So players still on their rookie deals playing starter minutes, or steady veterans on veteran minimum contracts playing heavy minutes have more production per dollar compared to big money players like Miami's "Big 3".

I'm gonna get a rep as a Parsons hater - but the idea he is in the 30s with regards to overall player ranking is a joke. Come on...get real.
That being said, he is outplaying the hell out of his rookie contract. No doubt about that.

Problem with PER is it doesn't factor in defense. So it overrates Harden while underrating Asik, Lin, and possibly Parsons.

The most underpaid player in the league is Lebron. He'd get 70 million/year easy on an open market.

I'm glad you said this first. This analysis is flawed in many ways. The ordinal value of these ranks have no actual statistical significance and so taking a simple process a subtracting one end of the list from the other makes even less sense.

Some other user suggested using PER instead of CBS ranks. That doesn't make sense either. When it comes to answering the question, "Who is the most underpaid relative to production," you want to use counting stats instead of rate stats. It doesn't matter if you have a PER of 100 if you only played in 1 game.

I don't have time to perform this analysis now, but if anyone wants, I would use Win Share (a counting and a summary stat) from B-Ref, find out the cost per Win, and figure out the player contributions by multiplying Win Share * Cost Per Win. From there you can see surplus value or deficit value by subtracting their salary this season.

as many have pointed out this is pretty flawed, especially when you look at the max guys, but id say the top 25 he got is a pretty good indicator of great value players in the league. So good job

You should work on your reading skills. It's a ranking based on production/salary. Considering he's making what equates to low first rounder money but is giving you stats all across the board it's not hard to see why he would rank so high.

Begs the question, what will happen in the next 2 - 3 years. Won't Chandler, Omer, and Lin's contract's end? How would we keep them(Assuming all 3 of them played well and improved)? I guess we might never know until the time comes.

There's a great article somewhere about how it's way better for Lebron to get "underpaid" in the NBA because that makes for a more exciting and competitive league, which makes him much more valuable as an endorsement figure (which is where the REAL superstar money's made).

Lin will probably stay an 8m per player, Omer might be worth 10, and Parsons if he wants to stay, would know that his cap hold is so low, it's not worth him signing until after everything else is done and he can be bird rights'd over the cap to what he's worth

Damn, I can't stop shaking my head and have to speak up. All this bashing, and now giving him one star? If some of you would read the entire post, most of this could be avoided. He said this was just something fun to do and that there are flaws. I guess this is what someone gets on here for going out of their way to do something?

Umm, he said Lebron has the best contract in the NBA in the OP. He also said that part of the reason he used the CBS rankings is because they actually include defense. Man, you need to learn to read/think before you speak/type.

Ok, you go do that, we'll all be waiting. OP said that this is just something that's fun to look at, and isn't anything made to be used for the final say.

Wow, thanks for stating the obvious! Did you read the original post? He said there were flaws. Damn, now I'm starting to remember why I was a lurker for so long. Everyone here just wants to show everyone else up, even if it means ignoring things other people have said.

    See my last statement.

Umm....what are you talking about? This is based off of offensive and defensive stats (as was stated in the original post), as well as the price of the contract. Where did anyone say it was based off of "points scores"?

In the end, he probably wasted his time, but at least it gives a general idea.

How under compensated is Chandler Parsons really?

With all of the discussion about Chandler being under compensated I wanted to compare him to his peers and see just exactly how under compensated he is. Here is a list of relevant Small Forwards in the game today and what they make along with their stats, age, experience etc… as of 2/4/13.

    Code:
Rank	Player Age	Pay	Exp	PPG	RPG	APG	BPG	SPG	3PG	FG%	3PT%	PRABS
    1	LeBron James	28	17.54	9	26.6	8.3	7	0.8	1.7	3.2	0.549	0.404	44.4
    2	Kevin Durant	24	16.66	5	29.6	7.4	4.4	1.2	1.6	4.6	0.516	0.414	44.2
    3	Carmelo Anthony	28	19.40	9	28.5	6.2	2.8	0.5	0.9	6.6	0.447	0.409	38.9

    15	Tayshaun Prince	32	6.76	10	11.8	4.6	2.5	0.3	0.5	1.2	0.448	0.434	19.7
    16	Matt Barnes	32	0.85	9	10.6	4.9	1.5	0.9	1.1	3.9	0.471	0.344	19

    19	Harrison Barnes	20	2.79	0	9.2	4.4	1.5	0.2	0.7	2	0.443	0.359	16

The first thing that jumps out is that the only player that makes less than Chandler Parsons on that list is Matt Barnes and he is also the only player on that list that is not a starter. Paul George is the 2nd lowest paid starter on the list at 2.57 million and 1.6 million more than the lowest player on the list Chandler Parsons at .88 million. The average salary of the Small Forwards on that list is 9.25 million or 8.37 million more than Chandler’s salary.

But of course all players don’t perform the same so I filtered on Parsons stats or greater of 14.4 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 3.6 APG, .470 FG% and .362 3PT% and only came up with 3 players from that list that met those minimums; Kevin Durant, Lebron James and Chandler Parsons. Durant and James average about 17 million this season while Chandler is at .88 million. Of course Chandler does not come close to their stats so this comparison is pointless.

On that list Chandler Parsons is:
    Scoring - 12th
    Rebounding – 12th
    Assists - 7th
    Blocks – 14th
    Steals - 11th
    Field Goal Percentage 6th
    3PT Field Goal Percentage – 9th

How good is Chandler at putting the ball in the basket when he has the opportunity? Well he is 6th in FG% so that is where he fits on that list right? We all know all shots are not created equal so comparing Chandler’s .470 percentage to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist .470 is not exactly apples to apples since MKG shoots almost all of his shots close to the basket while Chandler takes almost 5 shots a game from beyond the arc. If you look at all the players that take at least 4 three point shots a game and have at least a .470 field goal percentage the list only includes Kevin Durant and Chandler Parsons. Of course Chandler is not the focus of defenses like Melo or LeBron are and he seldom takes shots out of isolation plays. Still, that shows that Chandler is a decent offensive scoring option (I think he would be a terrific 3rd or 4th option).

In an attempt at ranking the Small Forwards on the list as fairly as possible while using the stats at hand I added PPG, RGP, APG, SPG and BPG to get a total score. Although this does not do a good job of factoring defensive play, after looking at the list I think it is likely pretty accurate. Scores came out in a range from 16 to 44.4.

Tier One 40.1 to 45 – Lebron James and Kevin Durant are clearly the two best players in the league as well as the two best Small Forwards in the game today. There is absolutely no surprise here. The average pay in this group is 17.1 million a season.

Tier Two35.1 to 40 – Carmelo Anthony is the only player in this group. While I don’t think anyone outside of New York would argue that Melo is not in the same category as Lebron or KD, he is clearly a top 5 player in the league right now and a legit MVP candidate. Carmelo’s salary is 19.4 million

Tier Three30.1 to 35 – There are only two players in this group and that’s Paul George and Paul Pierce. George is the one guy that might create some controversy being this high up on the list but he fills up the stat sheet. His averages round out to 17 PPG, 8 RPG, 4 APG 1 BPG and 2 SPG and the kid is only 22. Pierce has a salary of 16.79 million while George has a salary of 2.57 million, of course George is still on his rookie scale contract.

Tier Four25.1 to 30 – This is the largest list of players and includes Nicolas Batum, Luol Deng, Danny Granger, Thaddeus Young, Evan Turner, Danillo Gallinari and bringing up the rear of this group is Chandler Parsons. All of these guys put up similar stats although Chandler comes in at the bottom of this group. I think if you have watched the games then I think you would agree that Chandler has either played equal to or better than these guys when matched up against them on most occasions. Batum went off for about 30 in one game early in the season, while against Gallinari a few days ago he was playing even or even a little better until the late 3rd early 4th when Gallo went off. Danny Granger’s stats are based on last season since he has not played this season. Chandler is the only player in this group with less than 2 years experience. The average salary in this group is 9.69 million with a range 5.29 mil to 16.46 mil (not including Chandler). Parsons and Turner as the only players still on their rookie scale contracts; Turner makes 5.29 million while Parsons makes .88 million.

Tier Five 20.1 to 25 – Only Ron Artest aka Metta World Piece is in this group and he makes 7.25 million.

Tier Six 15.1 to 20 – The remainder on the list fall into this category and include Tayshaun Prince, Matt Barnes, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Al-Farouq Aminu and Harrison Barnes. Although Prince is statistically in this category I think he is actually a tier four player because when I watch him play he just seems steady and makes few mistakes. Prince has always seemed like a Greg Poppavich type of player to me. Matt Barnes is the only non starter on the list and not surprisingly falls into this group. The average salary of this group is 3.59 million and has the only player (Matt Barnes) on the list that makes less than Chandler Parsons

Chandler is a complete player on the offensive end as well as a plus defender. Some people claim that Chandler Parsons is just a bench player in a starter’s role but if that’s a fact then so are most of the other starting Small Forwards in the game today. Chandler is not a great isolation player but he is a great team player. He only has 1 year experience so it’s a given that he will improve over the next couple of years. I could see Chandler moving closer to the top of the Tier Four group of even moving into the Tier Three group. Just looking at the other Small Forwards in his group, Chandler is a 10 million dollar a year player making .88 million a year because he was a 2nd round pick and because he is still on his rookie contract. That means Chandler is roughly being underpaid by almost 9 million a year based on the average pay of his pier group.

Other players that are obviously under paid based on their pier group are Evan Turner and Paul George. Both players like Chandler are under paid because they are still playing under their rookie contracts. In fact, while Paul George is making 2.57 million a year, he is probably the most under paid player on the list based on the pay of the only other player in his pier group.
