congrats to vernon on still being relevant to teams that are contenders. OPS around .670 for 2 straight years after we thought that 2009 season was the "bad" one...at least he broke .700 that year. 2007 was terrible too. This guy might have been one of the worst values for a contract in history (non-injury related).
A team finally nutted up and signed Kyle Lohse.

Lohse to sign with brewers
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) March 25, 2013

3 years, $33 mil AND the 17th overall pick (pretty much the worst one you can lose for a Type A) for a 34 year old coming off a career year. Yes, he had a very good year the one before that... but he also had 10 average to below-average years before that. Especially can't believe the 3rd year after his comp (Dempster) only got 2, albeit for 2M more per.
Cardinals lock up Wainright

Sources: Wainwright, #STLCards in agreement on five-year, $97.5M extension that will run from 2014 to '18.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) March 27, 2013

The Jays extended Happ through 2014. He'll get $3.7m this year and $5.2m next year. Kinda puzzling for a guy who they weren't sure was going to make the rotation.
Johan Santana likely out for the season again http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto...santana-probable-tear-shoulder-surgery-likely
Justin Verlander has just become the highest-paid pitcher in history. His new contract extension runs through 2019, and a $22 million vesting option in 2020 could push the total amount to over $200 million.

Sources: Justin Verlander can make $202m under terms of his new deal. so much dumb money being thrown around right now. Unbelievable (not referencing Verlander or Wainwright)
Buster Posey will also be receiving a very, very long extension paying him a very, very large amout of money.

Posey gets nine years, $167 million, starting in 2013.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) March 29, 2013

Buster’s deal includes a team option for 2022. One last thing here... Elvis Andrus, Rangers agree on 8 year, $120 million extension The Rangers and Elvis Andrus have a deal on a $120 million, eight-year extension that will bring Andrus' commitment to $131 million over 10 years. The sides hammered out the agreement during the past couple days. Andrus' total guarantee will be precisely $131.275 million over 10 years, including the $11.275 million he had left on his three-year deal through 2014. He would have been a free agent after '14. The deal is expected to be announced sometime this week. The extension might include an opt-out clause, MLB.com reported.
Probably. Seems like the Rangers are going the small market route. Keep the assets that are financially reasonable/future proof (Andrus is a 24 y/o, 2x all-star SS). Let the ones that will ruin the salary cap go (Hamilton). Adjust and tweak playing style to stay relevant/competitive. It'll be interesting to see if the small market method works for the big market teams. The Yankees spend-spend-spend MLB method clearly ain't working. Having two all-star caliber short-stops at $16m/year is hardly an unenviable position.
Where does Kinsler move? He's locked into $16M per as well. Andrus has a career OPS of .694. Tremendous defensive player though.
They'll have to make a move, no doubt. But Kinsler is still performing well enough that a team like the Yankees would trade for him. Keep in mind this is Andrus's age 24 season. A hitter's prime is 27-31. They're paying for the expected jump in numbers.
They're trying to move Kinsler to 1B. He was resistant all spring, including insinuating in the press that his teammates supported him right where he was at 2B. What happened to Mike Olt? He was their stud 3B/1B prospect last season....I didn't hear his name called during the pre-game ceremony yesterday where they introduced everyone associated with the teams, including massage therapists. EDIT: ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION -- http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/1757980/mike-olt Mike Olt to concentrate on 3B in minors by Ed Gauna | Fantasy Writer Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told MLB.com on Tuesday that prospect Mike Olt will concentrate on playing third base at Triple-A Round Rock. Olt batted just .194 with two homers and five RBI in 19 Cactus League games before being optioned last week. The 24-year-old played a couple of different positions while in camp with Texas.
