in a run. Ross Seaton was cruising until his wheels fell off in the 5th. In 5 innings, he allowed 5 runs (all in the 5th) on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and fanned 5. Crazy day in San Bernadino as Lancaster scored 2 in the top of the 9th to tie the game at 7. Unfortunately, they walked off with an 8-7 loss after Kirk Clark allowed the winning hit to Taylor Lindsey. Telvin Nash went deep (18) with a 2-run homer with 1 out in the 9th to tie game. Chris Epps tripled and scored twice. Ben Orloff went 3-4, and Domingo Santana and Rafael Valenzuela drove in 1 each. In his first game since being activated from the DL, Santana went 2-5 with an RBI triple in the 1st for the 1st run of the game. David Martinez allowed 7 runs on 10 hits (2-run homer) in 6+ innings, striking out 3. Pat Urckfitz threw 2 scoreless, walking 1 and striking out 1. Whew. Lexington had to settle for 2 out of 3 after getting walloped 13-4 by Greensboro. The lone offense was provided by Mike Kvasnicka, who went 2-4 with 2 2-run homers (8). He hit one from each side of the plate. Matt Duffy went 3-3 with a walk and scored on both Kvasnicka homers. Luis Cruz was knocked around in his 4 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits (solo homer) and walked 1 without recording a strikeout. Nathan Pettus was torched in the 5th, allowing 5 runs. Blake Ford made his season debut and let 3 more score in the 6th. Euris Quezada came out unscathed, as he threw 2 scoreless. Three Stars Decide for yourselves. Goat Ditto. Looking Ahead OKC and New Orleans will play another series; this one will be on the road. Armando Galarraga will make his OKC debut after a tune-up with Lexington. He'll go up against Tom Koehler at 7. Corpus and San Antonio are back at it, as Jose Cisnero and Tom Layne will square off at 7:05. Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga start off a 3-game series at 7:05 Pacific. TBD (who I think is Bobby Doran) will start against Garrett Gould. Lexington comes back home to start a series with West Virginia at 7:05 Eastern. TBD will take the mound for the Legends; he'll be opposed by Zack Von Rosenberg. DSLstros and Dodgers in progress.
Do you really want a player as athletic as Paredes at DH? Evan if he has bad instincts, his great speed should make him an above average corner outfielder at the least. As for Brett Wallace, I know this is a good problem to have, but what if he has figured it out as a hitter. The ascension of Singleton is gonna happen sometime next year. Seems to me keeping him at third not only increases his position relative value, but gives him a place to play. He's a sub-par fielder, but we don't exactly have Brooks Robinson at third now.
No, but I'd imagine DH as being revolving. Go to the Joe Maddon/Tony Larussa school of playing players at multiple positions and revolving lineups. I'd also rather have Altuve at DH, and Paredes in the field if given the choice.
Yeah I actually thought the same thing with Altuve. If he continues to develop his power stroke he'd be an ideal DH cuz the dude can flat out hit. I think Paredes is better suited in the field and not because Altuve is bad defensively because he's not but I think its the one area where his size kinda hurts him. He's quick but his length prevents getting to a few balls where you have a guy who's long, athletic and fast in Paredes.
Also, the fact that Paredes can play 3b should have made him a call up instead of Downs. I know Mills likes having Downs for outfield help but come on now.

Monday Stories Dramatics in New Orleans? Yes please. Jose Cisnero on the rebound? Welcome back, George Springer. Lexington continuing their great form as of late. Recap Well, OKC walked off with a 4-3 loss in their series opener with New Orleans. Angel Sanchez hit his 4http://www.milb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_447816.jpgth homer of the season, a solo shot in the 5th. Brandon Barnes went 1-3 with a sac fly and an RBI single, and Carlos Corporan went 2-3 and scored twice. Armando Galarraga threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 1. Adalberto Flores allowed 2 in the 6th, and Jose Valdez was victimized again in the 9th, as he was able to get 2 outs, but couldn't close the deal. Corpus won their 5th straight as they took down San Antonio 5-1. Adam Bailey had an RBI groundout and a sac fly. Jose Martinez had the big hit, a 3-run homer (6) in the 6th that gave the Hooks a 4-1 lead. Jonathan Singleton and Jair Fernandez had 2 hits apiece. Jose Cisnero allowed a run on 6 hits and struck out 6 in 7 innings of work. Josh Zeid had a strikeout in a 1-2-3 8th, and Jason Stoffel allowed a triple with 1 out in the 9th, but nothing came of it. Lancaster missed a golden opportunity as they walked off 5-4 losers to Rancho Cucamonga. Had they won, they would have forced a 4-way tie for 1st in the California League's South Division, with 5 games left in the 1st half. After missing 3 games, George Springer announced his return to the lineup with by launching his 12th homer of the season in the 1st to give the Jethawks a 1-0 lead. The Jethawks scored 3 in the 8th to take a 4-2 lead, but Jason Chowning allowed 3 in the bottom half for the loss. Domingo Santana had a 2-run single in the 8th, and Rene Garcia also had an RBI single in the 8th. Bobby Doran threw 6 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Lexington defeated West Virginia 6-4 in their series opener and in the process, moved into a tie for 3rd with Savannah. Matt Duffy, Mike Kvasnicka, and Drew Muren drove in 2 each. Duffy and Muren had 1 hit each, and Kvasnicka went 3-4 with a double and a 2-run homer (8) off Zack Von Rosenberg in the 3rd. He's now gotten his average up to the Mendoza Line after that incredibly appalling start to the season. Delino DeShields went 2-4. Jonas Dufek allowed 4 runs on 8 hits and fanned 6 in 7 innings. Murilo Gouvea had a 1-2-3 8th, striking out 1, and Dayan Diaz earned his 6th save of the season, walking 1 and striking out 2. The Academy was whacked by the Dodgers 12-1. Arturo Michelena tripled in the 5th and scored on Cristian Murillo's groundout. Harold Arauz only got 1 out and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits. The bullpen was torched, and I'll leave it at that. Game Scores Armando Galarraga: 57 Jose Cisnero: 67 Bobby Doran: 56 Jonas Dufek: 51 Three Stars 3. Angel Sanchez, SS, Oklahoma City 1-3, HR (4) Can you believe that he's hitting .296? 2. Mike Kvasnicka, C/RF, Lexington 3-4, 2B, 2-R HR (8) Slowly but surely, he's clawing his way back to fringe prospect status. Yep, he had that wretched start to the season. Oddly enough, I feel that the one thing he's done right this season is that he is flashing the power that everyone had hoped for. He had a total of 9 in 196 games entering the 2012 season. This year, he has 8 homers in 46. Also, he's proven to be a serviceable defender behind the plate. 1. Jose Cisnero, P, Corpus Christi W, 7 IP, 6 H, ER, 6 K, 67 Game Score After a pretty bad May, Cisnero closed it out with 2 good starts, and he's continuing his run into his first 2 starts of June. In those 4 starts, he has a 28:2 K:BB ratio. Honorable Mentions Brandon Barnes, CF, Oklahoma City: It's nice to see him continue his roll after his promotion. Jonathan Singleton, 1B/LF, Corpus Christi: The numbers show that he's a much better player when he's in the lineup at first. Jose Martinez, 2B, Corpus Christi: A big homer sent the Hooks on their way. Matt Duffy, 3B, and Drew Muren, RF, Lexington: Meyer may be a level ahead and a better defender, but Duffy has passed him up as the top 3B prospect. He'd more than hold his own in Corpus. Muren's done well. I'd switch him and Jordan Scott, who's been struggling, in the order in Lexington. Goat Dayan Diaz and Jason Stoffel finished their games out, but Jose Valdez and Jason Chowning couldn't get it done. Dishonorable mentions go to Telvin Nash and Brandon Meredith for suffering hat tricks. Looking Ahead OKC and New Orleans continue their home-and-home series with the middle game of the road leg at 7:05. Looks like it's Paul Clemens and J.D. Martin again??? Brett Oberholtzer will get the start for Corpus as they play the middle game of their series against San Antonio at 7:05. He'll be opposed by Keyvius Sampson. Lancaster will try not to walk off losers in the middle game of their series with Rancho Cucamonga at 7:05 Pacific. Tyson Perez will go up against Zach Lee. Lexington and WV are back at it at 7:05 Eastern. Nick Tropeano will get the start for the Legends.
I've noticed Cisnero's last 4 starts. His control has done a 180; pitch counts are down and he is getting past the 5th. If he can keep this up, he's going to start getting some attention.
Yep. He's still only 23, and he's got an ERA of 2.16 to go along with that sparkling 28:2 K:BB ratio in 25 innings. A nice WHIP of 0.92. Anytime you put that K rate together with that sort of WHIP, it's nice. If he can really keep this up, that could be something interesting for the rotation. Seems like his trajectory could at least have him slot in as a late inning setup man type of reliever. Kvasnicka is heating up. OPS of over 1.100 in his last 10 games. 4 multi hit games in his last 6. A switch hitting utility player that could play C, 3B, and RF with power could be interesting.
